Luke and I are on it...should be ready some time next term.
-
cool idea
-
Current students writing exam papers? Ambitious, I like.
Good luck. :)
-
Can't wait!
-
Looking forward to it boys, remember to get it cross referenced as many times as possible!

You should see tush, if there is a needle in a haystack - he will find it.
But nonetheless, it will be passed on.

Just so you know guys, the extended response section will be very challenging, but I'll make sure it stays within the course.
Also, I'm going to make this paper quite short, because it'd be good if I can allow you guys some time to digest the more challenging questions.
Most of them are coming from left-field => so applying your knowledge to very unfamiliar situations.

Basically, it's probably going to be the complete reverse of Unit 3 this year, fairly straightforward with some slightly harder questions in MC, with a lot of strength for SA.
-
Thushan, just don't kill us, ok?

Well I've been fairly nice in the MC. But I cannot speak for the SA :P

Yeah, I already wrote the first two questions; they are quite challenging, but I think you guys can do them.
Change of heart, most likely we're talking 6 ext response qns, 3 from each AOS, to a total of 60-70 marks.
-
I just love the fact that you are in year 12 and writing an exam for which you are currently doing.
goodluck!
-
Wait, just so to get this clear.
Have you guys finished the unit 4 course already? And have you done enough checkpoints/unit 4 papers to get a feel of what the unit 4 exam is like?

lol this time last year I had no idea what we were doing in unit 4, these guys truly are dedicated.
Wish you guys the best and well done!

I've finished Unit 4 and have done quite a bit of checkpoints/VCAA exams from pre-2008 that included all the equilibrium stuff, plus I've had a quick browse of current exams to get a taste of what they like to ask.
I can't speak for thushan, however I know he's completed the equivalent of Unit 4 stuff for IChO training - which he is currently jet-setting off as we speak! :) (or at least soon haha)
But I think ultimately, this is more of a training run. The MC won't really have many tricks, but in saying that there also won't be the uncertainty in answers etc, they are all within the course and valuable to know/check your understanding...
Whether we produce a second is another thing, but I'll see how I go. If I come across questions which I feel are highly important, I'll take note and just add them to a collection. If I get enough to fill an exam, then another will be made, but it all depends on how much time and creativity we have left before exams :)
-
Wow Luken93 how did you finish the unit 4 chemistry course already when school holidays have just begun?
-
Haha would generally be a bit concerned if we had current students writing exams for their own subjects, but I think with Luke and Thushan we've pretty much got the best pair possible for the job (Y)

Yeah, from the week following the exam until about a week ago. There isn't too much in the course, you'll be surprised yourself!

Haha cheers for the support Dev, although I think Mr Modesty deserves the credit! Afterall, I'm not the one heading off to Turkey :P

What are the key differences in chemical and nuclear reactions?
-
Chemical reactions preety much just invovles the transfering of electrons e.t.c where as nuclear reactions split and change the nuclei of atoms. so chemical -> electrons, nuclear -> nuclei/nucleus
-
What are the key differences in chemical and nuclear reactions?
Is this a test question? hahaha
Nuclear reactions actually break down the nuclear force within atoms, and break them apart/join them together in nuclear fission/fusion reactions. Because so much more energy is stored within the atoms, this is why nuclear energy produces so much.
Chemical, however, just involves the movement of electrons/atoms, whether it be sharing, giving, taking etc.
-
In chemical reactions no ‘different’ elements are produced, the atoms are rearranged.
In nuclear reactions different elements are produced, i.e. the products contain different elements to the reactants.

Okay?

Luke said he finished the course, not that he was fully exam-ready...

Exam paper is in progress, Luken has written the MCQs and I've looked over them. He may have rewritten his MCQs for me to look a second time.
I've written 4 short answer questions so far, and I plan to have 6 in total. May slip in a 7th question if i feel the paper is too short. When I finish writing the questions I'll give them to luken to look over.
I'll put the paper on VN sometime this term or these term holidays, after luken and I am sure that the paper is error-free.
EDIT: 5 short answer questions done.

Yeah, will get back into perhaps changing a few other Qs etc after UMAT is over, but it should be finished by the school holidays. We'll get some people to check it over first before we release it to you guys, afterall we want it to be quality rather than speed hahaha
-
Okay, I finished writing the SA section. Will send to Luken to read.
-
Luken and scocliffe09 have the SA section now, luken is doing the paper as I write this.

A+ cut-off ~30/75?
(don't us you've gone all "weak" on us :P)

Hahaha not that bad, perhaps more of a Biol cutoff :P

Actually, as it stands the paper is out of 20 + 63 = 83, with 20 MC and 7 SA qns

It looks like a marathon :o
-
When you guys release it you should open up a "poll" for results and work out a special VN A+ cut off.

+1, good idea
I think the big question will be: can anyone will finish it all under the time limit?
Regardless, a hard paper is a good paper. Well done thushan and luke!
-
thanks pi
hmm...the VN A+ cutoff, hey that's an idea! Well, this means that I'll have to write a detailed marking scheme and notes along with the answers...

Your results will inevitably be skewed pretty badly if you do it via a poll, it's a good thing to do alongside the paper but don't put too much faith in whatever number you get!
-
true. guys please be honest!
-
OK. Paper got teacher approval. I have a pre-final copy sitting right in front of me right now. Luke's doing a final check.
Does anyone want to volunteer to try this paper, so we can gauge the difficulty of it? I'm not entirely sure how this would work as the paper would have to be scanned so I could mark it personally...

I'll do it. Email it to me ([email protected]) and I'll give you some feedback this weekend. :)
-
Would also be willing to test it out :)
-
I'll try it if you guys want; loving Unit 4 Chem! :D
-
can i try it out as well? :D
-
I don't mind giving it a try if you need more trials to gauge the difficulty.

Pass it to me, and I can run it though Wayne and Matt Chan.

I have just given my evaluation. It is a very well written exam, veering on the difficult side. I have proposed quite a few changes, but I can't imagine the finalised paper is more than a couple of revisions away.
I suggest someone who has finished chemistry in 2010 should do an evaluation. I would also suggest Luke and Thushan not release it to current year students until it is ready, considering it will benefit these students more if they sat it as a trial paper rather than a 'beta-test'.
Anyhow, great job. :)
