how do they calculate the rankings?
Different ranking systems do it differently, but generally its about the research the academic staff do, how often they're cited, that kind of thing. I think teaching is taken into account, but it's not solely based on teaching as far as I know. It doesn't affect the quality of undergraduate education a whole lot, though it may affect how the university (and thus a degree from the university) is widely perceived.
Melbourne is still considered to be "the best" (whatever that means) in Victoria, if that makes a difference.
