Title: CRAZY latin scaling!
Post by: psychlaw on August 27, 2008, 07:32:05 pm
I was playing around with latin on daniels entercalc

and I was shocked to discover a 30 raw becomes 46

and a 24 raw becomes a 40... wow that is really high scaling

40 raw is a 52 and the highest score last year ... 47 goes to 54.4

does anyone here do latin, if you end up getting a study score your pretty much guaranteed a 40+ (they don't give out less then 20 in study scores so just get 24+)

The 47->54 isn't much higher than Specialist Maths, which is 47->53. Specialist Maths also has crazy scaling, there I said it.

But otherwise; yes, it's crazy.

It's interesting that Latin seems to have the same +5 scaling as other languages, considering that it's technically 'dead'. I thought the state government put that in just to encourage people to learn a language that they can actually kind of use beyond pope-ville. That said, I think I would have liked doing Latin and it is pretty useful (not really as a second language though).

When looking at the high scaling that Latin has compared to other languages, you need to take into account that it is mainly very wealthy, high achieving private schools that offer it.

not to mention awesome.
most academia use latin for their naming systems anyway.
it's really awesome to know the etymology of some random word.

If you do latin from what my teachers have told me you become better at english in terms of recognising words you dont understand and reading since some words from latin are modified in english.
e.g. monologue, mono-one logue-is like talk? So you wouldnt need to use the dictionary as much
ALSO NO ORAL EXAM SO UNFAIR COMPARED TO OTHER LANGUAGES!!!!!!!!

We have never had to be able to say anything in Latin - the syllabus is just so different to the other language eg.
You have to know 300 lines of latin intricately - literary devices, author purpose, the allusions that a word evokes, scansion, word order, metrical devices, sound effects, language choice - so it certainly goes beyond being able to translate Virgil's verse - basically think poetry analysis in a different language

Then you have to be able to understand around 700 lines of latin and be able to be given a passage and write a thematic style essay (a little different to an english essay- probably closest to classics) in 30 mins (from the Latin text)

As well as being able to translate real latin texts (ie stuff written over 2000 years ago) from latin into english - (hence know vocab, latin grammar etc)

they do give out less than 20 for a latin study score, my friend got 16 last year
i dont think that her score scaled 15/16 marks though, due to standard deviation, so it probably would have been around 20 in the end

Spesh scaled only by 8 last year? Does this mean that it could be similar this year?

Latin, Ancient Greek, Hebrew, French, Chinese Second Language and even German are the languages that have crazy scaling.

I read somewhere in The Age this year that Frankston High also offered it as they are a pretty old public school.  Can anyone confirm?  ryley?

I'm aware of a year 10 public school student doing 3/4 by Distance Ed this year

The only government schools that are offering it are Dandenong HS and University HS
