Clearly, the UoM should receive 100% of government funding, and all Monash CSP places should be cut. They are destroying the choices of those who want to come to the UoM. </pretentious>  :2funny:

I think that UoM will lose this on the Melbourne Model.

Oh btw. I am not going to vote because I really don't know too much about the differences etc. Maybe they will come up in this thread

I don't see how you can say one is better than the other.
I personally like monash better because
1. it is nice and close
2. I was at UoM for some IS thing last year that happened to be on the same day as their open day, and I just liked the atmopshere etc of monash a lot better

But it depends on what you want to do etc

Also, cheers to you costargh for bringing FSN back into a bit more activity with a poll that's sure to become heated. I think we're sick of god-debates and politics for now :)

Haha I am safely the poll king. Yeh I was surprised no one made this poll. I reckon a majority of South Eastern based Melbournians would vote Monash because of accessibility.  Hell yeh over god debate. I can't believe its still going. As for politics... emotion :"drained"

Monash feels like home.  ;D

But I don't know what to pick. I have nothing against either universities.

Edit:
Added "Undecided" option

I'm undecided. SWAY ME!
ha cos it is about time i decided on preferences

I think it's cheaper to live on campus at monash yeah? uom is crazy expensive. Also the breadth doesn't suit me.
Does anyone know about the opportunities that each uni offers to do exchanges at overseas unis?? I know uom is pretty good for this, but I don't know alot about monash.

I like Monash for convenience but Melbourne seems more prestigious.
Haha to be honest either would be great to get into

As far as I can see, they're both great universities with good reputations. I don't think one uni can be definitively better than the other, especially for undergrads. Some unis may just be better suited to different people. I'm having trouble with the Monash/Melbourne decision too, but I live in the North East, so as far as location goes Melbourne is better, though if could get in the Dean Scholars Arts Program at Monash, that could be a better option for me.

I dunno ... I think it depends on what course you want to do. Like I've been told (by a very biased party, mind you) that UoM music is far superior to Monash music, but that Monash medicine is better than UoM's. Though I agree with coblin that if Monash gets more votes it'll be because of that damned Melbourne Model

Well as others have mentioned, it all comes down to what you want to do. For me neither university will be an option, i was considering monash but its just too far :(. Anyways from what i've heard ACU is probably the best for teaching ;D
Both universities have their strengths, and both have good reputations, so I'll just vote undecided :D

What do you think the babies would look like? Would they be the offspring of 150 year old buildings? Glyn Davis?

Ok how about if Melbourne and Monash both offered similar courses for a certain field of study and you had the choice between the two. Which one would you choose.
Eg. I don't know what I would choose if I had the choice between Commerce at Melbourne or Monash. How does the new Melbourne Model change the situation?

I like both unis!!

Because I did the UMEP thing this year...Im used to getting to places at Melbourne uni...oh yeah...I like Melb uni because its very close to the city where I can go and do shopping!!!!

But Monash is also a good place to go to...DOUBLE DEGREES!!!!

But Melbourne has a lot of scholarships available..espeically for disadvantaged people.....

Arrgh!!!

MONASH MONASH MONASH!

Awesome Aerospace Engineering program, synchotron, proximity to my house, fairly decent science department, awesome exchange program overseas and it has a really good social scene, too. :D

Plus, you know, there's that added benefit of being able to do a double degree. :D

Quite true, although I like Monash music's freedom for jazz. I dunno, I just feel like monash offers a less... conservative/strict to tradition side to their music course over Melbourne, which I find kind of appealing.

But I'm hoping to get into Melbourne so I can study engineering along with music, something I'm BEGGING to do at monash

really hard to say, UoM is stronger in some courses but Monash is stronger at others

the only thing that pisses me off with UoM is this new Melbourne Model  :P

The Melbourne Model is pretty cool from what I know- breadth and depths subjects :).
But it does suck for people who were doing double degrees and now it's all being changed and they have to do postgrads. Or is that wrong? Just what i heard.

something along those lines...

there is a bit more to it, but i'm probably not the best to explain coz my knowledge is a bit vague

Does anyone here believe that Melbourne University will always be the preferred choice for people with ENTER's over 99.00 or around that, purely because it contains the capital of Victoria in its name? LOL

I am actually being serious though. I think especially for international or interstate students, "Melbourne University (or the UoM)" sounds more prestigious than "Monash University" purely because of the name. Even for myself, sometimes I feel that that Melbourne may just "sound" better but not actually offer a better level of education (purely speculative).

the model of melb uni is such a waste of time, i dont get why u have to do a general course the move onto preferred field
Its not so much a "general course" because you are still selecting a "preferred field" in which you undertake your degree however it is "general" in the sense that a certain percent of your course must be from subjects outside of your field. I think the whole idea of the Melbourne Model is to give students a broader education and not leave them with one qualification that may not be adequate due to changing occupations and professions etc.
However whilst saying that, it is quite contradictory of them to imply or state that when they are taking away double degrees. But I guess that the "general" degree replaces the broadness of a double degree.

Hahaha. That's why some of my relatives back in China believe Victoria Uni is the ultimate top of the notch uni here, cos omggggg it has the state in its name!
(I'm serious)

EDIT: no offence to VU students / prospective students

Not anymore. The Melbourne Model hasn't seemed to cause a drop in preferences overall, but I think students will now think more carefully about the uni they put as first preference now that there is more choice (or - depending on how you think- less choice if you consider the abolishment of all those double degree programs) for courses, rather than just going to Melbourne for the name automatically. I'm sure it will remain a really popular/prestigious institution though.

And if anything, Melbourne will be the top choice because the grounds are pretty :P

I second the grounds argument! Another thing, I reckon food from the little shops at monash is more expensive than at melbourne.

Me, I hope to go to monash mainly because it's close and is an excellent uni, regardless of UoM's prestige. Had my eyes set on monash since yr 10, and I'm not budging  :)

it all comes down to what your going to be studying and where you live

for me im doing engineering and monash has been voted top of the state for engineering and ive heard that melbourne's engineering degrees are alot more theory based (eww). Also monash is like a 10 minute drive... thats why monash is more appealing to me.

but if i was living in the city and wanting to study arts i would choose UoM

I've heard Monash has a "better crowd" of people. Is that just a whole bunch of crap or what? *Looks at Coblin*

Yeah. That sort of claim really cannot be substantiated. Hardly anyone has been to both universities. They may have dropped by at Melbourne once, to use their libraries or something (because ours are better LOL), but obviously you will feel that everyone is more hostile if you are in an environment of strangers. You would feel the same if you went to Melbourne but dropped by at Monash.

I suspect it comes from the flawed idea that "higher achievers end up at Melbourne, therefore they're socially inept". That is completely wrong. You should look at Medicine students, they party fucking hard :D

Lol yep thats the flawed idea that a lot of people have. I think I however would be able to party harder wherever I went  :D
