Just come out of the exam.. And let me just say, I THOUGHT IT WAS TERRIBLE! :idiot2:
I actually did pretty well on the past exams too :(
-
I have 3 words to say.
Screw you, VCAA.
-
Did anyone else find it completely different from past exams? I mean, MC was fine, but those short answer questions? Er..
-
I thought it was alright, it was easier than last year's at least! Wasn't too hard or too easy - nice way to end the study design I reckon
-
Details about what was asked?
-
anyone laugh a little inside at the pube plant
-
anyone laugh a little inside at the pube plant
Pretty much sums up the whole exam LOL most memorable part of the exam
-
What?? I thought that 2008-2010 were easy! This year's one: I opened the book at reading time, and i'm like "Oh shiiiiit"
There were some questions that i've definitely come across before, like that Cellulose vs enzyme question. They are definitely pulling those questions from the old study design and just tweeking it that tiny bit.
Btw, doesn't this study design continue until 2014?
-
The picture of the cat made me laugh, no write up of a experiment which sadden me quite a bit. :( However it was an alright exam, alot of questions involving immunity. Got the "what type of nucleic acid is in here" wrong for cholroplast wrote rRNA for some odd reason

Woops yeah my bad, thought it was changing next year, awks
-
I found it okay. Slightly different from the past exams though
Can anyone guess for me whether a 61/75 would yield me an A+ or not?
Hoping the A+ cutoff is low this year :knuppel2:
-
I did not do well at all. Left out the last question, rushed the last 2 pages madly with 3 min left :( and that poison ivy q.. Was that even an allergic/inflammation response?..
-
I screwed up probably the easiest mark in the whole paper!!!
Forgot to add 36-38ATP for the cellular respiration question! :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:
That said, it was okay. A few questions threw me off at first (like why would Paul shampoo his hair? :idiot2:
Definitely harder than 2006-2010, but think I did alright :)
PS are the answers up yet?
-

Man I wrote rRna as well lawl. Are you sure it's wrong? There's ribosomes in chloroplasts!
also jane, not sure if you have to add 36-38 ATP for the mark.
-

Really? Pretty sure you do... was it on any of the past assessment reports?
Oh I hope not :P
And they'll probably accept rRNA and DNA because rRNA makes up ribosomes....

also think i got the placebo question wrong, wrote "it was used as a control to compare against the experiment" teacher also said i was wrong and it is a "fake drug that would have no results"

I mean I honestly duno how anal they'll be, like.... the energy is sorta given? duno.

Also, what did people put for the plant one: abscisic acid or ethylene?
-
what the rna coming out of nucleus mRNA or tRNA and if i wrote tRNA and it was m but got the function of tRNA right do i get one mark
-
It was weird -.- What happened to the usual experiment question ahah? I prepared myself for that. No idea how I went though :/
-

abscisic acid

It is a fake drug that would have no results but that's what makes it the control... It proves that the probiotics actually have an effect.
-
i spelt abscissic acid wrong. ):
^ that's how i spelt it , LOL

Said something like that except I just said "it's a control in place of the independent variable (probiotic) so that results can be attributed to the effect of the probiotic" (or something like that) ... you think that would get the mark?

OMG Me too!~ Hi five.

I also spelt it like that... :'(
what the rna coming out of nucleus mRNA or tRNA and if i wrote tRNA and it was m but got the function of tRNA right do i get one mark
Personally I wrote mRNA as it copies the genetic code of DNA in the nucleus and looks like it was moving towards the ribosomes on the endoplasmic reticlum. You would need the function of mRNA to get the mark.

True..

omg like what the hell...exam = so hard :(
i thought there was going to be an expiremental design or rational design question! i would have done better if those were on it
and i left two questions out
omg fml :'(
i wrote abscisic acid too for that random plant question and for siemese cat i chose A (is that right o.o)
i wrote mRNA for the digram question.
what did you guys right for the "the person has an infection if blablabla" multiple choice question? i was indecisive about histamine released from cells or pathogen in intestines. at the end i chose pathogen one but now im thinking its wrong? :/
-
I was about to COMMIT half way through~
The strangest exam ever, but I did alright... I guess... I hope... I wish?

Definitely. I also think you'll get the mark for the aerobic respiration equation... and I'm 99% sure it's Ethylene that causes abscission, and I stupidly wrote abscissic acid. Not so sure about the rRNA instead of DNA though, let's hope for both our sakes they accept both!

