Judging by the amount of activity in this place, this is shaping up to be a one man army.

;D Yes, I'm afraid it is. When I saw that there were no replies to this thread, I kinda felt sorry for you. ;) BUT, whilst this thread may not and will not garner as much success as the Team UoM thread, ANU definitely owns UoM. Congrats on getting into the uni!!
-
EZ is going.
-
Excellent. We can be room buddies just like that episode of the Simpsons where Homer had to attend jury duty and ended up bunking with Skinner
-
I got in. Doing Science, now hopefully I can get my preference for accommodation!
Congrats to everyone who got in! :D
-
^See. This guy here is a fucking boss.
-
I got an offer for Arts/Law - I'm ecstatic!
Edit: How can I find the cut-off for this year?
-
ANU has a really good Journalism course, so I might join the team in 2012.

My accommodation is still pending. Anyone know the specific date when it gets released?
Also, did you know, if you literally translate Monash from French to English, you get 'My ass'?
-
Bugger, forgot my number. It's my VCE number without the letter but that's only 8 digits, what's the 9th digit?

"Domestic Accommodation Offers for Semester 1, 2011 will commence from the 20th January 2011."

Try 3 at the front
^Thanks bud
-
Thanks Cianyx that worked. Was offered Comm/Law but I got in at Monash so i won't be joining you next year :(
-
"Your application is currently being considered by: APP Bruce Hall" - does this mean I'm definitely getting into Bruce (I have the 1st year guarantee) and only Bruce? Like it's out of the question I'd go anywhere else?

Thanks mate!
But any idea what the user name would be? Is the VTAC number plus or minus some characters or would it be something I created ages ago? I just can't rememember.
-
It's 3 followed by your VTAC number. Your password should be the day of your birth and then the month (e.g. 15th September = 1509). Hope I've helped :)

Sorry but the link that Damo17 sent me requires a username and password on the left-hand side of the page...I tried what you said and it didn't work. You gave me details for UAC login but I'm not sure what I need for ANU accommodation login.
-
Was it 96 that you actually needed to get into ANU? I wasn't sure if they had actually updated the site or if it was an older score
What did you get Benc?
Also, with interstate Universities, do you have to apply separately to the preferences?
-
Yes 96 for comm/law
-
Yes 96 for comm/law
Exactly what I was thinking! If I don't get into Monash, hopefully I can get into ANU. Anyone know which uni is the better one for Law, and what's the go with practising law in Victoria with a degree from a Canberra uni?

Sorry I just remembered the accommodation is a random sequence of numbers. You'll find it in your email (e.g. "Thanks for registering, your user ID is..." ).

Law and its various double degrees stayed at 96 - I got in with 96.5.

An ANU law degree allows you to practice in Victoria just fine - and that's all I know on the subject. ANU and Monash are pretty much the same (they're both G8.) ANU specialises in International Law I believe, but I don't know about Monash.
-
Found the email. It says 'Your application is currently being considered by: APP John XXIII'
When do I find out if I have actually been offered accommodation?
-
I got a Medical Science offer, but will be rejecting and staying in Melb for now.
Looking at ANU for grad courses though. :)
-
Count me in!
PhB in science, and I've already gotten my accommodation offer :)
-

Thank God, with an abysmal ATAR like that you must have been relieved to get in! (sarcasm)
My accomodation status says 'Academic offer made' even though I've accepted the offer. Is it just a delay or haven't I properly accepted?
Edit: How many people do Law at ANU?
-
Count me in!
PhB in science, and I've already gotten my accommodation offer :)
Congrats, where are you going to be staying?
I'll be starting my PhD at ANU next year, though I'll (finally) be living off campus.
-
Do you have to accept your academic offer before they send you the accomodation one?
-
Do you have to accept your academic offer before they send you the accomodation one?
Nope - the 'Academic Offer Received' thing leaves you open to an accommodation offer according to the site. It's at the page with the explanation for what all the accomodation statuses mean.
Edit:
Academic Offer Made: Domestic Students only. UA acknowledge that you have received an academic offer for ANU and will make you an offer of accommodation when a room becomes available.
Academic Offer Accepted: UA acknowledge that you have accepted your academic offer for ANU and will make you an offer of accommodation when a room becomes available.
-
Congrats everyone! I'm really glad to see so many people coming to ANU. You will love it, really :) Even if you do spend the next 3-6 years complaining about Canberra :D
With accommodation: basically what happens is that you'll be considered for your first preference. If you don't get your first preference, you will go into a draw to be randomly allocated an accommodation place. This could end up being a hotel, but even if you get that it's a pretty sweet deal (free meals and a free bus pass) and you'll be tied to one of the residential halls which you can move into once a place opens and go to events with. In any case, I know waiting is excruciating, but as long as you applied on time, you will have a roof over your head and lots of activities to do.
Count me in!

Wow humph, congrats on getting into the PhD programme (not that it would have ever been in doubt anyway).

PhB in science, and I've already gotten my accommodation offer :)
Someone please clarify what exactly a PhB is :)
Like could I do one in any subject? What does it entail/allow for?

