你好!
Chinese will very most likely be my 7th subject, because the background speakers pwn me in the listening, because it simply contains words I've never heard before, and I listen and I can tell 'that is the answer right there but I have no idea what it means and can't find it in the dictionary from educatedly guessing the pinyin.'
You're lucky next year they will severly cut down it =P

Like for my practise exam we did a month ago, 23/30, 30/30, 15/15, it pwns me :(
Haven't really touched chinese since then xD

你好 :)

我是在北京生的,六岁来到澳大利亚。我的男朋友是香港人,所以他也说广东话 :P 听的好怪,一点儿都不象普通话!

呵呵你写的大部分我都看不懂,应为我不认繁体字典  我没有学汉语; 我在学德语,真难呀! 应为我说普通话说的还可以,但是写的非常差 :( 我的口语考试也考的不太好,太紧张了,说的乱了 :(

hehe Mel did you understand that or do I completely suck at speaking proper chinese .... cos I think a lot of that was slang :P

She was writing traditional chinese characters ... I couldn't understand half of them :(

Also when we learn proper chinese we don't tend to learn characteristics of spoken language (yay for english language!) like 呵呵 :P

sorry if my chinese is bad . lol . i have a tendency to mix it up with cantonese alot -_- like all the ending particles .. i don't think mandarin people actually use them ? i'm not sure . hehe .

那。。你们上那所学校啊?呵呵 。。 我有一位朋友在macrob 学德语。。她觉得德语蛮有意思的 。。我的口语考试啊。。也是耶! 那时候我真的超紧张 :( 我不要我的vce成绩啦。。哈哈:( 那。。你懂不懂广东话啊?

It's like...

I'm screwed for Chinese. Just give me a 35 and leave it at that, eh VCAA?

I'm one of those bums that get the answer straight off the tape, hehe.

But my essay writing is shocking, so you can make up marks there.

How did your oral go ? Mine went horrid . I was stuttering .. and it was quite funny actually .. because I ran into my examiner a few days later . LOL and I found out my Taiwanese friend is her niece and she's also my friend's teacher .. I'm still too scared to ask her how I went . Lol she probably forgot anyways .. I doubt I left a good impression . Lol .

well i was an idiot to say that i had previously learnt french .. they suddenly took that as a conversation topic and asked me "fa yu gen han yu you shen me qu bie?" and i was like ..err.."ni bu yao yong han zi xue fa yu" and ..... ackward silences . there were so many ackward silences ! and then for my detailed study they said "wang zi cheng long shi shen me yi si" and then i answered it with "wang zi cheng long shi fu mu xi wang hai zi jiang lai hui you chu xi.." and then they looked like they were waiting for more .. so i was like ummmm.....-___-;; ! and then they asked me opinion questions about my detailed study .. not even any questions to actually do with the information i studied ..

but my friend .. she was worse i guess .. cos she just moved from singapore last year .. and she somehow (i don't know how) managed to get into chinese sl beginners .. and in the oral .. they asked her .. "how long have you been learning chinese" lol and she answered "more than 10 years" lol and it was liek .. ackward silence .. and then apparantly they full on changed the level of difficulty for the questions to try and trick her into saying that mandarin is her first language .. -_-

but are you mandarin or cantonese or ?? hehe ..

my oral accessors kept giggling in a very disturbing manner O.O
Title: Chinese SL
Post by: ninwa on November 16, 2007, 03:07:37 pm
lol, my oral was pretty awkward too .... the lady that came to the door to collect me looked a bit caught out that I'm Chinese :P but then I walked in and the other examiner looked Japanese or something ...... ?!

and my examiners kept nodding at every little thing I said ... it felt pretty weird. The first question was Beschreiben Sie Ihre Familie (describe your family) and all I'd said was "Es gibt vier Leute" (there are 4 people) and they were already smiling and nodding and going "OHHHHHH" like I'd said the most interesting thing in the world =\

I wish I didn't drop Chinese lol. German listening comprehension pwns me to the max :(

oh and .... 我弹钢琴 :) 我的考试考的真差 :( 英文是我最好的课, 但是不知道为什么, 当天写坏了, biology & chemistry 也考的不太好 :( 我本来希望得九十九以上, 但是先在不可能了