Think it was the pathogen one... histamine could be a result of something else, not necessarily an infection.
And for the siamese cat one I think it was D (my teacher agrees) because all the other results contradicted the information...
EDIT: They might have to accept both ethylene and abscisic acid. Quick google, some say ethylene and some say abscisic acid... ???
These chemicals, primarily ethylene and abscisic acid, make trees lose their leaves by severing the link between the leaf and the tree.

I wrote histamine :S
Siamese cat I had D as it seemed like the cat produced pigments when below 37 degrees so as its place outside its color would changed?

I wrote "Water", will that be right? since it's injected and has no effect whatsoever?
Seen one of these questions before somewhere, and it said water...

Wow, I got something right~
-
Did anyone write their multiple choice answers down?
-
i didnt even do the placebo question :(
although i thought this exam was easier than 2010s
for siemese q. wasnt the cats colour whitish colour (light not dark), so why is A wrong?
o and plant hormone daigram multiple choice question... was it giberellens or increased production of ethylene?
-
yeah wrote abscissic acid
was tossing up for 5 minutes in reading time
i knew NOB said 'absiccsic acid does not cause a;bkj;ckafdj;dasjf'
but
i wasn't sure if ethylene did
and there was only 1 tiny line, and AA is definitely involved, if only indirectly
they might except both
-

Think they have to because the internet says both are involved.
And A was wrong because it said newborn kittens were born dark (so lots of pigment produced) and the temperature would have been around 38 degrees. This contradicts the informations given.

o and plant hormone daigram multiple choice question... was it giberellens or increased production of ethylene?
Was this the one with the rare plant? Rare plant was larger so I had put gibberllins as they cause cell elongation in stems.

Did anyone else NOT get "stop smoking" for that alzheimer's MC question. Kinda made me lol as in that case nicotine was good to stop the disease =P.

I had put stopped smoking :2funny:! It did suggest it was good as it has the same effect as AcT, got me stumped quite a bit.

Haha yeah, I was just like, well if anyone I know gets Alzheimer's I'll tell them to start smoking.
Either that or cigarette companies are finding new and improved ways to market their products =P.
-

Haha I put the one that stopped the enzyme.
See, smoking is healthy! :)
-
yeah one that stopped the enyzmne
-
:/ i put ethylene...omg its wrong :(
i forgot that its connected with fruit ripening - i kept thinking it makes things flower and thought those leafy things were flowers :idiot2:
worst
exam
ever.
alzhaemers question, i chose the 2nd drug in the table? is that the one that stopped the enzyme
-
Did anyone get a copy of the exam?
-

I didn't... and don't ask!

There was one that stopped the enzyme? :'(
Didn't have time to look back on that, DAM IT :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

Funny. We do Alzheimer's in Psych and I was asked the Q after the Bio exam. ;D ;D
-
Anyone get a copy of the exam paper?
-
Anyone get a copy of the exam paper?
Sorry I couldn't, supervisor told me my teacher had it. I asked him he didn't have it so the other biology teacher probably had it :(
Will be heading to school and try to get the paper for you Russ!

Wow! That's a massive surprise that there was no experiment write up. Did they at least have something where they required you to analyse how well an experiment was set up, or something like that?
-

That'd be great! But if you haven't left and need to revise for Chem please don't disrupt your Chem prep just for this.
-
lex - they had one question about controlling variables 2 marks
-
Oh okay, that's fair then - they tested it to some extent as expected. It's actually good to test it in a different way, people just have formulas for the experimental design question now. How did you go?
-
i felt a bit ripped off cos i spent quite a bit prepping for exp design :(
i went pretty well, think i l os the mark, cos i wrote ABscisic acid instead of ethylene, was tossing up :(