Bachelor of Philosophy. No idea about the other questions.

Basically, think of it as a superenhanced Arts/Science course, where there's more room for you to accelerate your courses, and also more room for you to study things not normally on offer at the university. It gives you a head start if you want to do research/academia, and presumably also puts you in good stead to be considered for post-graduate degrees around Australia (I hear one of the more recent classes had a lot of JD students coming out of it), and for overseas.
-
So lets say I'm interested in doing a phd in the future, would a PhB be a good starting stone? Can you even do PhB's in double degrees/with commerce or law?
Confus
-

Confus
For PhD, definitely. You can't do PhBs in double degrees with things like Law, but from what I hear it's not unheard of to take up subjects from other faculties in them. A friend of mine told them she wanted to do Economics and they seemed to approve (albeit she's not going anymore), and I'm considering the same thing now.
-
Yeah, if you are looking at doing a PhD, a PhB is well suited to you. Unfortunately you cannot do it as a double degree, although you can have an 'out-of-faculty major' (you just can't do honours in a subject that is out of the faculty). For instance, I know someone doing PhB arts who is also majoring in physics (I think). You can also pretty much do courses from any faculty you want as long as you meet the prerequisites and it's not law.

So, I heard it's legal to possess two marijuana plants. Is this true?
-
I think so. Certainly, you are legally allowed some amount (I don't know how much). But it's decriminalised rather than legalised (I'm not sure of the difference). I also know that if you are high and walking around the streets in some kind of daze the police can take you into custody until you sober up and such, just like with drunk people.
-
I think decriminalised means you can possess it and make your own, but you can't sell it like a dealer would.
Edit: It might be illegal to be caught buying it.
Can anyone answer my query from a page ago about my accommodation page being 'Academic Offer Made' despite me accepting the offer the night I got it?
-
I'm not sure why, but you should get an accommodation offer anyway. Maybe it takes some time to update on the system?
-
Yeah the status explanation says I should - my worry is that I didn't properly accept my offer. I went through the entire form and my dad has a screenshot of the 'you've successfully accepted' page so hopefully it is just a delay.
-
Mine is the same. To be fair, I didn't really submit it on time. I did the application after I received my results. I think decriminalised means that you don't wave it in front of the cops and they won't arrest you.
-
Your results being your ATAR or your offer?
-
ATAR
-
I don't think that should affect the speed of accommodation in recognising you accepted your offer. I think what's clear is it's a delay and not some error on our part. :)
-
I just accepted the PhB offer...
-
I just accepted the PhB offer...
*thumbs up* nerd.
-
Congrats. I guess I'd be doing mine over the weekend
-
Accepting your offer you mean? It only takes a minute - you do it online.
-
Still waiting for accommodation though, sigh. My parents said they'd get me a place near Canberra (since I got a scholarship and all) if I didn't get something I wanted though, so I'm feeling a bit more secure. Still...=/
-
What's 'something you wanted'? Like a hall as opposed to those rented out hotels?
-
Done. I'm thinking of applying at Centrelink for some of their welfare cash. It appears you get paid for being a student living away from home and if you pay rent
-
Really? Your parents don't have to be broke or anything?
-
Beats me. Hence why I need to find out. Also, I just accepted my offer
-
For what course? Well done :)
-
Commerce/Economics.
-
I accepted.
For those waiting for an accommodation offer, I suspect you all applied for Bruce. Mine is stuck at offer given (for a course) even though I have accepted it. People who applied for some other colleges have already received their offer for accommodation. Still at least we have an accommodation guarantee so we are covered.
-
Yup - I applied for Bruce too. Are they just slower than the other colleges to get through applications?
-
I know Burgmann and Johns start to decide on places fairly early because they are independent and therefore don't have to worry about various quotas (e.g. percentage of girls and boys and percentage of international students - although they still have their own quotas to meet and they like having a balance of students although the Burgmann principal seems to think that an international student is someone with a foreign-sounding name). They also rely on interviews which they usually do way before offers even come out. UniLodge is similar where they tend to just approve as many applications as they can. I think with the ANU-run colleges (so, everywhere else) they are much more concerned with meeting quotas so I assume the process is a lot slower. That's my theory anyway.
-
I still haven't got an offer from John's...it's still under consideration apparently. :-\
-
Off topic: Eriny could you please tell me where I could get a signature like yours for Arts/Law? Thanks. :)
-
I know as a fact that Ursula offers have also started coming out. Literally none of the Bruce applicants I know (about half a dozen) have heard anything yet though.
-
In that case, I don't know. I was told that Burgmann had filled all their rooms already (though there will be a significant number of people who reject their offer and so they'll still make more offers over the next few weeks).
In any case, the wait is really difficult, I realise, but it will all be fine.
Off topic: Eriny could you please tell me where I could get a signature like yours for Arts/Law? Thanks. :)
I made this sig with an online userbar generator. You can google 'userbar generator' and make your own. Alternatively, you can get someone who is pro at image editing and just copy+paste mine into Photoship and change the word 'Philosophy' to 'Law'. Or you can use this one (I'm totally pro with MSPaint):

This is the userbar generator I used: http://designer.userbars.com/
I just had a play around with it, and got this:

Hey that's great - how did you get the ANU backdrop? I might try find one that's not animated. Did you make it yourself or is there some university template I'm missing for this thing?
Edit: Making one myself for laughs. :P
-
The backdrop is just from anu.edu.au
-
Yeah that's what I'm using now - I'm putting the words 'Australian National University' side-by-side to fit them in. This is all in paint btw :P

I didn't use the generator you recommended, but how's this?

