Is this a good or bad idea? Honestly, i've done all nighters every year, and not once has it affected me the next day.
So has anyone ever tried it for a VCE exam? If so, how did you go, and did it help you? :D
-
I study extremely well at night, so I usually work till 3am or so on Friday/Saturday nights (Friday only if it's urgent :P)
But I wouldn't be doing this the night before an exam, sleep is important
However, for the past three nights, I've been doing it (as we have no school, Friday was a study day)
Not tonight though.

I also study much better at night but am going to bed RIGHT NOW! good night and good luck

I've been tossing this idea around also but I'm gonna go to sleep and when I wake up just go over the my mistakes in the exams I've done as well as my notes. Lack of sleep will mess with your mind and you will probably loss more marks than you would possible gain. Although there is always coffee if you choose to pull an all nighter.
-
A little off topic, but couldn't be bothered making another thread for it.
I know the night before a good sleep is ideal, but two nights before?
I've been experimenting with just slamming an all nighter (till about 4am), then waking at 8am then studying on till about 10pm at which point you actually get to sleep. I find that otherwise the night before an exam you just can't get to bed at the time that you want to.
I personally think all nighters are awesome.
-
I find myself working better at late into the night than I do during the day. If you can handle it I don't see a problem with it. However, I wouldn't exactly recommend it.
-
All nighter the night before the exam is generally a very bad idea. You think you're alert but you're really not.
A chemical in your brain called adenosine builds up hour by hour for every hour you are awake. It slows down messages and makes you feel tired. I don't think an all nighter is a very good idea at all unless you really really need to...
That said if you want to do it any other day except the night before the exam then i don't see why not if thats how you learn..?
-
I slept relatively early last night. Feeling pumped and ready to go :)
-
How did everyone sleep lol?
-
Slept well though i didn't sleep right at 10 haha took me a while to doze off now i have nothing to do until about 10 something when i'll make my way to school -.-

I love the idea of staying up late then waking up early to force you to sleep early the next night. Works well. Have no idea how you can be productive until 4am though... Seriously, I start zoning out around 1am, and it's not like I don't study well at night.
-
So hard to sleep, so pumped at night! I reckon I was awake until 12:30, even though I went to bed a bit after 10:30! :(
-
That's not too bad.. I got about 5 hours sleep on average for my exams.
All the best everyone :)
-
Alright! Good Luck every1 and may the "forces" be with you!!
P.s. Dont stress!!!
-
I slept at 4am I think and woke up at 9! Didn't want to get out of bed :(
-
i did the vcaa 2010 exam this morning...
not sure if it was a good idea :P

Probably not :P but I'm starting to wonder how they're going to put 23 questions over 42 marks... 2010 had 20 questions over 40 marks and evidently the motion questions weren't very hard...

are anyone drinking energy drinks??? i feel drowsy i wanna drink one

When you can't sleep the night before an exam - FAP.

Apparently, some studies say that if you compare two people that have different amounts of sleep one night(say one person has 2 hours, the other has the full 8 hours needed) then the same amount the next night(both sleep for 8 hours) there is no difference in alertness etc. So it's basically saying that you don't need to 'catch up' on lost sleep, as long as you sleep well the night before something important, you should be fresh and ready to go.
I don't know how reliable this info is(I don't have a source, just heard it off a friend), and personally I wouldn't be willing to risk trying it before an exam, but if you've done it already Taiga, then I guess there must be some truth to it, and maybe it only works over two nights...I'd be very wary about sleeping two hours/night for 5 days then having eight and assuming you'll be fine...
-
It wouldn't be a good idea if you had two exams in two days haha.
-
I do all nighters. They definetly are good if you're behind on homework but not to study. Do your studying earlier on and homework and questions later at night. This can help becauser of the repetition especially with math question when your grinding your way through and exercise.

I think you're correct in terms of awareness.
I was referring more to maximizing your hours of uptime before an exam by getting little sleep 2 days before, additionally I usually never get to sleep before 2AM, so if I deprive myself one night, the next night i generally always feel better on the next night. Perhaps just a psychological thing.
Going to move this back to Gen VCE, not sure why it's here :D

Undertaking an 'All-nighter' would be kind of risky, depending on the current state your in. If your all tired and weary, then it wouldn't be recommended. But if your awake, and ready to learn something new, then that would be the best possibility. And also remember to take breaks every half an hour or so. (:

if you have put in the work through out the year i am puzzled as to why you would even need to pull an all nighter the night before the exam not to mention the effect it would have on you, although you might feel 'fine' the next morning in really your brain wont be at 100%. you should make sure you get 7-8 hours even 9 hours (if your young) every night. if your behind in work go to bed even earlier an finish it in the morning.

