Title: Maths overload, is further worth doing
Post by: kurrymuncher on August 03, 2008, 04:38:12 pm
Hey guys, im having trouble with my subject selection. Im in year 11 and doing methods 3 and 4 cas, im doing specialist next year but i dont know if i should also do further. I asked my teachers and they keep on telling me not to waste my time on further maths and apply for uni maths at monash uni. Im not sure wat to do.

the scenarios are:

i could do specialist, further and uni maths  (alot of maths)

or

i could just do specialist and uni maths, and maybe pick another subject like media ( which im interested in)

I dont know if further is the right choice for me, but everyone says it is so easy,. please, i need ur help guys. any help would be much appreciated

Further Maths may be easy, but there is a lot of competition. If you make stupid mistakes in Further it can really cost you, cuz chances are someone else isn't. Plus, only 2 VCE maths can be in your top 4, so if I were you I would go for Methods, Spesh, and Uni Maths.
A lot of people on here do Uni Maths and say it's great fun, and really easy to get a High Distinction.

Firstly, if you do further, methods, spec and uni maths, only two can be in primary four and 3 can count towards your enter at all. (this is a general rule for doing too many subjects from one area, it applies to doing lots of LOTEs as well etc)

The general side of each argument is:
Doing further - High study score -> maximise enter
Not doing further - You'll probably enjoy yourself more.

If it helps, look at the past exams for Further: http://vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/studies/mathematics/further/exams.html
If you are interested in any of the topics that aren't taught in methods/spec (there are some.), you can probably independently learn them.

As you can probably tell, I lean towards not doing further :P