It was the one where the pathogen was found in the leg muscle
It couldn't have been the others because A. histamine doesn't necessarily mean an infection (c.f. pollen etc.)
B. Finding bacteria in the intestine doesnt mean it's infected - there's good bacteria that live in harmony with our body
I forgot what the other option was - probably because it was really stupid
anyway, yeah I MAY be wrong, but i'm pretty sure that's right
answer was D
-
yeah i had the same answer, but i thought it was C , but i'm probably wrong, i don't remember the letters
-
Bazza16, i think you got it right. its abscisic acid isnt it?
nature of biol book seems to suggest that ABA plays a main part in dropping/abscission of leaves:
Fruit that is about to fall from a plant, and dormant buds, both contain high levels
of abscisic acid.
so sad that there was no experimental design q. =((((
-
Aw, that doesn't sound too good but having said that let's not exaggerate our mistakes and forget about the good things we've done. It was your first exam ever for you guys so it's expected that you might make some mistakes and misjudge the amount of time that you have. Still, I'm confident you would have done well and will have plenty to build on and learn from for unit 4.
-
im on my way home now, and no worries russ had to ask my chem teacher something
-
That abscisic acid question.. I dont quite remember it, but im pretty sure it said something about abscission.. Its not called abscisic acid for nothing haha
-
im on my way home now, and no worries russ had to ask my chem teacher something
You got it? Awesome, post it or message it to me
-
I'VE GOT THE PAPER GUYS!!!! I'll send it to you lex when i get home if no one else does because I get home at 6pm.
I just had a biol class and we went through the paper. I aced Short answer got every question right but M.C was a disaster!
I'll post up some answers in a moment to multiple choice.
-
Good to hear that you went well, and don't be too concerned about MC - at least you did really well on SA. You can lose quite a few marks and end up doing well.
Cheers mate, that'd be great! Thanks for doing that. We'll try and get it up before 6pm but otherwise that'll be a nice backup plan :)
-
im on my way home now, and no worries russ had to ask my chem teacher something
Oh okay that's good, at least you weren't inconvenienced :) Email me the exam at [email protected] and scocliffe (who's about to come out of his Med exam soon) and I will work on it and try it get it finished for you guys tonight. Cheers. And Russ, don't even think about racing us - it's two against one!! What time do you have work?
-

My teacher said it was abscisic acid.
-
what was the answer for the knee-jerk reaction question?
-
^ B.
That neuron went to the brain, and the brain isn't involved in a reflex arc...
-
I thought it was fucking ridiculous. I was aiming for an A+ and I'll be lucky to get a C. I said an allergic response for the ivy which is wrong! and since when did we learn about placebos? and there was no experimental design! And I found all of the diagrams reallly difficult to understand. I found 2006 - 2010 easy, so I was like ok, I can do this. But it was really unfair.
-
Um... A. Inhibition of neuron M will allow the leg to flex (or bend)
-
Does anyone know when we find out the results?

August 8th.

Um... A. Inhibition of neuron M will allow the leg to flex (or bend)
? But cutting the neuron at K will have no effect...?

Oh god. It wasn't allergic response for the poison ivy question?!?!?!

I don't have to do plant questions, you can't win :)

My biology teacher was right about no experimental design :D Which is quite logical, since students seemed to be mastering it, I don't think VCAA would see the need to test it again.
-

why is allergic response wrong?
-
^ Wondering that too.
-
i chose A for neuron question.
i didnt write that it was an allergic response cause its POISON ivy..not harmless substance that would classify an allergen?
i wrote about inflammation.
-
Allergic responce is correct.
-
So if you talked about inflammation, it would be completely wrong? 0/3 ? :(
-

why is allergic response wrong?
I think because poison ivy isn't an allergen... it is harmful, and allergens are usually harmless but the body just overreacts. I don't think the question asked if it was or wasn't though... ??? I didn't say one way or the other I just described the histamine-mast cell-IgE response.

-
o wat... :(
damn thats another question wrong.
for how antibodies work question i wrote it either coats bacteria attracting more macrophages, causes agglutination/precipitation of bacteria or lysing cell wall of bacteria. do i get marks off cause i forgot that complementary proteins actually do the rupturing part =(
-
it said he was 'hypersensitive' which is what iu wrote :S
-
There was similar hype over last years exam and how hard it was, I doubt the cut-off will go below 59 and also VCAA rarely give two answers correct to one multiple choice question. I can't see them giving two in this case, since the only time I've seen them give two is when there is a problem with the way the question is worded and that it could be intepreted in more than one way. I haven't personally seen the exam so this mightn't be the case.
well done to all of you!
although I don't want to dissapoint you minus 3-5 marks from everything you think you got correct, since examiners will take marks of for semantics. But on the bright side, you only roguhly two 69's for a 50!
-
If the question was to name antibody functions then yeah, you probably needed to reference the complement cascade for lysis
-
So if you talked about inflammation, it would be completely wrong? 0/3 ? :(
Apprently inflammation had something do with it. but allergic responce is also correct.
-
it said he was 'hypersensitive' which is what iu wrote :S
Said it was a sensitivity reaction, not hypersensitive... but it could mean the same thing...
-
hey guys, im tutoring a Bio kid and was wondering if anyone has a copy of the paper for me to look at so i know how she would have gone... also hard exam = easier A+ just quietly

