So, i thought i'd start a media exam thread where we can help each other out, and discuss the exam.
How is everyone going in studying so far? I havent done as much as i would like but i have 10 days of study so i can get a lot done then.
Im hoping the extended response is not Social Values but im almost 95% sure it will be, looking from the past exams it's well and truly due.
-
i heard media is much harder than vcd cause vcd i piss easy; other than professional practice grrrrr. gluk on the exam though (Y)
-
u never know. they may be really mean and give us 3 extended response with varying marks across each aos lol
-
Haven't started revising yet for this, apart from re-watching the films. I've got a three day break between my 2nd last exam and media so I'm going to cram. :D
-
ive got 10 days HAHAHAHA HELLO 45+
-
Damn. There's no way you can't get an A+ with that much revision time.
-
Yeah lovecats seeing as though we do similar subject i will be adopting a similar approach. I have a week between now and my History, and then three days between History and Media. This coming week i will be studying about 60% History and 40% Media. For the last three days i will probably spend a day on each AOS and refine my skills - Overall, i'm not looking for extremely high study score for Media because our teacher is a douce and hasn't given us ANY marks back !!
Hypothetically, if i aced the exam with a high A+ do you guys think i can receive an alright study scores excluding my course work? (I've got atleast an A or maybe even an A+ for the major project, and at the least a B average for the SACS). However, that is completely speculation because i have absolutely no idea what my marks are. I'm surprised that i'm even trying to go well in the exam because i have absolutely no motivation (i.e. 100% SAC marks that encourage me to maul the exam and get 40+).
Hmmm.. it's all so inconvenient.
-
haha i beat you i have 11 days lol
i really need to get an SS of 45 to save my ass i did shit as on my group performance exam :'(
i have a heap of trouble with social values.. is any1 doing wall street? or can anyone at least help me a bit?? i got 29/40 for that sace and full marks for narrative and media influence so im like ARGH! :(
please no extended response on social values PLEASE VCAA!! lol
-
wats everyone's tactics for tackling the exam. I'm thinking of doing the section with the extended response first, so i'll be fresh and be able to get the full marks for it.
-
Hey Clinton, i was looking at the cover sheet for this years Media exam and it says that there is 4 questions for each section. Do you think that one will still have the extended response and just 3 really small questions, or all 6 mark questions and no extended response? I just think that seeing as though there will be around 12 questions to do they can't really throw in an extended response.
-
they could throw it in narrative, and it will work out
thats my bet
-
That's true because it is weighted more than Social Values and Media Influence. At this point in time i am finally beginning my exam revision for the course lol.
What's everyone else doing to revise? (Aka Clinton and Sisqu) because we are the only ones who use this forum lol.
-
lmao
It's actually Sisqo with a O.
Im starting revision Monday, after my methods exam. ill re-watch movies for narrative and focus on that, do prac questions. then re-watch social values things, and do the same, prac questions. for media influence, dont ask lol hate it.
then ill be doing full exams at once!
everyone else? (i.e only two others lol)
-
Relax Sisqo lol i knew it was i was just testing you haha.
That sounds like a similar approach to mine. Right now i am writing up a strategy/study routine for each area of study.
Narrative:
• Watch both narrative texts again but view them in terms of audience’s expectations and whether or not they have been fulfilled – Also, look at them from an overall perspective to understand the development and resolution aspects.
• Finish summery – have around 3 clear and concise examples for each story and production element.
• Make a word-bank that explains appropriate media terminology and how I can use it in the exam.
• Rewrite all narrative questions from 2005-2007 under timed conditions.
• Identify weaknesses when completing questions and correct them to perfect future answers.
Social Values:
• Re-watch ‘Shame’ but in terms of the audience and how they would react to the dominant values and emerging values present.
• Redo summery – Focus on each individual value discussed with clear examples for each, the major values held in society at the time and the major representations within the text.
• Link each value with a major character in the text and explain what they do to communicate them.
• Research values of the production period for a tighter grasp.
• Print off summery and begin completing questions from 2005-2007 under timed conditions.
• When doing this, write a small plan for each and use weaknesses to strengthen future answers.
I haven't done Media Influence yet, and i am dreading it lol.