I've studied Chinese for ~8 years. But I suck so much I've had to repeat grades, hence my French(since prep) progressed past it. LOL

*shame*

(plus I get owned by the background speakers too)

when is ur german written exam ?? good luck ! :)

well i regret dropping french and not picking up japanese . i love languages .. and not to mention the fact that they are all scaled up . 3 languages ~ gees . if only i had put more thought into my subject choices -_- lol

i am getting owned by so many people . like all my chinese friends (who speak mandarin at home) are in sl beginners ! -___- gah damnit i need a 40 ! lol . to save my vce from what it's become :(

which schools do you go to ?

and also . how do you guys (the ones learning atm) practice chinese ? like .. do you write alot of essays and stuff to practice ? or just do practice comprehension questions ? i hate the fact that i know cantonese because it screws up my mandarin bad :( in a way it's an advantage cos there are still similarities but cantonese is very colloquial :( sooo it doesn't help much with proper mandarin sentence structures and grammar -_-

wait, toothpick, aren't you chinese? :?

German written is next Tuesday .... I think. I am gonna get absolutely killed by the listening bit. Writing I can do fine, just the listening .... :(

I dunno bout chinese but for german I just write practice essays. My teacher also gave me heaps of listening tapes to practice, and also a booklet of reading comprehension practices. I've been neglecting german for international studies tho ..... I think I can wing german but IS I actually need to study for :P

Title: Chinese SL
Post by: lyn123 on November 16, 2007, 03:25:22 pm
yeah i reckon i can wing chinese too . lol but i really need the good mark . lol because i had like 2 friends that are both from hongkong, super good at mandarin (started learning when they were like 5 or something) and one got 32 and one got 36 .. so that kinda scares me alot ! because i know my level is nowhere near as good as theres ! lol so far i'm just doing a hsk chinese proficiency tests . but it's abit too simple -_- hmm i have a habit of when writing essays i manage to write alot of "fei hua" lol and lose the actual point -_- and apparantly word limits are very important . which means i really need to cut the crap :( thank goodness i have just under a week to still practice chinese :D

which school do you go to ?

wo ye hen tao yan vce de kao shi :(

大家好,原来这里有这么多中国人,我才刚刚发现!
i finished my chinese sla last year, although i was very confident, even my teacher said 45+ wasn't a problem for me, i only received 39 study score, which was very dissapointing >.< , my chinese is much better than my english, although i've been here for 7 years.

from my experience, the chinese SLA exam was very flawed. the weighing is completely unreasonable, an essay which takes 50mins to write have the same amount of marks to a PART of reading and responding question, which was filling in some missing information in a resume.
you can see it from the front cover of last years paper, the essay with suggested time 50/120 mins worth only 15/75 marks.
the person wrote the exam is such an idiot.
theres more such as question 14 of last years paper, absurd question to ask, doesn't test chinese knowledge at all.

and, an independent chinese school, the chinese culture school mont albert, they cheat the exams, their principle is the one who wrote the chinese exams, and its really unfair for other schools. you having people with really shit chinese getting high marks from that school, cos theres too much flaws in the system.

about whether the principle wrote the exam, im not 100%sure cos i heard from other people, but if you look at the vce high scorer in the herald sun last year, 70-80% of people who achieved study score of 40+ are from mont albert cultures school.

yeah ! snow is great ! :) it was real snow ! lol i remember i went to this palace .. i forgot where .. and it had like a lake of ice yeah .. and this poor man .. he was like . poking his foot to see if he could step on it without the ice breaking . and he ended up falling in o.o ! my cousin had to quickly grab him back out ! poor man lost so much face .. didn't even talk for the rest of the tour ..

yeah my friend said it's impossible for the principal to write it cos apparantly the exam writer is not meant to be in contact with any students or anything to do with the candidates at all . or something ? :) maybe it was to do with the examiner marking the papers ? cos aren't schools marked in batches ?!

maybe they're just good at chinese?