"Here's how the poison ivy response occurs. Urushiol makes its way down through the skin, where it is metabolized, or broken down. Immune cells called T lymphocytes (or T-cells) recognize the urushiol derivatives as a foreign substance, or antigen. They send out inflammatory signals called cytokines, which bring in white blood cells. Under orders from the cytokines, these white blood cells turn into macrophages. The macrophages eat foreign substances, but in doing so they also damage normal tissue, resulting in the skin inflammation that occurs with poison ivy.
The allergic reaction to poison ivy is known as delayed hypersensitivity. "
From the net. So an inflammation + a hypersensitivity reaction is involved?... Damnit ! I was tied between writing about either, should've written about both..

Question 9 didn't come out right so this is what it says
Antibodies passed from a mother to her baby during breast-feeding would be best described as:
A) naturally acquired, passive immunity
B) naturally acquired, active immunity
C) artificially acquired, passive immunity
D) artificially acquired, active immunity
And here's the link to the VCAA 2011 BIO exam enjoy!

what isn't the answer C ?
-

It's marked twice so half marks are possible. That's what I heard.
-
19 has to be B.
It says "thigh muscle flexes leg." If this is inhibited it can't flex.

I wrote inflammation was one cause of the red patches and too much histamine production was another cause for thr red patches and blisters. I wonder if i was supposed to write both :/

It's B because the rest have Thymine and no thymine is in RNA

jane1234 why did you say B for M.C Q13?

Sorry but I have to prep for work now, can't finish them. Probably would have skipped some of the last question anyway. As demonstrated earlier in this thread, I'm not perfect, these may not be correct and certainly aren't written to a perfect VCE standard. Lex and scocliffe will publish their ConnectEd answers later, those should be much better than my rushed job

Thymic function is likely to correlate to weight. A weight increase is likely to indicate increased activity. Increased fat amounts (with age) indicate decreased activity. Thymic function seems to decrease after puberty.
b
Antigen in tissue is taken up by macrophages and dendritic cells for presentation to the immune system in the lymph nodes. However, Paul has previously been exposed to the poison ivy and thus has memory cells circulating; these T cells activate and stimulate the inflammatory response. This causes macrophage activation and cytokine release, which explains the red patches and blisters. The spread is explained by antigen uptake into lymphatics and circulation, allowing movement throughout body.

As referenced in b), Paul has an effector memory cell reservoir that will immediately respond to any future exposure to poison ivy. As such, he should take care to avoid contact by the covering of skin

I think they will except either DNA or RNA if you explained what is going on. As chloroplasts have their own DNA and ribosomes, they would require RNA transcripts as well to transcribe their genes.
I think they may have been getting at this, because they actually wanted you to explain in the next column.

RE: antibodies.
Light chains don't bind to the Fc region yes, but as far as I know, drawing them doesn't require you to have them on the outside or inside.
-
c
Sally is correct. Enzymes are predominatly protein based and thus this macromolecule cannot be an enzyme. Cellulose is a polymer of saccharides (sugars), which are the repeating unit displayed.
You micht also want to say there is no nitrogen because it is not a protein, thus cellulase.

Didn't Sally say it was an enzyme?? Wasn't Toby the one who said it was cellulose

Oh yeah true, Nitrogen is probably the best way to distinguish them and what VCAA will want.
Fc = the tail region that doesn't bind antigen
Toby was the one who said cellulase

No it was the other way around.
-
Nope, Sally said it was the cellulose and Toby said it was the enzyme and he was wrong because theres an absence of Nitrogen in the molecule
-
hold on the molecule was cellulose because it didnt contain a nitrogen yer ? only contained C,H,O
-
do you get penalised for wrong spelling?
No. Unless your spelling is atrocious and they can't distinugish what you are trying to say.