-
me too i hate media influence.
cause ive got all next week off from monday, ive booked in to see my teacher for like 6 periods of the week so that should be good.
u could also do the sample 2005 questions, they have got a few good ones.
here is the link: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/correspondence/bulletins/2005/february/sample/2005mediasamp.pdf
we will contact in this thread for future help or references lol! :)
-
I'm going to start media study probaly tonight by re watching psycho and shine for narrative. And then i'll be doing a lot of questions from checkpoints but with a heavy focus on social values because thats the one im least confident with. And then prob mid to end of the week when my confidence is up i'll start doing full exams within timed conditions.
-
Media Cramming begins 2nite!
Im going to watch my movies for narrative and do all prac questions. then i got a meeting with my teacher tomorrow so ill show her the questions and work on them! so excited only 1 exam left!
woo hooo
YR 12 is almost over :D

Ahhh so lucky, i've got 3 left... argh
Yeah I'm doing the same, just rewatching everything, doing some review questions then prac exams
-
I can't be bothered to study for media!
I feel so guilty
someone needs to knock some sense into me
-

yeh im in the same boat as you. I watched psycho today which was alright but i planned to watch shine aswell but that never happened did it. I'm worried becuase my motivation is down and out, Hopefully tomorrow brings better luck
-
yep lol
ill try and watch my movies tomorrow
-
Dude, we are the people that VCE Media is counting on, and we have all bombed out! Haha. I'm slightly motivated for Media, but i'll get more into it when it's my only exam left. At the moment i am immersed in History for the exam on Thursday, but i have been doing a fraction of Narrative study. I watched my films, and am now finalising my notes before beginning some trial questions - what more can we do anyway? I think the majority of our knowledge for Media, in particular Narrative, will just emerge on the day. As for Media Influence, we may need to now our stuff lol.
-
yeh definitely agreed.
media influence is where we really need to know our stuff!
the other two, we can sorta fluke our way i guess. as in, for narrative, i could exaggerate on something or something along those lines lol.
-
Exactly. I've found from revising Narrative that doing practice questions is probably best, because you can't memorise a handful of examples for each Prod and Story Element. It's just to hard. The examples just tend to flow out as you are completely the question or planning it. I think Social Values shouldn't be to difficult. It's not a very big AOS, unlike Narrative and Media Influence which are rather lengthy.
-
yeh, i find that when i do narrative questions the examples just come into mind and onto paper lol.
social values isn't so hard to write about so that should be okay.
im most worried about media influence, cause you got to know factual information lol
-
I'm doing the insight 08 exam and one of the questions for social values is:
Identify how social values from the production period have shaped the content of other text/s that you also studied this year.
??? is this asking you to refer to another text other than your social values one?
Hopefully i'm reading this wrong.. lol.. don't really have another text for social values up my sleeve!
-

mmm i had that question on the SAC.. but i guess my teacher just wanted us to refer to our social values text.... did you watch those Big M commericals or anything like that? you could use those.. but i think the question is just worded funny... check the soultions if u have them...
-
hey what are we all doing for media influence revision?
i think im just gonna know 4 theories in detail. some examples for each and adv/disadv
positive/negative influence media has had
regulation of media content
anything else?
-
thats what i'll prob be doing
-
im so tired i cant be bothered anymore lol.
i did 11 prac short answer questions today on narrative and an extended response. really over it lol/
-
I watched shine for narrative and then read over and highlighted my notes, i'm slowly feeling my motivation creeping back
-
Lol Clinton your so optimistic. I have 0 motivation lol. I'm very impressed with you Sisqu! 11 practice questions a fuckin' good effort lol. I am slowly starting to do more Media study as History dawns closer - i don't really like to cram all that much.
-
LOL
thankyou!
You know that just actually motivated me to do more, so off i go to do extended response questions
Thank you
-
Go for it ! I will be doing that many questions tomorrow (hopefully) lol.
-
im gonna study study study media all day 2moro, i need to in order to save my enter score. How many hours are you doing a day?
-
Well this week i have been doing around 5-6, but that's like 4 hours of history and 1-2 hours of Media.
