Have you received your results back?
I am still anxiously waiting my letter
-

Yes. I was nominated.
Nope, should be here soon though.
-
theres nuthing special about this program apart from the food they offer you on social events and open days.
i guess meeting new people is great and it looks good on your resume, but if you don't get it, don't worry about it.
but its really beneficial for rural students. they get $$$ if they choose to move down to Melbourne to live.
-
yeah i was told that the 2008 intake was at the start of the year
-
All student applications must be submitted by close of business on Friday 26 October 2007.
I don't think my school nominated anyone =S
-
yeah i was told that the 2008 intake was at the start of the year
That's a good idea, by the time they got this years lot sorted out we didn't really have any time to take advantage of whatever being a KLD'er encompasses.
Hopefully 1st year uni will give us more of an opportunity to 'undertake leadership programs' like they said we would.
Or something like that.
The lapel pin they sent us was a nice touch. :)
-
our school nominated a few, but that was a week before the due date (last month), so...
dont that thing come back around the same time as enhancement programs? they assess u on ur reports or something?
btw how many scholarships do they normally approve per yr level? this year my school got 2 in, and we nominated 5 in the oncoming year, so...
lol good luck all

yep i remember my teacher gave them our study scores for the 3/4's we did in year 11, and they might see your year 11 report also. Alot of the people I talked to said there was 1 or 2 people from their school chosen. One girl said their was 3 from her school. I doubt they'd pick all 5, but I think they say they pick at least 1. So if you were the only one nominated your guaranteed to get in haha

i have little confidence in teachers being able to select objectively

i have little confidence in teachers being able to select objectively
He has been a victim of teacher selection. Further Maths prize went to some guy who ended up not getting 50, brendan gets 50.
Haha, why would you choose the skip over the Asian, seriously? (j/k)
-
i have little confidence in teachers being able to select objectively
well the teachers select, and then you have to complete this application form
-
the whole program is a marketing ploy. a girl at school got it and her mailbox is constantly full of unimelb propaganda.
anyway i asked my career's counsellor about it and she said it was all about marketing. see, universities aren't allowed to get names of students to send them things normally, but if they brand it as a "scholarship program" then it is legit. so basically unimelb are just getting the names and addresses of the state's top students to get them into the new generation courses...
*moving this to university subforum*

yeah we all know it's just to advertise their new generation courses, but if I get $2500 to relocate and $2500 to study abroad (although I think most people are eligible for that anyway) I don't really care
-
lol yeh.. four guys from my school got it.. freakish i know
-
the KLD thing is only even half useful if you plan on going to their uni. at my school, i think what they did was ask the all-round top 5 students in our yr to apply - two of the others and i ended up going ahead with it. but i reckon it's pretty pointless..i agree, it's only an excuse for ads
-
I want to have UoM's babies. :p
-
I want to have UoM's babies. :p
. . . This guy's serious.
-
Hey. I was just wondering, has anyone got their results back?
On the Umelb website it says 'Mid-November' yet it is the 21st today and nothing has yet to arrive in the mail.
-
so do we get notified if we didn't get it?
-
apparently yes
-
yeah you do
-
I was nominated for it at my school. I called up the head of the program on the 21st and asked when we'll find out because they said mid november. she said the applications are being processed and we'll find out in 2 weeks approx.
-
wait, what?!!
already results are coming back before VCAA releases the results?
*wonders* i havent heard anything, is that good or bad news?
what's worse, my teachers(careers advisers) are asking me whether i should have heard anything?!!!
bloody hell, damn my school's new and noobish...
-
its got nothing to do with vce results or anything. they choose people from yr 10 and 11 so it cant be. the site said mid november but results are coming early december.
-

I'm not sure if it will be different this year, considering last year (well this year but you know what I mean) we didn't apply until during the year, but I know for us they saw our reports and our careers teacher also gave them our study scores for any 3/4's we'd already done. Obviously if they are selecting this early they may not know your study scores, but they will at least see reports
-
Nup, they're not looking at reports or anything. They're bludgers this year. =)
-
Yeh, thanks for the replies.
At least now I know why I have been waiting 2 weeks and haven't got the results back.
-
Nup, they're not looking at reports or anything. They're bludgers this year. =)
oh that is lazy!
I guess they get a good idea from all that shit you have to fill out on the application form anyway
-
Maybe in a few years time Melb Uni will get their act together and make this program have better advantages for the people involved
-
I was the only one who applied from my school. So I got in, lol. I don't know if anyone is applying this year. The program is okay, really. I'm sure a great deal of it is promotions, but I really don't care if they send "propaganda" to my house. If nothing else, it looks pretty damn good on my CV and it could potentially lead to other opportunities as well, especially if I actually go to Melbourne and do their leadership activities. Plus, I didn't have to wait in a huge line for a sausage on Open Day, which is always a positive.
-
haha yeah eriny i thought the same. They obviously just want to promote their melbourne model, but if we benefit, who cares??
-

