Title: 2008 mav exam
Post by: ausyid on October 11, 2008, 05:37:12 pm
Anyone else think this is just too hard?

From Captain on Mao's account:

I haven't done the MAV 08 for methods, but I did the 07 and got 100%.  What did you find difficult about the 08 paper?

Pretty much everything except probability, although I never find probability to be too hard.

We did this as a trial exam. This exam is way harder than previous MAV exams. Especially that extended response question with something about languages, that was a killer. But overall, it's not too bad.

I think the MAV paper was more 'tricky' than it was 'hard'. A lot of people in my class got caught out by the wording of the questions and accuracy of answers, especially in extended response question 2. I thought the multiple choice was fairly hard though

Yeah, true. But if you're doing this under exam conditions, the "tricky" questions turn into "hard" questions and as you progress through the exam, you lose confidence and you likely interpret the extended questions incorrectly, making the exam difficult.

the language one wasn't so difficult. i totally stuffed up probability as i had no calculator with the proper apps (lolololol) but yeah the multiple choice was clearly the most difficult

WOW! So you couldn't do most of the probality questions?

Or I could put mine up if you want. However... my paper is hard copy and it's got scribblings and working and ticks and etc.
I was thinking of uploading before but thought it might not be so useful if it's got the answers already
So Y/N?

and then apple can get a refund of 300 bucks and invest in citi shares in the hope that theyll go thru the roof but on 30 October citi will go broke (for real), the day b4 english exam and apple will get sad and fail at english :(

:P

and put it in a new thread so A) people who havent done it don't accidently view it and see answers and B) we can have the solutions in one nice thread ahha

Is this exam harder than NEAP 2008 Trial Exam 2, for those who has done both?

Slightly harder.

lol I didn't know people had it.

MAV have great exams. I think they are very similar to the VCAA ones, as they are a math association. Because of this, the writing panel of MAV trials may consist of past examiners or highly respectable math teachers.

So I think it's a good investment. It'll get me closer to the 40!!! WEE

definitely not the 2008 MAV ones.

okay, at a glance: there are some ridiculously tricky questions that requires a very high level of understanding. Some questions are just worded too difficultly only for the purpose to pwn nubz.

I can genuinely see many people from my school scoring zero on that paper, it appears each question has a twist.

It's a great revision paper, but not something to sit as an exam to prepare for the actual exam. VCAA is nowhere near this difficult.

if you did well on that paper, you are on the way to achieve great scores in MM and spec.

So I think it's a good investment.

Did you really pay $300 for it?

what the hell? $300 for 2 exams?

Last I heard, exam prices ranged from $8 to $15.... let alone $150?

ON ANOTHER GLANCE
this is ridiculous.

double angle formula, derivative of a modulus function... WHAT

oh wait, I see. this is a CAS exam.
normal MM people would get quite a shock to see the amount of matrices questions in there.

also, that languages question seem like sweet sweet revenge from a past EL student. ha

Well they do make some quality exams. For example, the Neap study guides ($20) have 3 exams at the back of the book and are nothing like these ones. And some schools may use these trial exams as a SAC.. ::)