trinity grammar (I think) has the chief assessor for English ... I'll be interested to see how many of them get 40+ ... but I doubt there'll be much correlation between having an assessor and getting good marks. We have 2 or 3 teachers who are English assessors and you don't see our school getting a billion 50s in English :P

about whether the principle wrote the exam, im not 100%sure cos i heard from other people, but if you look at the vce high scorer in the herald sun last year, 70-80% of people who achieved study score of 40+ are from mont albert cultures school.

and yeah i was in beijing this jan too, i love snow

maybe they're just good at chinese?

trinity grammar (I think) has the chief assessor for English ... I'll be interested to see how many of them get 40+ ... but I doubt there'll be much correlation between having an assessor and getting good marks. We have 2 or 3 teachers who are English assessors and you don't see our school getting a billion 50s in English :P

actually theres people who are really bad at chinese, even having trouble speaking getting very good marks, so i dont think they are just good at chinese, but anyway you guys still have to try your best for the exam

lol i know, vce system is pretty unfair, i know alot of people who are doing both chinese SLA, and ESL.
and some malaysian who are very good at english, still can do esl, as vcaa doesnt count malaysia as english speaking country, but they do speak good english

unlike english, in chinese exam only have a very small part on essay writing, so don't have to worry too much, i found the listening section quite challenging, they spoke quite fast and wasn't enough time.

and i heard from my friend who did chinese first language, the listening was very unfair cos the person spoke very fast and used very very strong beijing accent, and used slang terms such as 皇城根, people not from beijing couldn't even understand it.

I pretty much don't do spoken :) only learn proper chinese

The one thing I do know is you can shorten 的时候 to 时 because sometimes that happens in the listening
Oh and also, after someone said '我有了something(like some object)', our teacher told us that the first three words in that by themselves mean something else. so then for the next week we were informing everyone 我们都有了。:D

Think they're the only things I know that aren't standard standard chinese

汉语朋友们!听CD以后,我有一些问题。

第一:?广东话?有什么意思?这是?上海话?,?北京话?等一样,还是有其他的意思?
第二:?我明年要kao大学?。什么kao? 是考式的考吗?有什么意思?

谢谢你们!

Also in one of the listenings I was doing just then, they wanted to go to the beach, and the guy was navigating, and the girl wanted to look at the map, so she did, and she said they had been walking west all this time from where they started from, when the beach was to the east xD

广东话 is Cantonese, the dialect of Chinese spoken in and around Guangzhou province China, so it is similar to what ?上海话?,?北京话? means.
kao大学 is 考大学, it means taking the exams which gets people into universities. 我明年要考大学means "i'm doing VCE year 12 next year", its NOT going to uni next year, that would be我明年要上大学. therefore the person speaking is currently in year11.

also when asking what something means, its"是什么意思?" rather than 有什么意思.  :D  :D

you say加油to someone when they are gonna do something challenging and 加油is to pump them up, it substitutes saying goodluck to someone.
for example u say to some1 good luck for the exams, would be考试加油.
how ever 加油does not mean good luck, it means like make an extra effort, or get pumped up, and it is a very frequently and commonly used word. In sport events we shout 加油 which means go.

i was in SLA, but my chinese is like first language, my teacher said i was lucky to be in SLA, i should go to FL, but i just missed half year in doing esl>.<

I only started learning chinese in year 7.
If I'd had known a few years ago that how well I'd do in vce chinese does not correlate to where I stand within my school, then I probably would have dropped it long ago.
Like it's probably going to be my 7th subject, and to do any better either I'd have to bomb out on another subject this year (which I didn't), or it'd have to beat I think ~46.8 after scaling xD There's no way I can get high 30s raw xD

.... I think you could :?

