Demand for university courses on rise
October 25, 2008 12:00am

DEMAND for places at Victorian universities has bounced back, as the economic crisis dries up the jobs market.

Early figures show 70,535 school-leavers and other students, including 2468 foreigners, have applied for uni, TAFE or private courses through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre -- up 6 per cent on last year.

Monash University got a record number of top picks, while Melbourne's first-preference position dropped after changes adopted under its US-style degree system.

Observers said economic woes would convince more school-leavers to stay in education, but more uni places would need to be funded to prevent mass knock-backs.

Early student bids reveal a rise in applications for courses in engineering, up 19 per cent, IT, up 12 per cent, agriculture and environment, 11 per cent, and creative arts, 9 per cent.

Higher pay promises appear to have lured more budding teachers, up 4 per cent.

The science sector took a further battering and was down 28 per cent.

Society and culture, health, and management and commerce fields attracted the highest interest.

Universities took domestic first-preference bids from 58,847 people. A further 8064 lobbied for TAFE places and 924 applied for private colleges.

Monash's first-preference applications were up 16 per cent to 12,876.

Rival Melbourne's dropped 8 per cent to 9771, after its undergraduate medicine and education courses were discontinued.

Deakin's top-pick requests were up 15 per cent to 8605.

RMIT's rose 13 per cent to 10,207 and Victoria University's were down 5.5 per cent to 3230

less competition is good, isn't it? I mean less people applying means less competition which means greater chance of getting in?

correct me if i'm wrong which i think i am due to what i've just read.

It is sort of good, we need more people in the science area which is why it is bad.

But as supply of labour in the science field declines, your wages will increase as your skills will be highly sought after due to the relative shortage.

To me, money isn't really that big a thing. It is just disappointing to see less people are getting into the science area.

My thoughts exactly :)

Plus, last year the bureau of statistics already predicted a increase in life sciences graduate demand in 2010 (when I graduate), so hopefully my chances of getting a job are up even higher now.

The places haven't risen... yet.

Just the number of first preferences by students.
(Although, I think this is what you meant to say. Just didn't come out right)

If supply of courses doesn't rise in line with increases in demand for courses, then it can be expected that the requirements will increase.

19% increase in engineering? Dare I say it... Aerospace Engineering/Science might finally break the 98 ENTER barrier. :D

(Hopes they haven't risen too much)

There are lots of Commerce/Business courses at almost every institution so I wouldn't worry too much. They tend to stay around the same every year.

This is market self-correction! :)

People are changing from unprofitable and less desirable skill-sets to more desirable skill-sets!

I just knew Melbourne Uni as a first preference would go down. How does that affect other Uni's? Does all of this mean that ENTER's will go up?

NOT FAIR ALL THIS CHANGE IN MY YEAR

Title: Re: FUCK!!! Demand for University courses SOARS!!!
Post by: costargh on October 25, 2008, 04:11:25 pm
lol. More than likely the 6% increase in applications comes predominately from lower ENTER applicants so I think it will have more of an impact on lower end courses than higher end ones because the higher you go up the ENTER requirements, the less available applicants (that meet the requirements) there are.

Fuck my English is getting worse and worse and its only 6 days until the English exam :(

huh? lol imo, people will not move from one industry to another industry just because the enter scores have risen/lowered (lol). If people have a passion, they will persue it no matter the circumstance. For example, I will always persue a career in finance, even if citi collapses lol.

You're working on the belief that everyone is as sure in their career as you are. If everyone was so sure as to what they wanted to do, why are dropout and transfer rates so high?
Why did my brother enter into Science then try transfer into Engineering at mid-year and why is he now applying to transfer to Bachelor of Business?

Furthermore, people's so called 'passions' have a strong correlation (in a lot, but not all) to their earnings (and earnings is linked to prestige in many respects so the two can sometimes be interchangeable).

Do you mean people tend to have passions for high paying jobs?
Title: Re: FUCK!!! Demand for University courses SOARS!!!
Post by: costargh on October 25, 2008, 06:09:16 pm
Hmm, no not really.
I mean to say that people tend to think they are passionate for something when the prestige and remuneration for their work increases. I think of it as such; if lawyers and coles shelf stackers had the same social standing and remuneration, then the incentive to work harder for your money (ie. being a lawyer) decreases because regardless of what job you do, you will have the same social standing and remuneration.

So to answer your question, now I kinda changed my mind. Sort of, but I don't think money is the only thing. I think when a high paying job is coupled with prestige or social desire, then passion starts to kick in.
Furthermore, I think people are taught from a young age (through various media) to look up to doctors and lawyers from a young age, thereby making people aspire to be like them. We aren't taught to aspire to be the guy working at the milkbar because he doesn't have a high social standing or from what we can see, a high income (although he may).

If they didn't increase places available for next year, it could POTENTIALLY lead to an increase in the ENTER req.

Sure, your intrinsic interest in the field racks up points on the 'benefits' side of your cost-benefit analysis, but let's be realistic here, so does salary. And if there's higher salaries in other fields, then it counts on the 'costs' side as an opportunity cost.

Yes, I am saying that people are thinking: "wow this skill can get me a good paying job - and right now's a good time to swap over, as my current workplace is getting screwed over by the credit crisis, so I'll study this!"

It's a process of creative destruction.

Yeah but not sure if a) I will be accepted (if there is a huge increase in other smarter SEAS people -_-) or b) if the SEAS boost will be enough :P

Does anyone know, typically how much an under-represented school SEAS could get you in under the guaranteed ENTER (of course based on previous years data)?

Oh, you just have Category 7?

I thought you had more than 1 lol.

(I have 3 btw)

My guess is that Cat 7 will most likely be ~1-2 ENTER points consideration.

and anyone know how much consideration successful applicants for CAT 2 will get?

no clue

and I'd presume CAT 2 have fairly minimal impact, as there are many non-english background students who are actually quite fluent.

NO category 7, disadvantaged school does not go up by 1-2. That's stupid. I know that it CAN go up 7-8 ENTER points. My mate, same school as me, applied for the category of disadvantaged school and got in accounting RMIT which needs and ENTER of 85ish with an ENTER of 73. Another mate got into Monash engineering with an ENTER of 83.

Yeah my school has only like 50 year 12s and like most of them don't really seem to care much about VCE.
