Title: Very stressed! Need help with VCE subject selections. (All advice helps)
Post by: mmonn1906 on July 03, 2011, 09:15:05 pm
Title explains it all.

I have no idea what I'm 'good at', what I 'enjoy' or what even interests me.
Any tips on finding put ^?

Ignore my signature, they're the subjects I was going to pick but now I'm not motivated to do well in any of them. :(

"2014: Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery @ Monash university."
Biology, chemistry, further maths, methods if you're good at maths, and then a random business/humanitarian subject.

I assume you will have done Maths / Science / English / Geography / History / PE + another couple electives (businessy/IT based?)

What did you find you did best in?

I'm a straight A+ student in maths, but don't enjoy it.
B+ in English, and it's ok.
A in IT.

I guess I'll just stick with economics and maths..

If you're that keen on Med

English Methods Chem will fill your top 3
If you're straight A+ in maths Further/Spesh should be another one to do

don't do economics if you're thinking of dropping it though, probably just go with Biology and something else.

That's why I've done this topic also, I don't know if I want to do med. :S
And I think it may have been you but someone said not to do spesh if I don't enjoy maths.

I might move into further this term and do the 3+4 in yr 11.

Keep your options open with methods and chem in my opinion :)

Let's you do science, engineering, biomed, med, pharmacy(?), and a heap more. And methods is needed for commerce.

If you want to keep your options open, perhaps
Methods, English, Chem, Biology, BM, IT ?

The other dude, I hear thesame bout Spesh too.

And Taiga, good point.
I'll probably do methods, further, economics, chemistry, English, and an easy subject like IT or BM. (further, Eco, eng and BM/IT being the top 4)

Weird question to ask, but are you 100% sure you don't like Maths? Like, I know that I thought I didn't like it, so I really reluctantly went into Spec this year, but I find that I kinda enjoy it a lot more then I thought I did and it's way better than what I initially though would be really good (Accounting - most boring subject ever).

Doing further --> Spec may be easier in terms of content, but I know that learning further level crap and then studying it enough to perfect my technique so as to get a score in the high 40's would be much more of a pain in the ass then spending time learning difficult yet rewarding concepts in Spec., and being able to practice Q's which actually require thought and probably aiming for a raw SS of 38+ (I think it's scaled to like a 44-45, duno).

I was in your position last year though, and I chose methods, spec, chem, eng, bio 3/4 and accounting. Bio unit 3 at least is pretty interesting and I think if you put in the time to study (practice exams) you'll do well, and based on your background you'll probably do fine in methods/sciences.

Man if you're aiming for a high ATAR you don't want IT/BM being in the top 4. They typically scale down too much + the cohort at MPSC is weak in both of those subjects (trust me, I'm in Y12 now at the school). Does MPSC offer economics? I'm pretty sure no one is doing it this year so I hope for your sake that changes next year.

In year 11 it's Info Tech but in Y12 you have to choose I.T. Apps or Software Dev (or do both like me :P)

If I were you I'd take up software development as I find it more rewarding + the scaling isn't too harsh. Keep in mind there's only eight students in my software dev. class this year (once again, this might be a subject that doesn't have enough students next year).

But if the cohort is bad, and I get 90s doesn't that mean I get EXTRA marks? ugh, so confusing.

And you're from MPSC? OMG!! Haha, first mpsc student I've seen on here. Private message me telling me your name?
Also, I'm already doing economics (in year 10) there's only one class and it's only got 12 people in it.

:)

At the end of last year, i swapped out of business management and into spesh - at this stage i wasnt the biggest fan of maths, i was a good math student but didnt have a passion for it.
But after doin spesh this year, ive realised that i do like learning these different and bizzare math concepts. Because i came to like the stuff we did in spesh i actually did hw for it and studied for sacs!
If you only slightly like maths i reckon you should have a serious think about doing spesh. It's definitely worth it.
Just have a read of the GMA or Spesh textbook and read through some of the complex numbers/vectors/mechanics stuff. If you think you will like learning about that stuff then go for spesh.
Also spesh helps methods A LOT!! All my teachers told me that before i chose it and i didnt believe them... but yeah by doin spesh i think aobut some of the harder application questions in different ways and i actually believe that i can do them which is a masssive confidence booster in sacs and exams.

In 2010, no one at MPSC scored 40 or over in BM. You don't get "extra marks" for being near rank 1; I'm pretty sure all it means is your sacs won't be moderated negatively. The other problem with BM is its scaling makes it a bitch to have in the top 4. These 'easier subjects' don't guarantee good scores at all. In fact, it's harder to do well since the course is so easy and most people achieve well, hence more competition. Throw in scaling if you for some reason fall < 40, and then it's GG VCE if BM is in the top 4.

Who's your teacher for Economics?

Janeke Roberts, her office is in block 13. Mr.Zaf might take over next year due to her leaving because she's pregnant.

Yeah, I've already spoken to him about him taking over Economics next year.
He's a top guy.
