Hey guys, say you do a double degree, take mine as an example, Commerce and Science.
Assuming each semester you're just doing 4 subjects and not overloading, can you basically finish off each degree 'separately'? What i mean is, say I pick no science subjects since I started uni, I pick 4 commerce subjects per semester and eventually I'll finish off my Commerce degree in the same time as someone who's doing straight Commerce, then I do only science subjects to finish off my Science degree. Or is there some rule at monash where you have to do at least 1 of each unit from each degree per semester?
I dunno, my friend wants to do this and she's not really sure on the policies and neither am I, any help would be good :)

I'd also like to know this too for Commerce/Economics. I wanna finish off my commerce (accounting major) units by the 3rd year before I finish my economics units

Try checking the course handbook on the uni website. There might be restrictions as to what units you can do at specific yrs.

I went through this phase of misunderstanding as well. I had to discuss the issue with the Director of my scholarship for BBIS.
She first stated that she was unaware of such a rule, though, to verify that you could do 4 units of the same degree, I tried enrolling 4 BComm units for next semester. No error on WES showed up.
Which means that no one would really "know" that your doing 4 units of the same degree. And I doubt anyone would be bothered chasing you up on the matter.
You would only do 4 units of the same course if you had unit clashes/units being unavailable in a particular semester or were going on internship for a semester. I don't really see any other reason/benefit of just doing 4 units of the same course anyway.
Even if there was such a rule (which I highly doubt), you could get your managing Faculty of your double degree to waive the restriction.

I'm doing 4 Eng next semester in a Comm/Eng degree and I haven't received any news of this getting rejected as of yet

There are no requirements, and you are definitely allowed.
However, since 2 degrees are condensed into 1, you need to carefully plan your units so all the prerequisites are done at the right time. I know for a fact that it is impossible to complete the engineering degree within 3 years due to prerequisites. It may be the same thing for other disciplines as well.
You can also opt to graduate after completing part of your double degree.

Lets take engineering/science for example. For my degree, I do 4 2nd year engineering and 8 3rd year engineering subjects. So lets say I did all my science subjects first, then did all my engineering subjects. I'd come across an issue when trying to do a 3rd year subject at the same time as a 2nd year subject because all of my 3rd year subjects have the 2nd year subjects as prereqs. Hence I'd only be able to do 4 units in one year, then do all my 3rd year units the year after, hence I am effectively spending one extra semester at uni simply because I didn't plan out my course properly.
The best way to avoid this is to plan your course now, with an idea of what subjects you'll do and when. I myself am thinking of doing 3 eng and 1 maths next year in semester 1 but to do this I'm limited in what I can pick for that semester because other subjects have prereqs/coreqs that need to be satisfied first

sorry to bring this up again...but I'm doing Bachelor of Science(Maths/Physics) and Engineering(Chemical), in first year atm. But say I do the generic course for first and second year, but then in third year i decided to do all science units. Does this mean that since i will have completed all the science requirements for the degree, i can opt to graduate with my Bachelor of Science? and then drop the engineering part? or will i have to go back and do the SCI2010 and other random parts of the BSc?
Similarly, could I 'neglect' my science units until the fifth year, which will mean that I've completed all the Engineering requirements for the degree after 4th year, and then graduate with a Bachelor of Engineering? Or would this also mean I'd have to go back and do the rest of the common first year units from engineering and other parts of the straight BE degree?
Sorry if this is silly...but it seems like an interesting loophole if I could effectively complete a BSc in three years, with the option of doing engineering in another 2(although it would probably be better to do Masters in Engineering?), or do engineering in 4 years and then have the option of doing BSc in one more year. Although then you've got the option to go into PhD and other stuff too...

Yes, you can opt to graduate with a single degree (that's what I'm doing. I was in the double degree, but now I am only completing the science component).
There is a downfall, if you choose to do that, your other degree will suffer. This is as TT has put, if you don't plan the units properly, you might run into trouble where you are doing prerequisites too late, and end up extending your course by an extra semester/year (this is my dilemma if I decide I want to finish engineering).
