Title: ...and uni maths?
Post by: fredrick on November 11, 2007, 06:18:31 pm
hey all,
im currently deciding if doing uni maths in yr12 is a step in the right direction.

Subject undertaken in 2007
.Further maths 3/4
Subjects in 2008
english 3/4
methods 3/4
spec 3/4
physics 3/4
uni maths (maybe)

Iam pretty good at maths and enjoy it but, from what i heard doing uni maths aswell makes 4 of my subject maths related and this would b too much in year 12...so what should i do?
Comments appreciated :D

Nah, it sounds good for me. No such thing as too much maths. :P

but yuou know they only take 2 maths subjects towards your enter... so either further/methods/specialist is going to be ignored.

Isn't further math and spec. complete contrasts!

oh :( , i have done further already and i dont think i will be dropping either spec or methods...so no point in uni maths?

no nono
they still take the uni maths, its just one of your methods or spec will likley be dropped.

If youre primarily interetsed in getting a good study score, you probably need to decide whether youre going to do better in methods or specialist, then drop the other... OR alternatively, if you think you did poorly in further, do better in methdos and spec.. they wotn count the worst one. (They still add the incerement from uni maths).

Its just methods and specialist is a big workload, nad if oure going to do better in furhter anyway then itll be a waste of a subject

Nah he's wrong. They can all count. There used to be a rule that only 2 subjects can be in the top 4, which meant that your 3rd maths score would be in bottom 2 (fixing Physics in your top 4, since Uni Maths is automatically an increment subject anyway).

But now you can get all your maths in the top 3, if I'm not mistaken.

if you want to maximise your enter i don't suggest it. doing uni maths without a background in methods 3/4 already is not a good idea. and its a high workload but the max you can get is 5.5 points. not worth it.

This year I'm doing exactly the same set of subjects you're planning on doing next year ... and you're right, it does make it seem like you come to school only to do maths. Personally I found uni maths to be a royal pain in the arse, mainly because I let it sit dormant for most of the semester until when I actually needed to prepare for an assignment/exam. However since you like maths you probably wouldn't do that.

Make sure you double-check whether you can use it as credit towards your preferred uni course. I found out halfway through the year that the software development course I'm planning on doing doesn't have a math unit, so my uni maths is useless to me except for the few extra aggregate points.

oh i always thought they only take 2 maths in your top 4! Can someone confirm this?

iam very confused bout uni maths, my teacher told me to do it but i have little clue on how it goes towards your enter( like is it the same as any other subject and has a study score out of 50?)

It becomes a 10% subject ... so, on top of your aggregate (calculated from your english score + your 3 next best subjects, + 10% of your fifth best subject), you get 4 if you pass, 5 if you get credits (?) and 5.5 if you're getting distinctions/high distinctions.

and also if i plan on doing just further, spec and methods, assuming only 2 of those 3 subjects are accounted for in my top 4, would further maths be in the bottom 2?

Two maths(VCE) will be in your top 4.
The other one will be your increment.
Uni Maths has to be in your increment anyway.

i.e:
English
Spesh*
Methods*
Physics

increments:
further*
uni maths

*Which ever is lowest after scaling is in your increment. Um.. Physics can't be kicked out. LOL.

you are mistaken :P

Maximum of 2 maths may be counted in the primary 4
Maximum of 3 maths (uni maths is regarded as a math subject) may be counted towards the ENTER
Uni Maths must be an increment

So you can't do uni maths, cos only 3 maths in total may be counted towards your ENTER. It's not like you can drop methods or spesh either as methods/spesh are co-requisites for Uni maths

Try accounting instead. If you do, you would have the exact program i did. except i did methods 3/4 in yr 11 and further in yr 12.

you really shouldve done something other than further year. i hope your 100% confident in your physics ability haha, cos its gona be in your top 4 no matter what :)

Oh wait yeah, one maths subject isn't going to count if you have uni maths.

Quote VTAC:

In each of the study areas of English, mathematics, history, Contemporary Australian studies, information technology, LOTE and music:

    * at most two results can contribute to the Primary Four
    * at most three results can contribute to the ENTER, be they VCE results, Extension Study results, or VET results

Ignore my previous post. Or omit one maths from there. Lol.

ok, my math teacher said, 'if u get a higher study score after scaling for further than say methods, further will always be in your bottom 2'(assuming i also undertake spec).

ok so uni maths is a no no, cause then i would have done a math subject for nothing :o  well mayb i should just leave it as 5 subjects for now

your teacher is wrong, he needs to get his facts straight. that was the rules for last year. the rules changed this year (2007).

Oh okay. The rule they changed was Further and Specialist Maths cannot both be in top 4 (now they can, if Methods isn't in it).

UMEP applications closed on Friday. So I'm taking that you're looking at Monash maths. haha.

Definitely have 6 subjects in total though. =)
