Title: Mid-year Exam Results
Post by: xox.happy1.xox on July 27, 2008, 09:10:41 pm
Yes, I know it is early, but with only 8 days to go, what is everyone expecting?

I know how I was feeling last year, awaiting my Psychology results, only to end up getting a C. I was bitterly ashamed.   :-\

Well, let's all stress it out in here!   ;)

Some people like that so they don't go 'oh shit I fail at life :(' or go 'yay, I can slack off' so they can just continue doing what they originally were doing

Our bio teacher said you should definitely look at it, coz if your results are wrong (i know, not very likely but still...) and you don't check till later it might be too late to check your exams for correction mistakes.

You get a letter grade, and if you want the actual raw mark you have to pay like $9-ish for it.

Title: Re: Mid-year Exam Results
Post by: costargh on August 04, 2008, 05:41:37 pm
What do you mean raw or scaled?

The letter grade sticks, as does the numerical value of your grade. It does not change.

The end of year Study Score is what is raw or scaled (study score is raw and subject score is scaled as far as I know)

If you got an A on this exam, it will always be an A

High A+ just refers to your mark being at the higher end of an A+.
For example, if the A+ range was 80-90 out of 90, we would consider around 86-90 to be a high A+...

It's not an "official" VCAA term or anything.
Title: Re: Mid-year Exam Results
Post by: costargh on August 04, 2008, 06:06:43 pm
i heard that there is such a thing as low A or high A etc low A+?
can anyone explain?

does it affect ur chances and opportunities?

Basically your numerical score is categorised into a letter score (eg. A+ or A) but say if the A+ cut off was 80/90 and you got 81/90, but someone else got 90/90... your mark would be a LOW A+ and theres would be a HIGH A+. Basically this means that while you both got an A+, there mark was higher than yours and thus if you both performed at the same level as you did both for the mid-year exam (for the end of year exam), they would be lined up for a 50 SS while you would be lined up for a lower range 40+.
Even though you could both have A+ A+ A+.... the actual numerical value of the A+ does change the score that you are given.

So it definitely does affect your ENTER and if you like 'your chances and opportunites'.

In this way, it can be seen that a HIGH A and a LOW A+'s are very similar marks, but one sounds better than the other lol. (sometimes there is only 1 mark differnce etc)

You can see it now if you want (now, as in within the next few weeks)
Follow the link below

Getting a Statement of Marks (alternatively) allows you to see what mark you got (numerical) , eg. 82/90

So what you mean I got a B for chemistry has that grade been affect by scalling yet or that is my actual proper mark without scalling.
Title: Re: Mid-year Exam Results
Post by: costargh on August 04, 2008, 06:28:25 pm
Your letter grades aren't scaled. Your study score is.

Eg. A+ A+ A+ = 42 (raw- before scaling)... might scale up to 47 depending on the subject

It is the study score that is scaled, not the numerical value of the A+'s

O really

So you are telling me that I got a B without scalling in chemistry. Omg.

For the statement of marks,

Do they tell you what you got for each question. ie 4/5

or just the total number of marks you achieved on the whole exam.

Cheers

Looking over the statistics,
For biology, the ratio of females to males is 1.93 : 1
For physics, the ratio of females to males is 1 : 3.22
For psychology, the ratio of females to males is 2.79 : 1

I reckon that's pretty interesting!

Not necessairily, it all depends on how High or Low your A and A+ was.

Even a low A could still get you around the 37-39 mark

that is correct. exam scores are not statistically moderated.
however, also keep in mind that statistical moderation is not scaling.

statistical moderation is changing SAC scores (a GA) according to exam scores.
scaling is changing study scores according to competition and "difficulty".
completely different things, neither of which involve directly changing exam scores.

exam scores does NOT change.

spot on in all costargh I'd say
though its very ambiguous and hard to judge because the B A+ A+ could be a 40 if those A+'s were 100% but if they were the lowest quality, it could also be a 34

Yeh exactly. I go with the most probable score though. :P

Would a study score of 30-35 be possible if I got a C+ for the mid-year but finished with 92/100 for unit 3 sacs?

depends on how your school goes in the exam
it appears your ranking is fairly high (?), if you have a good cohort [that scores well in the exam] the moderation process will be in your favour, and you should be able to get in the 30~35 range
also keep in mind that for subjects with mid-year exams, SACs are totalled from unit 3 and unit 4, and together count as a single GA. so you'd also want to keep that average up for U4 SACs

hmm what about (asking for a friend):

A, A+, A+

A,A,A+

? thanks,
Title: Re: Mid-year Exam Results

1) it depends on which subject (competition in that subject, as well as weighting of each GA for that subject)
2) school/cohort performance in the exam (statistical moderation of SACs)
3) it depends on where the grade sit (high A+ is very different to low A+)
it is very hard to make a prediction for study-scores, you can only try to do as well as you can.

but based on gut feeling:
A, A+, A+ might be low 40s
A,A,A+ might be high 30s

if the A was high,
and both A+ was high,
is there a chance of a mid 40's?

I have a question, how does the rest of your cohort doing good/bad affect your score? I'm just curious.  :)

something along the lines of: http://vcenotes.com/forum/index.php/topic,581.msg12582.html#msg12582

i.e. your SAC GA score depends largely on the cohort.

Question, my accounting class has a partnership with another school, my teacher only recieved the results for our class. Does this mean that VCAA will only check our class against our results in SACs or will they also check the other classes (partnership class)?

if by partnership you meant your class is in a joint cohort with partnership classes because of small class-sizes, then yes.
VCAA will treat the partnership as a single cohort, and the SACs of all the classes will be moderated together (hence the exam scores for all classes will be used).

Hey i got A+ for chem and A for physics.

I also got A for sacs for physics......

So wat are my chances of getting a 40 for physics cuz i wanna root this subject.

My sacs were mid A and exam was mid-high A....

so if i end up with

A A A+ A+ can i still get there?

How about you just try your best, and see how you do.
Don't worry about the possibilities of getting certain scores.
The less time worrying about it, and the more time studying, the more likely you will 'root' this subject.
No-one can actually predict your precise scores from just letter grades!

I'm thinking along the same lines as Ahmad; in 2006 when they stuffed up the methods/spec study scores, they only adjusted scores higher, they didn't lower anyone's SS that was erronously high.

Anyway, I hope its good news
