Title: [advanced] Maths/Chem in SE suburbs
Post by: Mao on November 23, 2008, 11:39:41 pm
Due to popular request, I feel obliged to make a thread

Subjects Offered
VCE Mathematical Methods
VCE Specialist Mathematics
VCE Chemistry
UMEP Mathematics (University of Melbourne Extension Program)
MUEP Mathematics (Monash University Enhancement Program)
MUEP Chemistry (Monash University Enhancement Program)

I've had a few inquiries with university tuition as well. I will deal with these on a case-by-case basis, please contact me directly.

The main goal I try to achieve is to help students gain a good conceptual understanding, focusing on the fundamentals and problem solving techniques. I have a very flexible teaching style, what happens in a session is usually the result of pure synergy between myself and the student. I know the course materials almost entirely by heart, so we can cover many unrelated topics in one session if you wish, though the main benefit is I will teach based on how much you want to know, and I will always push you to the limit of 'just before overload'. I am also majoring in maths and chemistry at uni, and I can give you extensions beyond the VCE level.

I will be charging $50/hr for new students. The first lesson will be free, and the next three lessons will be 'trials'. At the end of the trial, we will make a mutual decision on whether to continue or not. I will only be offering in the SE suburbs, the State library is not really an option for me due to parking. Summer starts are definitely possible. I don't mind a bit of driving here and there, so long as it is less than half an hour away.

I will teach you the courses as sciences, not subjects. The main focus is on understanding, not marks. I will ensure you become a good scientist, the exam practice and preparation will mostly be up to yourself. If you think you will learn best by grasping the fundamentals (more subtle than it sounds, and often involves higher level concepts) and logic, and if you can justify the cost, then I would be glad to have you on board.

I do realise my price is rather high compared to my fellow competitors on this forum. Please understand that what I offer is not the dime-a-dozen VCE tuition, the real value in having me is my breadth of knowledge in maths and chem. This is very beneficial to some, but in most cases completely unnecessary. If you want a comprehensive coverage of the course, and would like detailed notes and good exam techniques, please take your money to my competitors, I'm not very good at doing that. If you are an independent learner, please spend your money on things you enjoy (I actually suggest you don't hire a tutor at all, buy a good uni level textbook with that money and reap the benefits).

But if you have a thirst for knowledge, and you have gotten past reading that and now feel invigorated, please send an email.

Academic record

2010 - Part Time Research Assistant - Theoretical chemistry group, School of Chemistry
2011 - Summer Vacation (Research Assistant) - Nanobionics group, Department of Chemical Engineering

(One publication is lined up, finally)

Awards
Premier's VCE Award - Chemistry [2008]
Australian Student Prize - 2008
Engineering Excellence Award - Monash University Faculty of Engineering Scholarship
Dean's List - 2010, Academic Award in Faculty of Science
Chris Ash Prize - 2010, Academic Award in School of Mathematics (Linear Algebra/Discrete Mathematics)

Tuition Experiences
Tutoring since 2007 (when I was in year 11, heh).
Formal VCE tuition started in 2009. Most of my class of 2009 kids reached 40+ in the subjects I tutored (except one or two out of fifteen). Predominantly public school kids, all got into their first preferences (if I remember correctly).

Thanks for the continuously overwhelming support guys!

On an off note, the class of 2011 will most probably be the last year of my tuition services. I have two places available for 2011 (only offering 5 in total). :)

Update: Applications for Semester 1 2011 is now open.
GONE FOREVER.

Having been a victim to Mao's great tutoring, I highly recommend him as your resource for knowledge and understanding. Although I only used him for methods, I'd still say that this guy know his shit from one end of the axis to the other. If anyone is looking for a maths tutor then this is the guy you want to be helping you. He does achieve what he aims for as a tutor.

P.S. howcome I didn't get first session free you prick? FUCK YOU

thought that i might as well put it in the right place.

I'm in berwick, reasonably close to you, Narre library would be the best choice.
I can do specialist, does that suit your needs?

I've never been taught face-to-face but, i'd endorse Mao-

You'll probably FAIL Monash University Enhancement Studies mathematics if Mao isn't helping you.

Now repeat that in your brain in CAPS.

Endorsed.

Mao told the News it was hard work, persistence and a vibrant online student community; VCENotes.com, that got him across the line.

Mao, in the article it says you've won a premiers award?

You know already?

Or the principal has never had a 50 and doesn't know how it works?...Not being sarcastic there.

Go Kambrya!

my bet is on that, it's only his first months being a principal.

Erm. Premier's Awards haven't been announced yet =P As Mao said, it's probably his principal being misinformed that 50 doesnt necessarily equate to a Premier's Award.

Also recommended.

Throughout the year me and Mao worked together lots.  He helped me in Methods, and we'd do really complicated Specialist questions together [Which he would always solve first].  And in Enhancement Mathematics I found Mao was the only person to understand all the key concepts.

+1 Mao.

no med? if it was the money from the scholarship that swayed you, trust me you are forgoing a great deal more income by not choosing med or one of the other tightly regulated health professions

A great year has passed, and many of my students achieved excellent scores that landed them where they want to go.

I am now again available for anyone looking for private tuition. Very few places are available, and I will only be offering places to those reasonably close. Please feel free to email/pm me.

The first post has been updated with my most recent academic record and a few small details.

Thank you guys for the huge positive response yet again. I have again taken up a group that is bigger than I anticipated.

I have had a couple of requests to tutor in the CBD, it is quite far to travel for me. However, depending on a job interview I have on friday, I may or may not be able to fit you in. I will email you when I know.

Applications to Semester 1 2010 is now closed.
