Title: Are we required to know...
Post by: username on September 29, 2008, 07:32:54 pm
Things like correlation, scatter diagrams, and mean and stuff like that?

We haven't covered it in class at all. :\

in the study design, the key knowledge for research methods includes the "collection and interpretation of data" and "statistical analysis"

what you said comes under that (i think) so yeah i'd say we have to know it.

Ew. :(

Have an idea of it... but scatter plots, and correlations were something that was from the previous study design so it would be unlikely that you'd get this kind of question (a pity, in my opinion). What you will find (in terms of "collection and interpretation of data") is a case study, and you will have to answer a few questions on the design of the experiment (including possible extravenous variables). "statistical analysis" refers to p-values.

Ooh thanks Glock.

Pity that it's not on the study design? Hardly.

Jubilation? Yes please.

you should know your mean, median, mode and graphs as they are descriptive statistics.

other than this, i doubt anything will come up regarding scatter plots, correlations etc.  saying this however, if youre aiming for the top mark, it would be handy to have a general idea about the concept..

do we have to know the different types of encoding? (semantic, visual and acoustic)

I've not seen those show up on an exam, but it only takes about five seconds to learn them.

theyve come up in one trial exam i've done, but its pretty easy to get your head around it.

basically,
acoustic encoding: stored in terms of sound (eg the numbers 3423 sounded as "three four two three")
visual encoding: stored pictorially, or in terms of its appearance (eg the actual pictorial representation of the numbers 3243)
semantic encoding: stored in terms of its meaning (eg remembering 3423 because its your postcode)

someone correct me if im wrong

that's a good example to use, thank you. :)

isnt it structural, phonemic and semantic encoding?

yeah, they have different names in different text books. i've also seen them referred to as shallow (visual) processing, moderate (phonetic) processing, and deep (semantic) processing.

So how is everyone approaching their study for Psych in this last week of swatvac?

I'm just trying to get as many practice exams done as possible...not sure if it's the most effective method at the moment :\

- Read over your notes
- Do practice questions
- Relax

thats pretty much what you need to do.

I agree with Glockmeister.

Lulu, i don't think doing practice exams over and over again is something that will help you immensly. Sure, do 4 or 5, but i wouldn't be going any higher - that's my opinion though.

This week i am just going to read over my notes, focus more on the areas that need clarification and do 3-4 practice exams. It's not until next thursday so my study is going into maths and english a bit more, but i am still focusing on psych a lot.

also, if you're looking for harmless, fun psych revision, start asking questions to one another. Maybe incorporate it into a game or something.

i like this idea of a psych revision questions game maybe we could make one on the forum?

ive done over 20 exams but thats probably because im yr 11 and have lots of time on my hands but i think ill read over some notes tomorrow and the next and i should be fine for the exam.
I hear that the exams that have taken place so far have all been hard like english spesh and biology, could it be a running trend for all vcaa exams:O

You want a difficult exam if you know your stuff, given that grades are distributed by percentiles and less people will do very well if the exam is difficult. If you don't know your stuff, then you want an easy exam.

i guess i know my stuff just not as confident as i should be
so i just want an exam that will get me my 45 score:P
