yeah i was very happy with my mark.
but im really interested to see exactly what i got wrong on the exam just out of intersest
il probably get a statement of marks (thats for the actual mark/percentage isnt it?)

is there any way of actually getting to see your exam?

Congrats :]

The statement of marks is the one where you have to pay $8/$9 to see your actual mark out of 75..complete ripoff! And as for seeing your exam, again, you can, but you have to pay lol! I'm not sure when they're releasing them for viewing though, you'll have to ask/check.

Yeah I know...I think it's ridiculous! I'd love to know what the cutoff for A+ was though and exactly how high I managed...coz everyone kept saying how it would be higher this year, since the exam was easy. But my curiosity is still NOT going to make me pay VCAA lol!

Very happy with my results.
I'm still debating about getting the mark thing...but I'd rather save my $8/9

For those of you who want to know the cut off marks; they can be found here for ALL mid year 2008 subjects. http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/statistics/2008/midyear/midyear.html In biology an A+ was 63 and up out of 75. Enjoy!

Thanks for the link Jed. Wow 63 is a lower cutoff than I was expecting! Haha in that case I probably got 63, or 63.5 lmao

wow i really feel dumb... i got C+... i was really pissed cos i knew i was going to get a bad mark because of the heap of little mistakes i made but i didn't thik i would get that bad... then to make it worse, a girl who did really bad for her sacs n stuff n did like no work all semester got a B...

This is so crap i just want to go die in a hole. i wish i was smarter. Well done to everyone else who aced the exam.

Wow, I'm actually quite impressed with my score. I got a B and I was pretty sure I was going to get a D, had trouble answering heaps of questions and basically gave up halfway during the exam.

my friend said that he answered all the questions with great detail & confidence. but did not get a super good result.

do you think that if you write too much, VCAA will deduct marks if a certain bit of info does not make sense?

in other words, to get A+, did you answer the questions as simple as possible.

ie the stimulus quest with copper

I think its better to answer a question in the simplest way possible. I doubt they take marks off for going into lots of detail, but if you keep it simpler your less likely to make mistakes (ie put down something additional you think is true but might not be)

Definitely. And besides, putting too much detail into some answers sometimes leaves you without enough time to answer other questions properly, if at all...that's what happened to my friend's friend in the Bio exam. It's important to be concise - put just the right amount of information in; not too much, not too little. To do that successfully it's necessary to really practise throughout the semester, so you get a good feel for what's "just right".

Managed an A+, really happy with that. Bio is my 3/4 in year 11 and I did a LOT of revision for the exam coz I didn't wanna come first in my school for outcomes to only screw up the exam, probably gonna get a statement of marks for this (mainly because two of my friends also got A+, so we need to compare). Congrats to all of you who did as well as were hoping.

You need to pay for a statement, and they'll send it to you - you also need to pay to inspect your paper, which I'm pretty sure you can do either at your school or at VCAA's offices. I would talk to your year level coordinator, or whoever is responsible for that kind of thing...and you'll get to see the statement/inspect your paper very soon I think, as long as you arrange it.

what do you think the cut-off mark is for a 45>50? in both exams?

?/150?? out of 75 marks for each exam!

140/150 or higher?

Hey guys,
I got an A - and I have a couple of questions about it.
What marks on the 2 exams do you guys reckon are needed to get a 40 or more as the study score for biology?
I really want a 40. was my A good enough? or do you really need an A+ to get over 40?
Cheers.

most likely you will want a high A+ later

generally, the top 11% of state receives A+ on an exam, and the top 10% of state receives 40+ as SS.

so i still can get a 40, but it'll be hard? do SACS have a huge bearing on it?
Title: Re: Biology Mid-year results
Post by: lacoste on August 09, 2008, 05:32:13 pm
so is it impossible to get mid 40's with a high A & a high A+?

edit:: good cohort etc rule out any unnecessities
Title: Re: Biology Mid-year results
Post by: Mao on August 09, 2008, 05:41:04 pm
probably. total SACs contribute 34% to your SS, so if you want to have the average to receive 40+, you'd want an A+ ave. across all three GAs.

in terms of SACs, that is you want to rank in your cohort where your moderated SACs will be around A+ (i.e. ranked high enough so that the corresponding exam score would be A+)
Title: Re: Biology Mid-year results
Post by: lacoste on August 09, 2008, 05:44:41 pm
okay.
excuse the confustion. (asking for a friend) so i got lazy... anyways

i meant that if sac's were automatic straight A+

then exam 1: high A and exam 2: high A+.

is it then possible for a mid 40's?

How do they scale your sacs according to the exams? Like the whole 'first ranked basically gets the top exam mark as their sac mark', but what if you had two exams? Which exam would the sac be scaled up against?

This year in Biology I'm pretty sure only 9% got A+ on Exam 1 - but I'm not sure if that would have impact on anything.

The marks you need in total for a 40+ would change every year...your best bet would probably to find someone from last year who got 40+ and bought a Statement of Marks, and ask if they mind telling you what was needed last year, just as an indication. And Mao's right, a high A+ would probably get you there, but it depends on how high your A was :]
Title: Re: Biology Mid-year results
Post by: username on August 09, 2008, 06:03:08 pm
Does that mean it leaves room for a higher percentage to get a 40 ss?
Title: Re: Biology Mid-year results
Post by: JL_91 on August 09, 2008, 06:07:53 pm
No, I don't think it does - the 0-50 scale they use is consistent every year in terms of the percentages of people getting in a certain range of scores, e.g. __% will get 40+...someone correct me if I'm wrong though.
Title: Re: Biology Mid-year results
Post by: username on August 09, 2008, 06:09:41 pm
Oh okay, because I thought its standard that 10% get 40 or over, so if 9% get A+s, then I thought ppl with high As would make up the other 1% or something.

that would be the most reasonable assumption.

they would probably use an average of the two exams.

45 = top 2%
sorry to say but I think that A will make it very hard to achieve.

for those who did bio last year-
do you think exam 1 is generally easier or harder than exam 2?
i mean, on a whole if you did past papers ect.

do you get to actually look at your exam, if you pay.

How much did you pay?
If just $8, you got what you paid for. I forget how much inspection of scripts is but its a fair bit more.
That is best organised through your school anyway.
