Just out of curiosity, is it worth moving to Canberra to go to ANU? Canberra seems like a pretty boring place to me.
-
For me yes.
Canberra's not so bad and it's probably a good thing not to always have so many distractions around.
-
Depends on the person really. Personally, I'd prefer a place closer to home :], but some people might wanna go somewhere new or maybe the school offers something unique. I dunno, what do you wanna do?
-
It's not so much the moving part, it's just if I was going to move I'd want to go somewhere with a lot to do, good nightlife etc. Otherwise I'd just get really bored and depressed.

Just live on campus and night life will never be an issue at any university where ever it is =P

If you live in Canberra, you have to develop your skills of making your own fun. Fortunately, that's pretty easy when you're living with 300 of your closest acquaintances. Besides, civic has a lot of clubs/bars, a movie cinema and lots of shops (including Aldi for cheap chocolate!) and nice to dodgy restaurants. It's close to the lake which is good to walk around, it's also close to Dickson, which has a Safeway, and very very close to Braddon which has McDonalds (all these things are walking distance). It's also really easy to catch a bus elsewhere. Also, everyone at college has a ton of legally acquired movies and TV shows on their computers. Oh, and you'll also probably have to do work...
A major drawback is that everything closes pretty early compared to Melbourne and Sydney, except on Fridays (late night shopping).

Ok, thanks for that. I think I'd probably rather live in a big city with a lot going on but I'll keep that in mind :)
-
On that topic, do you still keep in contact with your old friends when you study interstate?
-
I have. Like most people who've finished high school, I have lost contact with some friends. However, several of my friends from high school and I did heaps of stuff over summer and usually arrange to do a few things each holiday. If you make an effort, then there isn't a problem (in my experience).
-
Thanks. Thinking about going ANU at the moment, but losing friends is my biggest fear in relation to it. ^_^
-
I keep up with some high school friends, but not many. I have much better friends at uni than compared to high school.
Oh, and the social life of Canberra may not be as awesome as Melbourne's but if you live at a college then you won't care, because your social life there will be a million times more active regardless.

Canberra's actually a pretty good place for pubs. $2 drinks at Uni pub n Academy make sure of that. Plus moose, bourban bar, n ICIS. The place can go off.
-
It's all about Thursday afternoon at Unibar. Pity I have class then :(
Phoenix on Monday nights is pretty awesome too, as is Bar 32 on Friday nights (i.e. Rev).
Mind you, I've barely been out to any of those this year (cut down on boozing up due to IB), but that'll change pretty soon...

In answer to the original question,
Hell yes.

Also, it's 17th uni in the world,
so it's probs worth it.
and like someone else said,
uni friends are better than high school ones.
-
Well I decided I'm not convinced, but thanks anyway. I might consider moving to Canberra at a later stage in my life, but I'd rather enjoy being young in Melbourne first. Also, I'm not worried about losing high school friends:P