-
im feeling good at about today, im gonna start media at about 9:30 and do narrative all day, hopefully around 6 hours yay
-
Lol remember to find some time for Social Values and Media Influence as well. I find it so funny that we all study our arses off for Narrative, but are dreading doing any work for the other AOS lol
-
However, i think i'll split my day up today equally into History and Media. 4 hours for each should be able, considering that my History exam is tomorrow and i won't be doing anything until 3pm.
-
haha yeh, but my plan is to do narrative today, social values 2moro, media influence on friday then on the w/e combine them all together and do a few prac exams
-
That's a good plan of attack - very similar to mine. At the beginning of SWATVAC i was saying to myself that i'd just cram Media into 3 days; Friday, Saturday and Sunday. But now that i've had a bit of extra time i'm trying to get the majority of my Narrative study done, so one of those days can be for a full practice exam.
Have you ever done a complete Media exam under timed conditions? They go for 2 hours and i did a History one yesterday, which goes for the same time, and it fuckin' killed me - It's almost as bad as doing a 3 hour English exam lol.
-
lol damn, na i havent done one yet, but i will be soon. Sounds fun ahahah
-
So fun lol. Well let's be off - important study to do.
We will all reconcile at the end of the day to discuss our progress.
-
LOL
i slept in >:(
i was supposed to wake at 8.30 lol, didnt happen!
do you think watching my movies or doing prac questions is better use of my time?
-
prac questions unfortunately, i think they are the best way to revise
-
yeh i found that too,
my teacher marked my 11 questions and im no fixing them up.
is it worth doing this? or should i just continue with other questions?
-
hmm as long as you know how you could have gone better, than i would continue with other questions incorporating the advice your teacher has given
-
I hate extended response!
I feel as if i tell the story too much in them aarghh
-
Don't worry Sisqo - i'm sure your writing is really good. You're just at that stage in the year where you're picking out any negetives in your answers. However, if you feel like you are telling the story too much, just use less examples and elaborate on them. For example, if you've given an example that shows how Lighting is used to develop a character, focus on the directors intentions in doing this, and then follow on with how it is suggested to make the viewer feel - You are probably already doing this (actually i highly doubt you wouldn't be because you know your stuff), but just relax when you are writing and prepare a thorough plan beforehand.
That probably doesn't help, but i'm sure you're fine anyway!
-
P.s. now i can see what subjects you're doing! Awesome!
-
Yeah i decided to put it in lol.
Thanks for the advice! I'll probably use less examples even though i dont use many lol
I stopped extended response narrative for now, did 2 of them, now im doing short answer for social values, but some of these are like mid essay questions lol!
-
Woo Hoo, finished short answer for Social Values from the questions in the ATOM booklet. They all got too repetitive and i ended up copying and pasting some lol.
I'm leaving extended response for later, i'm off to do short answer for media influence *dreads* lol.
-
Lol you're powering ahead. I just finished my last minute History study (3.5 hours worth lol) and am now going to start my Media revision - I'm actually excited because it's something different. I was getting sick of History, so let's hope Media will be enjoyable!
-
i've done a few narrative questions today, its good i can feel it all coming back to me yippee. how exciting!! haha
-
just did 9 questions on media influence! LOL
drainer it is
-
i've done a few narrative questions today, its good i can feel it all coming back to me yippee. how exciting!! haha
thats great! good work! hopefully you can do the same for the other two AOSs.
that goes for you too Amnesiac!
-
I just did 3 Narrative questions! Haha. I'm sad because i feel as if i know the material, but can't express it efficiently. How do you guys go about structuring your responses?
-
yeh that's the thing i need work most on, just structuring my answers. I think i need to be more concise with some questions.
Do you guys feel as if there isn't that much to study?
-
yeh lol
besides media influence haha
for my narrative questions or with any, if its worth less than 4 marks, i just get straight into it.
with the more longer questions, i give a quick intro like 2 sentences then discuss
-
Do you think this is enough for a 4 mark question? thanks
150 words
With reference to one text, discuss how editing of vision and/or sound is used to structure time within the narrative? (4 marks)
Scott Hicks 1996 film “Shine” is told in a non-chronological fashion, consisting of series of flashbacks and forwards. Through fading and dissolving Hicks cleverly uses this editing technique to suggest a change in the structure of time. In the opening sequence, we see David as a full grown man muttering to himself in the rain. The pounding of the rain dissolves into the clapping of young children, to when David the protagonist was a young boy in a local talent quest. This is a clear transition in time. When Peter, David’s father burns the scrapbook in the fire, the ashes dissolve into flying doves over the Royal College of Music, where David now resides. This explicates David’s break from his domineering father and a chance for him to soar.

