Serious Answer
It is used to step up or step down voltage.

Your mobile phone charger has a small transformer inside it to step down the voltage to something like 9V in order to use it to charge your phone.

So basically, a transformer changes the voltage in order to suit certain applications, depending what you want to achieve.

Non-serious Answer
They are robots in disguise divided into two factions: the Autobots and the Decepticons.

What use do they have? No idea, cause havoc around the world I guess.

The autobots fight against the decepticons and vice versa.

Sorry I don't have a firm understanding, I'm not really into transformers  :D