Yup. Meh.
-
Maybe in a few years time Melb Uni will get their act together and make this program have better advantages for the people involved
amen to that
-
What can you ask of them? What do you want of the university?
We had like 25 applicants from our school, including me. I didn't get in, but what can I do? The competition is simply too high to allow everyone in.
I think it's well aimed. If you bother to apply, you care. It's simple as that. They don't need to bribe people to join the program.
-
what are you all on about?, don't you know that you are offered a commonwealth suported place of your choice with an enter of 90 (provided you attend an under-represented school) or 95 even if you don't attend an under-represented school. That's awesome, imo, easier to get into the most prestigous university in Melbourne, no need for a rediculously high enter to get into law (99) etc...
-
yea, but remember you can no longer get into law at UoM at undergrad level anyway
so the only places you can get are those 6 "melbourne model" places. like arts, commerce, music, science, none of which require "ridiculously high" ENTERs anyway. e.g. I think arts only needs like 85?
I think the KLD program is really a waste of time with minimal benefits ... all these so called "benefits" like the CSP place of your choice thing are just things which sound nice but are really useless once you look at it properly
-
I think the KLD program is really a waste of time with minimal benefits
Oh well, the smaller the benefits, the fewer the applicants. It is in Melbourne University's interests to increase their benefits if they want more applicants for KLD, so that they can have a better range of applicants to choose from.
-
maybe not. many people will get sucked in by the promises and 'benefits' of being a KLD scholar which sound good, without really investigating enough to realise that they are useless. or maybe i'm just bitter cos I got nominated but didn't get chosen =p
apologies for the lack of grammar / sub-par english btw, im tired and cbf
-
Haha, well there isn't really much to lose I guess, so I wouldn't call it being 'sucked in.' It's not like you have to sit an entrance exam, so to the eyes of a student, the benefits outweigh the costs. I'm not exactly sure how entrance scores are going to work for Melbourne, so I'm not sure what this 90/95+ rule with the KLD actually entails.
-
it goes something like:
if youre a KLD scholar (god how posh does that sound?) as long as you get 95 you'll get a CSP place at the lovely prestigious UoM. 90 for 'disadvantaged' kids which i assume means rural kids etc. damn those lucky rural kids.
-
Haha. The thing I don't get is, how does it even benefit the university? By lowering the entrance score, don't you just open yourself up to crappy candidates that could otherwise be filled up with higher potential candidates?
-
there's a square in there
and a nerd as well
there are books to read
they struggle to breed
open wide
come inside
it's melbourne
fuck melbourne
=D
ahem. back on topic. well i think they're getting desperate cos so many ppl dont like the melb model and are all applying for monash instead. i read somewhere monash enrolments went up by 98% this year. this KLD thing is essentially a bribe
-

Because I'm from an "underrepresented" school, I only need a 90 to get in.
I think the point is to attract people with good leadership skills or who make other contributions to society and who work hard, who would do well in tertiary education but perhaps may not get the scores required to get into Melbourne. In that way, I think the rural students benefit most, especially since they're given an accommodation allowance.

Good post.
Whereas someone like me, doesn't get shit, because I come from Melbourne, and my school's not exactly under-represented (55% UoM attendance rate sigh)
I'm not fussed about not getting KLD, because I know my ENTER *should* be sufficient to get me into Commerce easily. But for others, it is useful in helping along those that would otherwise not make it in because of the stringent results.
I don't believe they need to bribe students, either. I was going to Melbourne regardless (unless the Force leaves me), so the $2,500 bonus is just icing on the cake. :D
-
commerce is like 95 clearly in, if you go to underrep school, your automatically in with a 90.
for arts, guaranteed is 85 but clearly in is more like 91, 92, once again, automatically in with 90.
all above= benefits
oh and btw, underrep schools aren't necessarily rural, like a third of the secondary schools in melb area are under represented at melbourne uni, but i think more.
-
i'm only going if i get the required enter for the university of melbourne, otherwise, what's the point?
-
i'm only going if i get the required enter for the university of melbourne, otherwise, what's the point?
What do you mean?
Hey what sort of a name is poiuyt06 anyway, was it a keyboard bash :D?
-
Yeh I know about the 90/95 thing and I am from a under reperesented school. I would have applied but I didnt even think about it and I dont even think anyone from our school applied or got chosen to apply or anything
-
i meant i'm not going to the celebration event thingy on the 20th for kwongers, and yes it was keyboard bashing
-
i'm only going if i get the required enter for the university of melbourne, otherwise, what's the point?
True, otherwise it'll just make you wonder what you're doing there XD
-
Ha ha, keyboard bashing ftw! It's amazing what sort of random shit you can come up with.