This is really good. I just changed a few things above which i made bold. maybe aim for just a bit more than 150, maybe around 200. That should do it
-
Thanks sisqo, thats some good advice, cheers
-
no problems, just make sure you always introduce your films like that. And underline them as well. From then on you can just write the film and year. For e.g. Shine (1996)
-
Oh my god i literally did that question 5 minutes ago lol. Is it just me or do you think the amount of questions they are asking us to complete in 2 hours is a little to much? I don't know if i'll able to finish it in time.
Also, that response is really good Clinton. I don't think you have any problems with expression - it was extremely easy for me to read, and rather enjoyable.
-
How is all the studying going?
I'm going to see my teacher now lol. Only for a couple of hours
Hope its going well :)
-
Because last years exam was quite lengthy and pretty tough, A+ cut off being 50.5/65
i wonder if this years is going to be easier. It has 2 extra questions but i believe they will only be short easy ones
-
I hope so Clinton - it says that there is 4 for each section. I don't want an extended response lol i can barely finish the questions on time as it is.
-
lo i hope their easier so we can do great and all get A+!
-
Hey Clinton/Sisqo, is this how i would phrase a 'Social Value' if i were to include it in an answer.
‘The social value was that immigration should be treated more favorably, notably by allowing various ethic groups to migrate to Australia with less social confrontation.’
-
yep thats fine :)
-
Thanks man, much appreciated.
-
yeh thats fine.
when i introduce social values i say:
"The 'dominant/emerging' value that smoking is disgusting... blah blah blah" haha
I just did the insight 2007 and finished it in 1h 15 min without reading time.
LOL
but my hand writing was, well... you dont want to know. I gotta work on my hand writing lol.
-
This is one that my teacher helped me create:
A social value that was apparent during the production of the 2002 film Australian Rules was the emerging value of racial equality. The attitude that Australia should be an egalitarian society, that is that people should be treated fairly and equally regardless of race was gathering support.
-
thanks for that Clinton. My text is Sex and the City lol. But episodes, not the movie.
so i could say... "A social value that was apparent during the production period of Sex and the City (1999) was the emerging value that interracial dating is acceptable."
-
Lol Sisqo what a crap text to study lol. However, i am studying the film 'Shame', which basically no one has heard of. It's not even in the list of Australian texts (1970-1980) on Wikipedia!!
-
im hoping to finish with about 20 minutes left, that would be perfect. Tomorrow i'm gonna do the 2007 vcaa one and see how i go
-
guys, I swear, I deeply feel sorry for you guys still having exams.
-
Lol, it's not that bad RD - it's Media :P
-
guys, I swear, I deeply feel sorry for you guys still having exams.
haha thanks
-

Its not crap LOL. Actually enjoyable! Much better than most texts people are studying. Such as the old ones as "to kill a mocking bird'
-
Man i'm revising Social Values well - it's so ingraining in my memory now lol. I love cramming for this exam.
-
i hate social values, media influence is my fave than narrative
-
Really? I hate Narrative, but also like Media Influence. Narrative is just so confusing - the scope of the whole area of study just makes it difficult i think. However, i should be ok in the exam hopefully.
-
What is the difference between these two dot points in the study design relating to Media Influence.
• communication theories and/or models including
– linear models (which see meaning inherent within a text, waiting to be uncovered)
– semiotic constructivist models (which see meaning as arising from the interaction of a text
with a reader);
• theories of audience, including those that arise out of
– linear communication theories (including hypodermic and uses and gratifications models)
– semiotic models (such as reception studies);
Thanks.

well im not entirely sure. but ill have a go.
the first one is specifically looking at the theories itself. while the second one is looking at how these theories perceive audience members, i.e. passive or active
-
MEDIA EXAM IS TOMORROW!!!
Who is starting to freak? I haven't yet, but trust me I will!
I don't know what to do today. What are you guys doing?
