Hey guys,
This is sorta a blog of my night. :) Prav wants to know how tonight went but I guess I'll just write it here and save myself writing it twice.
This presentation night by the way was for the Australian Business Studies and Economics Competition for 2008 which I was the State winner for in the Business Studies section.
So anyway, the night started by arriving at PricewaterhouseCoopers at 2 Southbank blvrd (Freshwater place) where we spoke to a lovely receptionist named Gemma. She gave me and my parents our security passes and we proceeded to pass through these futuristic style glass security door thingos. Was really cool. We waited in the lobby for a while and then went up to the 19th floor where the presentation was held (whoa what a view!) We started the night with drinks as everyone got settled into their seats.
Alisa (who seemed to be the main organiser of the night) commenced proceedings and started the presentation. Then some other guy gave a little speech about the competition and how difficult it was to have been chosen to receive an award. The top 2% in the state were present at the night.
Then the $50 awards were given out (the lower end high distinctions). Then this really inspirational guy who was head of the economics department for Sydney-Melbourne operations gave a speech about economics and PwC which was super cool!!! Really inspired me to aspire to work in a job like he does. He was involved in the audit for the 2018 FIFA World Cup bid for Australia (super cool!!!)
Then more awards were given out and then some young asian guy who is a Prof. in Economics at UNSW (Australian School of Economics or something like that) spoke about the great careers in economics and how demand has increased for eco graduates while supply has hardly changed in the past 10 years, thus rising average wages for economics graduates
Then came my presentation :)
They called my name and the audience went spastic lol (possibly because I was the last person to receive an award). I received a super cool glass trophy, a cool certificate and $250 cash :) Three of my teachers (Economics, Accounting and Business Management) were in attendance and were being quite loud when I went and received my award. I then had my picture taken with the Professor from UNSW. Then light refreshments (ie. finger food lol) was provided by the waiters (oh I forgot, they had like a waiter for every 5 people lol). I was talking to my teacher and parents when the head of economics from PwC came up to me and introduced himself and congratulated me . ZOMG I WAS SOOOO EXCITED haha. He spoke to me about a career in economics and said I should seriously consider it (WHICH I AM :) ) and then we spoke about the WC bid for a little bit and he also told me that they take in about 3-4 graduates each year for the economics division and this year they were all from Monash :)
He left a great impression on me and left me feeling in my mind, no doubt that economics is a career I really want to consider. (I don't really care that it was a massive marketing night for PwC because I wanted information like this!!! It makes the future seem so much more exciting!)
I then spoke to Alisa who is in some role of recruitment. I am pretty sure she works with some other lady in charge of student recrutment (including year 12 and Uni graduates). She was really friendly and helpful and suggested I apply for the PwC "Preview" or "Summer Vacation" programs in a year or two's time which would be a fantastic start into a career at PwC. She also told me to call her if I had any queries and urged me to apply later on.
Ohh and they said the major thing for PwC is TEAMWORK :) (even though all other things they seek in an employee are also essential).
GOD I LOVE PwC

OMG YOU AND PRAV CAN HAVE CITI VS. PWC GANG WARS
-
Congratulations man! I remember getting this kind of commendation when I won 3rd in my Italian poetry recitation competition. I always get 3rd in everything... :(
I reckon this is excellent to put in your portfolio, and Uni's would be especially interested.
Well done again. :)

CONGRATULATIONS!!

-
lol Citi > PwC anyday though xD
;)
-
thanks everyone for congrads :)
im not gettin into any citi V PwC wars.. i aint a fanboy. just impressed
-
Ha, nah. PwC is sick organisation, especially with it's "futuristic style glass security door thingos." COOL.
I like financial services corporations, so there's no battle.
But man, you deserve it costa! You should seriously call or arrange a discussion with the Unimelb commerce selection panel. Seeing as you got the highest award possible, it would give you a great advantage ;)
-
damn right you are impressed =P
you'll probably be the richest graduate of us all :)
-
Meh. I'm over worrying about Uni and where I go. I'm just focusing on my ENTER. If I get a good enough mark, I'll see what avenues to pursue, although I generally don't think I'd be successful.
Ah well
-
damn right you are impressed =P
you'll probably be the richest graduate of us all :)
Lol. I want job satisfaction and incentives (not just financial) in whatever career I pursue. Being rich is sorta an added bonus haha... maybe one day :) And I'll buy VN off enwiabe, invest in a professional layout, upgrade the notes uploading system and give random VCE resource giveaways every day :)
-
Still impressed with the effort!
Excellent work. Was the receptionist hot ROFLCOPTER.
you'll probably be the richest graduate of us all
Nah, no way. I think Brendan will, he has great knowledge about everything. =)

Organisational behaviour sounds like pure VCE Business Management, except with a pretentious name rofl. I don't know, that's just my opinion :P

I know the people in the thrid picture! :P

Lol, i really liked my teachers in year 12. I find when you work WITH your teachers instead of trying to fight them you grow a real connection and that connection allows you to get the most out of your studies.

Costa - not sure yet...no-one's given me any details.
But do know I'll be working full-time, most likely in either of Advisory or Assurance. This is my 2nd IBL placement.
-
Out of curiousity- did you consider applying for a Cadetship at PwC?
-
Now that I'm here, I have to agree with the killer view - I'm working on the 22nd floor. And yeah, I'm working in Advisory.
Never did consider doing a cadetship though, never really had an interest in accounting.

What year are you in excal for uni?
when do cadetships/interns usually come in for uni students? its not possible for first years?

3rd year, but I'm doing an IBL (Co-op as they call it) placement.
Cadetships work kinda different, I can't quite tell you how they work because I don't really know. All I know is that you apply for it during Year 12.

Wow that sounds awesome Excal. What's the organisation like?
What does advisory entail btw?

Apparently, I can have visitors after hours (I have 24 hour access). So, maybe.

Very different from Monash...very different. It's pretty hard to describe (especially seeing as I've only been there for three days).
I'm in Performance Improvement Consulting - Technology and Projects, so basically the work I do revolves around services we give to client companies on how to improve their business processes and procedures with a technology focus. I think, anyway (again, 3 days!)

hahahahha MAD!!!
I'm bloody jealous!!!
When you say 'differnt', differnt in good or bad way? Surely you'd have an opinion on the place. Would you take a job there if you could get one?

What's after hrs there

Eh, they're not THAT futuristic are they? But yeah, they're still there.
My office actually faces to the south-east - so I can see the South Yarra/St.Kilda/Toorak area. If only there weren't so many high-rises, I could see the bay from here too - instead I have a very small bit of ocean in the view.

Essentially, you apply for a cadetship in year 12- and you get to do full time work and part time uni from year 1. It's a great program.

It's like ~$13 p/h, I remember I went to an information evening back in April regarding these and one of the Cadets at KPMG told me that he got like $12.80 per hour or thereabouts, but you get other benefits like education allowance etc..
-
Although I'm fairly sure you are locked into a contract with them after uni, which isn't so bad except apparently the pay stays shocking for many years (much lower than other graduates). (information from BoS btw)
-
Yep you're locked in to a contract. If you leave them then you have to pay them back the costs they incurred to pay for some of your uni or whatever the deal is.
