I've done a little bit research and I found that in past few years Melb Uni used to ranked in 80's of the best universities in the world. However for this very recent year, Melb Uni tumbled down to 128th in world and placed just 6th in Aus, whilst many other unis improved in their rankings, in particular Monash Uni. Does anyone know why is this the case, is it because of the melbourne model or was this introduced because of the poor ranking? Also I'm really suprised that ANU always is ranked 1st in Aus cause before that I've never even heard of such a uni. Anyone know what's good about ANU? Lastly, does these rankings of unis have any sigificance such as employment opportunities, education standards etc? Thx alot guys! :D

where'd you get the rankings from?
-
Pretty easy, just google it. lol
-
Hmm.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Melbourne#Rankings
-
It is only ranked 128th with Webometrics...
Its general Ranking is around 20 - 30 and it is the 2nd best university in Australia (after ANU ofcourse :D)
If you saw Webometrics rankings, you'd realise that there quite outrageous(incorrect spelling?)/heavily biased towards the US....
Sure the US have great universities but surely the top 40 Unis can't all be American Universities :o
Here are some more crazy Webometric Rankings
Cambridge 27 (ranked 2nd by QS - The better university rankers)
Oxford 37 (ranked 3rd by QS)
Yale 41 (ranked 4th by QS)
QS has ANU ranked 16th and UoM ranked 27

those rankings are always so complicated, and they're all over the place. i don't pay much attention to them :D
-
Ah good point guys
-
Mmmmm, ANU.
-
ANU doesn't advertise very much, so that's probably why people aren't so familiar with it. At a recent courses expo at my school, we had universities from all over australia participate, but not ANU. We tried to invite them but... they declined :/
-
Meh, they don't really look for students from Melbourne, moreso for students around Canberra and NSW.
That being said, I do know a fair few Melburnians at ANU. Most, like me, however, came more because they always wanted to go to ANU than because ANU advertised sufficiently.

ANU doesn't need to advertise.
-
I find rankings for particular disciplines more useful
-
can u give me any websites for that?
-
Still wondering why ANU is so high ranked?

Still wondering why ANU is so high ranked?
Because they are good at research
-
they also have CSIRO with them, close by (i dunno lol)
-
ANU doesn't need to advertise.
Lol really? I guess those who can be bothered researching will know about it, but many people I ask at my school haven't heard about it or have thought it to be 'just another' university. For many victorians the only things that exist are Melbourne/Monash.
-
You're right /0
But the biggest thing that shits me about student todya is that they don;t research univesity/admissions properly
It saves alot of trouble/heartache
However perhaps this is a fault of the schools for not encouraging independent learning

Most Victorians don't want to leave Victoria... Few consider USyd or UNSW either, even though they're two of the top unis in Australia.
And as previously stated, one of the main reasons that ANU is ranked first is its research, which is easily the best in Australia. That being said, its undergraduate teachings are also quite highly rated.
-
I'd see many more experts from ANU commenting on the news than any other Australian university, [when I used to watch the news]
-
Hmm I had never heard of ANU until late last yr when I saw what course Eriny was doing.
Now it's my top preferance.

I agree. My careers teacher just seems to assume that because my school's in Geelong everyone wants to go to Deakin.
Melbourne or Monash are ocassionally mentioned but that's about it.

I'm scared of applying for ANU lol

It's far away. I know my parents don't want me to apply. Some of my friends would prefer if I didn't apply. I don't even know if I'd be able to handle it. I know Melbourne so well, it would be weird living somewhere where I was a stranger and where I'd have a lack of geographical understanding