-
I'm doing some questions for Media Influence. I'm fine with Social Values but i may go over Narrative a little more. Don't stress Sisqo you know the course so well
-
i'm doing media influence today, like you amnesiac im good with SV and later i'll prob go over narrative
-
All systems are go then. Good luck for the study; it shouldn't be too hard for you considering that you enjoy Media Influence.
-
i've just started studying lol
-
^^ lol
i really haven't done much at all today. I pretty much know it all now, i think now its just red over notes and all that
-
i think im in the same boat
although media influence i hate!
clinton would you be able to answer this question for me.
for example, when it asks analyse and evaluate the arguments both for and against a theory, what exactly are these arguments?
-
alright with a question like that you'd talk about the strengths and weaknesses of the theories. For instance the bullet/hypodermic thoery a weakness is not everyone behaves in the same manner and this is demonstrated when we look at War of the Worlds. Not eveyone in America feared for a Martian attack. After discussing that, you would then go on to the strengths of bullet theory. That being it is simple and easy to apply.
I would also crtitique the research used for the theories. i.e bullet theory research cannot be repeated as it is based on speculation.
i hope this has helped :)
-
yeah pretty sure i'm going to fail this exam, no care ever
-
yeh it has thanks
and millstone you will do fine!
-
I'm just going over Media Regulation now because it is so boring and they will undoubtedly give us a heafty question on it.
I know where your coming from with your previous question Sisqo - it's been on a lot of exams, but isn't actually that hard.
-
Media regulation is my favourite part of media influence lol!
-
Lol really? It's so boring!
-
haha i hate media regulation and its the thing i hardly know about, worst thing is its destined to be on the exam.
Im gonna go over it again 2moro morning and thats all i'll do fro 2moro
-
Yeah good idea Clinton, i'm going to do a small amount of study tomorrow too. Mainly on audience reception for Narrative and the whole Media Violence debate for Media Influence. I just went over Media Regulation a few hours ago so it's all fresh in my head so it should be ok.
-
I'm hoping for a small mark question on regulation this year. I don't find the topic too bad but I'm more confident writing about theories of media influence. Not going to be happy if there's a similar question to that 2007 one.
As for studying, going to spend a little bit more on social values tonight (watching my awful text again.. eugh) then going to do a small bit of revision tomorrow morning.
-
Hey lovecats i don't think there will be any extended answers this year. Just by looking at the cover sheet it says that there is 4 questions for each section, so i'm predicting that they have changed the format a little bit.
-
^^ ooh that would be interesting, i hope you're right
-
Me too lol. Well, think about it. If there are 4 questions, how could they have room for an extended response anywhere without making the 3 predecessors extremly small? Hopefully they've realised that they are making these exams to long, and will hopefully shorten it for us lol. Or perhaps they have put semi-extended answers in each section, thus allowing for consistency among all 3 areas :|
-
OMG Amnesiac, if your right about no extended response, Oh lol.
During reading time ill be trying to send you thank you messages LOL.
Extended response are the worst cause then you have to plan it out and make sure you miss nothing.
Please let there be no extended response :)
-
yeh well the only thing i can think of is if the extra questions are like, name a story element? then in the following question it would be like with the story element u named in the previous question how does it combine with blah blah blah.
But im liking the no extended response idea :)
-
LOL Yeh me too.
i think thats how they might set a few questions out. Or for example, with media influence, one question may be identify 2 comm theories for 2 marks. Then, the following one saying how do the above theories stated see audiences differently, or something along those lines.
-
Okay...
Well this is the last time ill be on until after the exam. So good luck to everyone and I'm sure we will make VCE Notes proud!!!
GOOD LUCKKKK :D :D :D
-
GOOD LUCK GUYS!!!!!
-
I'm so keen for all this to be over
-
It will be in a few hours.
Good luck everyone! ;)
-
3pm is such a bad time, means waiting all day argh
-
I don't mind it too much. It's giving me extra revision time. Not that I'll do that much in the next couple of hours anyways..
-
I'm cramming! Haha joke. Good luck Sisqo, Clinton and Lovecats! We will all kick its arse and discuss it at 5:30 this afternoon!!
GOOD LUCK!
-
man can someone help me really fast lol...
what is media regulation??
i dont remember ever learning about it....
