First of all, I apologise if this is on the wrong board.
I have a few questions regarding the UMAT:
1. I was wondering where some UMAT preparation material is available for purchase. I know there are ACER books but that's pretty much it.
2.Would an expansion of vocabulary be helpful for this test? My vocabulary hasn't increased much ever since I spent less time with novels.
3.Do you "speed read"? I've seen this skill mentioned a fair number of times on medical student boards.
Thank you.

Mostof the preparation courses are online only. Like medentry and icarus.
Also about the vocab, yes reading more complex material really helps, as it helps you to think critically and improves ur vocab as well.
and no speed reading doesnt really help at all, SPEED THINKING thats important.
Again, from my experience, preparation courses really dont help that much.

^ Maybe by 'courses' you meant material. To clarify, I'm talking about material which are basically practice questions. I interpret courses where you're told how to tackle the test (time management, strategy etc.) :)
Thanks for the help ganges.

Med entry does have alot of practice questions and a couple of their questions have turned up on the actual UMAT
However, they're just not worth the >$500 they want
-
Question:
Is there anywhere you can buy 2nd hand acer questions from, I'm interested to see how I go in all 3 sections just as a comparison.

Its unlikey anywhere would ofiicialy sell them, but maybe it could be on ebay randomly or a VN member might have some. The practice questions are typically alot easier than the actual UMAT

Well if it really is that useful I'll work up some money in the holidays for this. The way I see it, if it really helps me to get into this course, it's worth it. :)
BA22: Buy 'officially sell them', do you also mean that there aren't any stores that sell ACER books?

caramel, I'll have a dig around tomorrow for mine, and put them up if i find them

Yeh, i think only ACER sell them

1. Yes, prep courses as mentioned. If you want to do one, the general consensus I found was that Medentry is the best. Still not a miracle-worker, just that the others are worse. ACER books aren't worth the paper they're printed on, tbh.
2. Yes, if you have time to spare. Definitely brush up on 'emotive' words, you'll need to know subtle differences such as distinguishing 'humiliated' from 'embarrassed' from 'ashamed'.
3. Not speed reading, exactly. Don't do skimming or whatnot, just improve your reading speed. I found chunking to be a useful technique, but everyone's unique. Also I did the thing where you skip useless words and focus on the important ones, eg skipping this entire post to read something more interesting.