That's one of the reasons.

That question about the thymus .. doesn't that correlate to the amount of lymphocytes, and how it decreases as you age?
-
Yes, I was rushing. Full detail would have been to discuss testosterone and the effect it has on the thymus and that's why there's a decrease after puberty
-
That question about the thymus .. doesn't that correlate to the amount of lymphocytes, and how it decreases as you age?
Yeah, As you age, there are not as many T cells maturing.
-
didnt the thymus get heavier as the body produced more T cells that matured in thymus so as the body created more cells that migrated to the thymus to mature it weighed more ?

what did you guys put for , how would the presence of a trap effect infestation of the crop ?

-
zzz i put b :(
Yeah, that is unlucky. Temperature regulation is indeed under homeostatic control, but I agree with tee.wreck's explanation in that the cooling is not really due to a response mediated by the body, which does not make it the best answer.
-
22/25.. A bit shattered really..
Now I can lose at most 10 marks for SA if the A+ mark is 62 ish :(
I screwed up the non-specific defence for bacteria and chose interferons. I could have sworn the word "bacteria" was not in the question when I did it :(
-
:/ i put ethylene...omg its wrong :(
i forgot that its connected with fruit ripening - i kept thinking it makes things flower and thought those leafy things were flowers :idiot2:
worst
exam
ever.
ethylene is definitely correct. abscisic acid was thought to have caused abscission but we know now that it creates seed dormancy among other things. my notes say:
Abscisic acid: inhibits growth, creates seed dormancy (until overridden by gibberellins), closes stomata
Ethylene: ripens fruit, causes flowers to die, stimulates abscision
hope this helps :D
did anyone else not get to finish the exam, i was writing crazily for the last 20 mins and still didn't finish the last page! ARGH! it was so long!
alzhaemers question, i chose the 2nd drug in the table? is that the one that stopped the enzyme
-
why is the enzyme called 'protease'? :)
-
why is the enzyme called 'protease'? :)
Because it breaks down proteins. In this question they were referring to the breakdown of antibodies (which are proteins).
-
why is the enzyme called 'protease'? :)
Proteases are enzymes which break down proteins. Antigens/immunoglobulins are proteins. Therefore, the protease breaks down the antibody, and the pathogen avoids being captured by the immune system.
-
Oh thank god ethylene is right for the abscission one... got 20/25 for MC :(
-
Was the poision ivy an allergen therefore causes the whole histamine, mast cell reacton??
please... please....
-
YES, i got the protease one! lol at least I have that going for me... :D
-
I put the histamine thingy for the poison ivy... its an allergen... and it causes inflammation which was the red patches. but how does it cause blisters???
-
Solutions up:
http://www.connecteducation.com.au/
-
hold on so abscissic acid is wrong or will they accept both
-
We think that they may accept both but in most cases ethylene is responsible. There are some plants that also have AA involved.
-
Hmm most of my answers were similar to that, but from the way I write I probably lost at least 50 marks for terrible explanations.
-
Hmm most of my answers were similar to that, but from the way I write I probably lost at least 50 marks for terrible explanations.
My thoughts exactly. Hate it when you pretty much have the concept, but it's written in a way that's a bit ridiculous and for the most part illegible haha
-

omg it did my head in !
-
does the gat count towards our score? i really hope so :(
-
does the gat count towards our score? i really hope so :(
LOL no only if you apply for special consideration. It can also go towards mediating your school's overall sac marks.
-
i see no point in GAT really
-
glad i didn't lose marks on MC, makes a 70 + that much more realistic :)
though when i had 10 minutes at the end of the exam, i forgot to check that i inputted the MC all correctly into the sheet, and wondered about the ABA/Ethylene question ( to which i put ABA :( )
-
25/25 for mc, guessed the one about the fungus though :). total of 69-71 I think from self marking, but we're always easier on ourselves. I answered the one about the thymus completely wrong, i think i must have no read the question fully.
I also wasn't quite sure on the poison ivy, I wrote about histamine and IgE antibodies but failed to mention inflammation, so will lose 1-2 marks there I think.
Hoping for an A+.
As for the paper on a whole, I think the multiple choice was fairly straightforward, and easier than previous exams while the short answer wasn't as easy to tell what the examiners wanted you to write as previous ones.
August can't come fats enough...