Q W E R T Y U I O P
Not very imaginative, haha.
I preferred Kopite's aodmjgnwpekignw from BoS.
-
that's retarded, how are you supposed to remember that?
-
wat's ftw? freak the walls?
-
i wouldn't actually call it keyboard bashing, in my case it's keyboard gliding
-
LOL! It means 'for the win'; something good or like 'keyboard bashing rulez!' I only eva use it on FSN, and rarely... I used 2 think it was wtf backwards XD
-
Haha. The thing I don't get is, how does it even benefit the university? By lowering the entrance score, don't you just open yourself up to crappy candidates that could otherwise be filled up with higher potential candidates?
Well when everyone was whinging about the melb model they were about to rant about how they are offering more scolarships than ever, and how they have even implemented a new scholarship program aimed to help rural students etc etc. Also it's good advertising for them. When we went to the KLD event, we were able to stay at one of the colleges the night before, then the next day we talked to melb students, went for a tour around the uni, and then had to sit through one of the melb model spiels. And then we get sent pamphlets etc.
-
...sigh that sounds greatly *interesting*..... grr
oh btw on the note of keyboard gliding, linkin park has an unreleased song "QWERTY" haha, LP Freakin' on The Wall~
and what count as "under-represented"? our school only had 86 yr12 this year (we're new school too, that's the first bunch), and next year about 150 for the second bunch (my bunch XD), of which about a dozen will get 40s in SS of any subject (SouthEast bogans all dumbasses, wat u expect?), would we count as under-represented?
...and does it take much time away from normal school classes?
-

I think 'under-represented' means that the percentage of students from a school who get into that uni is low. So if not many students from your school get into melb uni, you could be in luck. You can check on the melb uni website
edit: i just realised you said you were the first bunch, so I'm not sure how they will figure it out. I guess you must be under-represented because noone from your school has been to melb uni ?? :-\ yeah you'll have to check the website
-
i'm in the second bunch =D
our newly-graduates are all dumb-asses.... will be lucky if 2 get in any reputable universities... having said that...?
soz for being unclear...
-
Under-represented schools
-
awesome~~~ thanks
-
lol i do suppose this program does not really benefit us... but u get free entrance to the end of yr vce lectures i think? (cant rmb) oh wells... dun really care whether i get in anot now... but a bit nervous waiting for their reply =/
-
Yeah, you have access to free lectures. I went to the Psychology one. It wasn't bad and I was the only KLD scholar there so I got an entire pizza to take home and I ate it for lunch everyday for that week. *thumbs up*.
-
lol i do suppose this program does not really benefit us... but u get free entrance to the end of yr vce lectures i think? (cant rmb) oh wells... dun really care whether i get in anot now... but a bit nervous waiting for their reply =/
Yeah, you do. But they didn't run lectures for all the subjects. They didn't run any of mine; there was only bio, chem, psych and history revs. I'm not sure if they'll run the same subjects next year though.
-
Lol, my in perspective, this program is not really that flashy. lol, I mean srsly theres like 98% chance of success if you get over 95 ENTER and apply for a unimelb course w/o the program. lol.
Meh, the only benefit I see through this is that it'll look good on your CV ROFL.
-
i'll be looking forward to that pizza more than anything else, hehehe
*scholars are announced 2morrow, half scared...
-
lol did u mean u got the pizza when attending the lecture? n yea i dun do any of those subj as well >.<
-
I was actually given the pizza box, which I put in my bag and consumed it at a later date. Ordinarily they would give you the pizza after the lecture though. I also got free water :D
-

