Title: Rejected
Post by: dekoyl on December 01, 2008, 01:49:29 pm
I'm going to be frank.

I got rejected from UMEP. Anything I could do besides sitting back and say "oh well"?

Did you apply for MUEP?

Otherwise, yeah, there isn't much more you can do.

I did try to apply. However my teacher won't sign the application because the application says "only if student shows exceptional skills in mathematics" to which he thought I didn't show in my exam.

Don't you find out in January?
Yes, you do.
I'm sorry but this is an early post because I'm certain I didn't get in. Even my head of maths says so.

Think it this way, if you weren't doing well at maths at the high school level, to throw on this (very heavy) extra burden on your year 12 can only serve to disadvantage you.

I went to head of maths to get my raw GMA results. It was after that I wanted him to sign the application. He read through it and came across the headmaster's recommendation part (with the exceptional results bit) and he said that the headmaster can't really sign it because of my exam score.
So yeah in the end I got 0 signatures.
well your an accelerated maths student, isnt that exceptional enough??
I guess MM3/4 in year 11 isn't exceptional :)
so you havn't been rejected

lol...

Yeah I haven't but I wanted to ask early so I can take immediate action if there were any.

Well okay. I just wanted to do it because it looked fun, sounds fun, could work out nicely for me if I do engineering, and the 4.0 increment can possibly take place of my methods SS if need be.

How come you're so determined to do UMEP Maths? Are you going to do maths at uni?

One of my friends got 39 in Methods in yr11, probably around a low A for Gen Maths Advanced, and got into UMEP Maths. But in yr12 he only got 31 in spec and 50 (exactly!) in UMEP Maths. In the same class there was a girl from another school who got 36 (I think) in Methods in yr11 and got into UMEP Maths, but then failed miserably in yr12 (she got like 30-something).

On the other hand, there are guys like enwiabe and me who did much better than expected in UMEP Maths. So it's really hard to tell what to expect from students.

I didn't even get the opportunity to do an extension program because of my appalling Psychology study score. So I just focused on my subjects this year, and eventually, managed to pass everything (don't know how I passed maths :O).

I guess not getting in isn't the end of the world... :)

I'm determined  because I like maths. I feel comfortable doing something that I know is either right or wrong and not much in between. It looks fun and I had the idea that it could complement specialist maths. Yes I'm probably going to do something with maths by the looks of it. :)

or
c) think they should equal respect as opposed to a long time contributer with quality posts.

I'll paste here what I PM'ed dekoyl for people who do get rejected from UMEP. All hope is not lost!

UMEP rejected me way back in January of 2007 because my year 11 marks were terrible (I neglected all my 1+2s and concentrated solely on 3+4s done during year 11, a mistake I regret a little bit). In any case, my Methods 3+4 mark was reasonably good (44) so I wrote a letter of appeal to the dean of admissions for the extension program and my maths teacher put in a phonecall for me. Eventually, they agreed, and said it was because of my good methods mark and determination to get into the program (so really sound like you're eager about the program, but don't come across as TOO eager :P).

c) they shouldn't deserve the same respect as some of our longtime-standing contributors
?

You can't, because you don't know them, because they haven't had the time or opportunity to show what they really could do.

honestly I respect some newer members more than some of our older members, and some things newbies say have some degree of validity. just because you've been here longer doesn't mean you are a 'better' member than them. there is no need to use the label 'newbie asses'.

a) no one knows everything. no one.
b) that's just stupid. How can some one know what is the better way for people to behave in general. Does that person even know who the other person is? So then how can they know how others should behave?
c) A person who has contributed to VN over a long time in a helpful way should be given more credit than a new person with 2 posts. I think you can agree on that to.

edit: btw i'm not saying they aren't helpful or they don't make useful posts. Hell a lot of newbies make some of the best posts here. But my point is, if a person who has made <5 posts comes on and degrades another with 300 posts + who has contributed lots to the site, i see that as being an ass.
When you go out socializing and meet new people, you don't straight away act as if you've known them all their life. You slowly get to know them, be attentive, social etc and then become friends.