All nighters aren't really that good for your health. It's fine to stay up all night once every so often, but if you do it regularly, you really do run the risk of reduced immunity to illness, irritation, fatigue, depression, etc. and this is a problem that lots of people who regularly work night shifts deal with.

You mean those who do not sleep throughout the day and work at night?
-
Yes, sunlight is important and if you work nights you get less of it :(

I disagree... you do need to catch up on lost sleep.
It's called sleep debt.
But, as I understand it, effective sleep is also dependent on each individual's circadian rhythm.
For instance, if a nightfill worker is accustomed to sleeping during the day and working during the night, and they're been following this pattern without fail for the last 5 years. But they stay awake for a full 24 hour period, and try to instead sleep at night... even though they're exhausted and need sleep, such sleep won't be as effective as if they had followed their normal sleeping pattern.
I've also heard that the amount of effective sleep required can be affected by genetics.

You don't need to catch up on all lost sleep.
True.

True.
That's good. Otherwise, I think I'd need to sleep for like, 3 years straight. :o
-
Do it now, dont get up and study(unless this is a test in the afternoon, which then I say get up and study). I can never get myself up in time to actually focus on what im doing, im not a morning person.
-
stay up all night and day
good for ur health
-
One time me and my buddy planned an all nighter, we ended up having a pillow fight and one thing led to another and next thing you know we were making out on the sofa
-
While I never did it for VCE, I've done it for pretty much every single exam/test/assignment that I've sat/handed in in uni, and it has worked WONDERS. Well, wonders for results, not so much for my mood and health. :D
-
I can't do them.
All nighters are pretty much the norm here, but for the past two or three weeks I've been sleeping about three or four hours a night in an effort to do my work (so not all nighters, but almost)... and it's been horrible. My grades have slipped as a result, and I've been constantly sick. Doing these long term really affects your efficiency - I was going to go to the library for ten hours sometime last week, stayed for six, fell asleep four times, and just gave up. I got seven hours of sleep last night in an effort to recover and I'm still not OK. Argh, please don't screw yourself over by not sleeping.

Actually, you're not doing them 'long'term enough. :P
I got 4 hours sleep a night from yr 9-yr 12. I was fine. :D Eventually you get used to it, although now I've returned to normal.

it's actually pretty bad.
i did this for chem, (slept at 4:30am~, exam at 9, woke up 7:30, had been studying ~14hours, first time i'd looked at unit 4 since 2.5months)
forgot every single formula (or perhaps i hadnt learned it well enough?)
anyways only do it if it's really necessary
i felt slow during the exam - like i wasnt functioning well.
-
My own experience is that you get more used to sleeping less/pulling all-nighters after you do them consistently enough (took me about a week). That said, it really does affect your health, and recovering is always a bit of a bitch. Personally speaking, I feel semi-drunk constantly (lol) nowadays, and I'm not showing any signs of getting a normal sleeping routine again any time soon (it's been about a week and a since my last all nighter?).
-
I've had an all nighter once in my life :) my advice is not to, try to cut back on sleep, but don't go overboard with it
-
All-nighters: good when they involve hanging out with friends and definitely not doing anything educational, horrible when they're for studying. I've only ever tried the former variation.
-
Did allnighters for all my vce latin assessments . Never ended up doing much in the way of latin but results didn't seem to suffer so I certainly endorse them. :D

I remember getting addicted to spesh one day, when I hit the kinematics section. Worked from 4 in the afternoon to 11pm. Said to myself one more question. I looked up again and it was 2am. I ended up doing another 2 exercises and it was a really good night. Until I had to ge up the next morning. It was by choice, but then I suppose it wasn't exaclty and all nighter either.
-
I don't think I've strictly had an all-nighter... I've definitely had plenty of "2 hours sleep" nights though. Even if an assignment or essay isn't due the next day (unfortunately, it usually is), I prefer to hit an assignment all in one sitting. Otherwise it takes me too long in the second sitting to gather all my thoughts again to finish it.
Though in saying that, I always take a break between when I finish writing a piece and when I proofread it. It's like... it's easier to correct something if you've forgotten what you intended to write and can read no more into the words than what you've actually written. Fresh eyes, sort of thing.

I'm most productive when I'm doing shit at night. Needless to say, pulling all nighters work well for me though I hate doing it. Coincidentally, I'm doing one tonight