Yeah, wow like free water

don't forget the pop tops & those fruit chewies :D
-
oh yeah. That was the first time I had those fruit chewies since I was 8 or 9.
-
mmm, i have this really cool water bottle, the bottle says
"another bloody water"
LMAO
it is announced today.... =S
-
My girlfriend won this award from her school. She's a user on here too (saraime2003). :)
-
Good luck everyone! ^_^ Don't be nervous though, applexy's right - it doesn't do much more than look good on your CV, unless you're rural or under-represented. It's something nice to have, but it can't be counted on to get you where you want to go.
-
lol the free water and pizza is worth it
o_O"
Ooo, and the fruity chewy thingys xD
-

Another bloody water!!! LMAO
I read my friend's bottle during class and after I was like: I would so buy this even though it's just water. Haha. Illogical ey.
Since we unceremoniously (some say rudely) barged our way into the overcrowded bottled water market with a good-looking bottle, a smartarse name and a devil may care attitude, it has come to our attention that our competitors don’t like us.^ They think we are taking the piss. That we mock the overly flowery, exaggerated language and the poorly drawn waterfalls and diagrams of volcanos on their labels. They think that we are not taking serious aquatic science of bottled water…well, seriously.
So to quash any future smear campaign and rumour mongering they may come up with, we’re going to set the record straight right here. Smart Alec name – yes. Just another water – no.
First up our water is bloody good. Better than most. It comes from a spring, high in the Victorian alps, which is a bloody long drive from civilisation (see: pollution). The only farms in the area are organic which means no nasty pesticides or any of those other evil poisons end up in the water. In fact we deal with the rampant blackberry problem by setting our deer on them. It’s a tough gig for the deer but they seem to like it. And while we’re blowing our own trumpet independent Government approved laboratories have done tests and they reckon it’s lower in sodium than all other major brands on the Australian market. Did we say it tastes bloody good?
So there you go, Doubting Thomas competitors – cards on the table. Enjoy Another Bloody Water, everyone. And then when you’re done with that enjoy another Another Bloody Water. And so on.
*We don’t actually know if our competitors don’t like us. But being ‘competitors’ we’re pretty sure they don’t.
-
omg i got in- i'm a 'kwong lee dow young scholar! lol
i don't care how some say its useless, it's pretty damn exciting :)
i was expecting not to get in when i held the envelope- it was the "thin" letter.
-

argh i went to check the mail jz then n theres no letter in there =( hopefully it will come tmr. they did say that they will send out a letter regardless if they reject or accept u rite? another fren has also not received any letter n another got in lol
-
Congratulations elaine ^_^
I didn't mean it was useless, I simply meant a person shouldn't get too crushed if they didn't get it.
-
Congratulations elaine ^_^

yeah they have to notify you regardless of whether you get in or not.
-
I got the letter too. There's a "5" at the back of my envelope, now I'm curious as to what it means.
Congrats Elaine.
-
toothpick, does that mean ur application is successful too? congratz if so!
-
Yeah that's what I meant. Thanks!
I hope you get your letter soon, with a positive outcome too.
-
I got the confirmation letter as well, oh yeah....
even thinking about free water brings me joy...
congrats to elaine and toothpick, i guess i'll c u there!
-
haha thx toothpick! i hope i get it too ^^ but even if i dun, i dont mind that much, since the only real benefit i would get from it is the 90 ENTER CSP thing and the networking/other smart people I will meet =D
-
I got the letter too. It certainly boosts the ego and the lectures seem interesting. However its all just part of the propaganda machine. you can practically get into any new generation course with an enter of 95. majority of people wont utilize the relocation money and many wont use the overseas money and those who do will have to supplement it so its just a way to give us something 'prestigious' while really giving us nothing.
-
sigh i got the letter of rejection =( not gonna worry too much about it though, coz like i said, it doesn't give my that much benefits... n yeah, people nominated by their schools are predicted to achieve an ENTER of 95 or above anyway! congratz bebo~
-
nawww there there, just mean you're not gonna have to waste time at bloody lectures and u can concentrate better =D
while the rest of us enjoy *nothing* and *recruitment drive*...
-
and free water, you can't forget that!
-
I got the confirmation letter as well, oh yeah....
even thinking about free water brings me joy...
congrats to elaine and toothpick, i guess i'll c u there!
thanks :) congratulations to you and toothpick as well.
does anyone know if there was there a maximum number that could get in from each school?
-
each school could only nominate a maximum of 5 students... so i assume the absolute max would be 5? lol
-
I got it :)
-
Congrats ^_^
And yes, the max is 5. So far though, it seems we've only encountered a max of 4, both from my skool and haungers.