Just because you're competing against native speakers doesn't necessarily mean you're gonna get pushed down by them .... cos if they're anything like me, they'd be used to speaking the more slangy or casual kind of Chinese which isn't gonna get them marks in the exam .... like I've seen the work you guys do and I'd be like, hey, I never knew that's how you're meant to say blah blah blah

Don't give up! 加油 indeed ^^

But they don't miss 1/4 of the listening section, because they don't have the problem of hearing where the answer is, but having no idea what it means and can't find it in the dictionary. eg Q: what do they want to bring, I hear "wo men yao dai lai agjhrgkjsdgjk" and I feel like headdesking in frustration

Anyway, this is a nice place to ask questions :)
1. Context is person wanting to buy presents for people when he goes to china. One of the things he is going to bring I heard as 'dai shi ping'. In dictionary I found 'dai shu' = kangaroo which is v aussie, but I can't find the last character. I don't think he'd be bringing a live kangaroo over =/
2. Same passage. A place where you can buy things. 'mian shui jian'. Dictionary absolutely no help on this one
3. What is a 'lu xing dai' Something to do with traveling I assume
4. How do you write a) Xi ni, b) Xin xi lan (nz). I've discovered my dictionary doesn't have places in it and I don't think I will try writing them in somewhere =/
In that one, there were other things I didn't hear at all, not even when I cheated and played the passage a few more times XD

Maybe I'm not that bad. I've included tones.

1. Dai shi ping means bring ten bottles of something. (4th tone, 2nd tone, 2nd tone)
2. Mian shui (3rd tone then 4th tone) means No-tax, or duty-free. So a "mian shui jian" I would assume refers to a duty-free shop at an airport, which should make sense considering he's going to China.
3. "lu xing dai" is means luggage (3rd dot tone, 2nd tone, 4th tone)
4. "Xi Ni" means Sydney. It's 悉尼。 "Xin Xi Lan" is 新西兰, I think.

thank you guys :*
I'll still put in effort and stuff, and like tomorrow/day after go through and learn how to write more characters off the top of my head, random good phrases etc.
the whole thing does feel a bit futile though. After 6 years I suddenly can't learn much more overnight. But I should get into a chinese mode, and stop making silly mistakes. Like yesterday I wrote 唱when I meant 喝cos they're similar, and only realised when I was doing a different paper when that character came up again xD

Just have to hope the listening section isn't full of unfamiliar vocab I guess =/

YESSS ! HOW DOABLE WAS THAT EXAM ! omg . i was like wowwww ! lol. but the reading and responding in chinese killed me . i waffled on like crazy . and i lost a mark cos in the why did the man recommend the airlines i wrote "a) it was cheap for china airlines b) shorter flight time compared to japan airlines c) 15% discount for the child" BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY SUPPOSED TO BE 25% discount ! O.O and also .. what did you write for "why did the custome choose australia airlines?" lolol.. that one was abit weird .. and i didnt know that you could just take answers out from the text word for word ! so i spent AGESSS writing my own answers -_- sounds all mixed up .. messy handwriting -_- andd i did the beach one also ! :) it was alright . lol i spelt two characters wrong -_- 'fan zheng" i wrote the wrong two characters .. so i guess another mark taken off there ? lol i dont know if my 43 raw is possible anymore .. my chinese replies weren't that great :( all mixed up and muddled with messy writing -____- oh and what did you write about the features of chinese sms? lol !

oh crap I forgot about the 25% off thing, I just said it was cheaper :K and that the shorter flight was suitable for kids
I said they chose australia one because that went directly to beijing. i think.

The sms thing I was mainly copying sentences from the passage. A few of them I reworded, but mostly it looked like it was copy and paste =/

cara, you're right about that.

I don't know about the 25% off thing. I didn't write that, because it wasn't directly related. We don't know the old pricing for Australia Airlines, so I believe that the 25% off is incorrect. It is just there to help you work out how many people are going (2 adults 1 child).

I dont think it was *directly* related, but it might have been good to chuck in that kids tickets were 75% the price, just to show off you understand it.

I think I filled up the lines to each question, and then proceeded to stop thinking :( stupid headaches

yeah well i've finished yr 12 this yr anyway. if only i went to a school that taught it also. that would have helped me to make the decision to choose to do a language lol. our school only offers italian and even though 'apparently' i was good at it when we did it from yr 7-9...it's like...i'm chinese, who am i going to talk to in italian?? anywho...learning chinese would have really benefitted me lol