-
hahah oh dear, its how organistations like the OFLC, ASB control what we the public get to see
-
mmmmm i might have stuff on OFLC sumwhere in this pile of papers next to me..
im at school atm and of corse my teacher isnt here when he said he would be.. thanks clinton =)
hopefully ill get 40+ lol good luck... just under 3 hrs left.. oh gosh lol
-
Yeah it's a very dry area to try and learn, but it's fairly important. It's bound to be on the exam, but probably in a minor capacity.
The basic notion behind it is if the media has all this influence, shouldn't someone be controlling it so that it doesn't influence the public in a bad way? Government agencies such as the ACMA and OFLC have a significant say in what content is regulated and how it is regulated. But in a nutshell, all media forms must be classified in some way before they can even enter Australia. It's just one of our rules as a nation, despite the whole freedom of speech, media and public opinion thing.
-
How good no extended response!!
Although that 12 marker in narrative was pretty much an entended response lol
How did you all go? I so killed that exam =) I am very happy I loved the questions and thought they were really good and easy to answer.. I kinda lost track of time and just finished the 12 marker at the end of time.. I wanted to go into more detail but my hand was about to fall off lols
-
YAY ITS FINALLY OVER!!!
I thought it was pretty good. The wording of a few questions were a bit stupid though! I think overall it was okay though. hopefully i can get my 40+!
-
Sisiqo I bet you will u have shown you knew a good deal about the study design
Yeah some of them wete worded werd and I had to re read over and over.. In reading time when I read the define reception context my jaw dropped (literally) and I freaked out im like omg what is it! Lol
Hope we all do good =) please 40+ too lol
-
WOO HOO all over, im fairly happy with how i went, i just want 40+ scaled
-
I think i went great as well. Hopefully i didn't lose any marks on Social Values and Media Influence because i nailed those, but i left Narrative until last. I just had enough to time to complete the essay before pens down, but i didn't go into enough detail on my second texts' opening and closure (even though i wrote 4 pages lol). After that i had like 1 minute to go back and answer the reception context question (part b) but i only got to fill up half the space. In essence, i probably got about an 8/12 on that extended response and 2/4 on the reception questions, but aside from that i don't think i would've lost that many marks. I wrote into the extra space for a number of questions, but found myself repeating some of my examples for Social Values. However, they were all great questions and i never struggled on writing down information; it was just about getting it out in time! In the extended response my head was full of all these great ideas, but i could only partially put them down on paper and hence they probably lost a bit of their awesomeness lol.
Anywho, enough ranting about Media... Exams are over! I'm going to go and get extremely drunk !!
I will be back on December 15 to discuss our results! Haha. It's been a great year discussing Media related information with you Clinton and Sisqo!! I hope we all go tremendously well!
Much love, xox
-
I have never heard of the term 'reception (receptive?) context' in my life before. I am devastated. :(
-
awww tash, im sure u did fine.

Reception context refers to how an audience member receives a text. i.e. Whether at home on a small screen or at the theater on a large screen with surround sound.
-
I thought reception context wasn't only the physical setting of the audience but also the emotional and cultural context? i dont really know, i just remember tlkaing about it for like 10mins at the start of the year and then not speaking about it again...
-
^^ thats exactly what i remember, doing 10 minutes start of the year and thats all
-
yeah time was definetely a factor when trying to complete all those questions...
i had to go into more detail on my second texts closure and opening too but i didnt have enough time so i ushed it.. im hping at least 6-7/12 for that one.. social values i think i did better than my SAC but im sure ill bomb out lol

Seeing as though the majority of the state wouldn't know reception context i think they'll give a mark to anyone who partially got it correct
-
i think i made a dodgy mistake for Amelie in terms of reception context and i said that the fact tht the film was in french cud alter peoples understanding of the narrative and relation to the characters but it also at the same time aided the reception becoz the film was set in paris and it added to the atmosphereof the narrative.
TOTALLY wrong?

Mmm i'm not sure. I would've just been safe and said that because you viewed it in a classroom environment on a television it hinders your ability to analyse the production and story elements because they aren't completely enhanced. That's what i wrote anyway, but it wasn't a very good question. You probably would've got a few marks for your answer because the fact that it is in french is a legitimate reason why it would effect the audiences reception of it.
