Title: fail a subject?
Post by: murano on June 09, 2011, 12:47:40 pm
I'm doing science and I was planning on doing a masters in engineering when I finish my course. However, I've really struggled to get motivated this semester and I'm pretty sure I've failed calculus. What happens if I fail a subject? I know I have to repeat it but how do I make up the points that I've lost and how does it affect me getting into my masters? I'm doing first year.

Also, If I don't get the 65 average in my 2nd and 3rd years, what options do I have in doing engineering?

hey dude. if you want to finish in the three years, you'll most likely have to take a summer, or you can overload during a normal semester (not recommended).

failing calc doesnt impact upon your chances of getting into the m.e - yayy!! as you said only second and third years count. whether they have to be second and third level subjects i'm still not sure, you may want to check.

65 should be doable!! but if you don't reach that, i think your options are research?? sorry, i dont really know the outcomes of b.sci, as i did a b.comm before my m.e.

Thanks for that. I still have a chance at passing, my mark will be between 45-55, but I was still worried about it. Kind of glad that I did so badly so early, it really is the wake up call that I needed. I had no motivation to study or do any work at all during the semester, thinking I'd just wing it. Won't happen again!

So if I don't take a summer, I'll have to do an extra semester? (there's no chance I'm overloading). If so, will I have to wait till 5th year to start the m.e or will I be able to start it in second semester 4th year, assuming I get the 65 of course?

Dw, i completely understand where you're coming from. Going from 10 hours a week of contact with a teacher for maths to one hour a week at uni is quite a shock. coupled with the relaxed uni culture...i think its normal to fail a few subjects on the way.

you could gain entry mid-year, but because of the relatively small class sizes, depending on what specialization you choose, you may only be able to start in your fifth year because a lot of subjects are only offered in one sem. you'll really have to check your course plan and line it up against the handbook.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I'll probably have to try and do a summer subject, otherwise I can probably just space out my subjects over the 3rd and 4th year which I guess would make things a lot easier.

Yeah, I would probably do a summer subject if I were you. It's only six weeks, and you save a year. And if you do a breadth or some easy subject, you'll still have a social life during summer. Good luck!!

what happens if you fail nearly all your subjects from yoru core? say a BSc degree and fail all 3 core subjects? what would happen?

I'm pretty sure in those cases they'll give you a warning. Though if you fail three out of four subjects, you should be considering whether you're doing the right course, of if uni is for you.

Yeah this.  If you're in first year at the moment, the chances of getting your enrolment terminated is highly unlikely but you'll definitely be forced to book an appointment with a student advisor to discuss your options and/or confront an Academic Progress Committee.

If you're in second or third year for example, then if you fail 50% or more of your course load (so more than 2 subjects for a full time student), then you'll be in trouble.  You'll be battling against the Academic Progress Committee and quite possibly fighting to stay in your degree.

So to be concise, you don't want to be in that situation.

Cos I had an exam on that day.  Went to sleep at 10 PM and got up at 2 AM.  Got home that night at 7:30 after being at uni all day.  So needed some sleep but also needed a bit more time to study.

umm.. im pretty sure i just failed a maths subject.
So if i do a make up one this summer:
will i have to pay this out of pocket(CAP? (can it still be in hecs)?
do i have to do an equivalent to the subject or can i do something completely different?
how badly will this affect gpa/ future employment prospects?

haha...no sweat guys, it's still CSP.

CAP is only for certain students....pretty sure it's only for students who need to take more than 24 subjects in order to get into a engineering masters. i.e - commerce students.