Thanks Eriny for everything :) If anyone else from Team ANU would like a sig like mine I'm happy to make one :) Not to imply anyone's asked or that mine is that great at all.

So, I heard it's legal to possess two marijuana plants. Is this true?
No, not legal, it's just a fine ($100 a plant maybe?) if you get caught instead of being prosecuted something something. Not really sure, I don't speak law...
I know as a fact that Ursula offers have also started coming out. Literally none of the Bruce applicants I know (about half a dozen) have heard anything yet though.
Huh. Weird. Think my friend might be the guy who chooses who gets into Bruce, I'll ask him what's with the delay.

To humph, roger that.
Also, aside from accepting the offer, was there something else I was supposed to do?
-
Huh. Weird. Think my friend might be the guy who chooses who gets into Bruce, I'll ask him what's with the delay.
Please do, I would like to get my drive to Canberra organised (not sure if I can stay on-campus for enrolment or need to book a hotel)

Oh shit me too. Does this mean we have roommates and have to pay more?
-
Ok I have the sheet - it's less rent but we have to self cater. Do we need to have roommates? I HATE OTHER HUMAN BEINGS IM A RECLUSE.
-
Hopefully we can get single rooms. Sigh.
-
Oh man, I might be Evangelion's roommate.
Do you think if we buy cheap food we can break even with what we would have paid for say Bruce?
Edit: Does this mean we're definitely going to Warrumbul?
-
^^tbh I have no idea, but I reckon food shouldn't be an issue. It's not hard at all to survive on about $50 a week!
We should totally organise a plan once we actually get offers 8D
-
:( That sucks. Demand has been so high this year and to make matters worse people aren't really moving out of halls either because the rental market in Canberra isn't great. But you'll still have fun!
On the bright side, I'm moving to UniLodge this year, I'll be in Kinloch (attached to Wurrumbul). So, you'd be in the same building as me! (Yeah, I know, such a redeeming feature, right?) Also, UniLodge fees are much lower this year than they used to be (although if you're in a studio, it'll be fairly expensive), if you are sensible with your purchases (i.e. if you shop at Aldi), I worked out that if you live in a three-share it's cheaper than living at catered Burgmann (though Burgmann is a bit more expensive than Bruce). That's keeping in mind that UniLodge has a longer contract than Burgmann too.
I survive on $25 a week for groceries!
From what I gather, although Warrumbul will be predominantly first years, UniLodge has established itself quite well in the last few years and it enters interhall competitions (though it doesn't win), people seem to enjoy living there and there are still loads of activities, etc. The downside is that at Warrumbul, you can't choose your contract length, it must be 52 weeks long (on the other hand, this is good in that you don't have to move out all your stuff at the end of the year).
There is a high chance of getting studios as well since most UniLodge residents have been demanding more studios and Warrumbul is only just being finished now (it's all brand new) and they built it to respond to that demand for studios. They don't offer many share-flats at all in there (there are some, but the majority of rooms aren't in shared apartments according to the flyer we were given).
-
^^Yeah I'm ok with the idea of being in UniLodge I guess, although I'll have to learn a few easy recipes (so that I'm not surviving off crap...:p). What are the chances of getting rejected from UniLodge, now that they're considering me? That's the greater fear...
-
So if we cook our own food and buy from Aldi are we going to come up roughly even with what we would have paid for a catered hall? I'm trying to make sense of this all.
-
I really couldn't say. But, because they've just opened up Warrambul they have way more rooms than last year, so I think that it's likely you'd get it.
-
The rent for Unilodge is lower than even the self-catered dorms if you share it with someone else. I'm thinking of moving into one of those after I get my bearings at the place.
Eriny, what can you tell me about the music rooms?
-
Cianyx, did you get an offer?
-
Eriny, what can you tell me about the music rooms?
There are music rooms you can use, I believe are top floor of Kinloch (I think it's top floor anyway). Unfortunately you can only use them during office hours (10am-6pm). However, you realistically can practise in your room because the walls are concrete.
So if we cook our own food and buy from Aldi are we going to come up roughly even with what we would have paid for a catered hall? I'm trying to make sense of this all.
It depends on whether you get a studio or if you're sharing.
-
How much worse would it be if we got a studio? I've looked for the prices and how much we'd spend on top of rent is unclear - e.g. I don't know how much the average student spends on utilities/groceries.
How do you get by on $25 a week for groceries?
-
My boyfriend and I buy groceries together and it ends up costing us $100 a fortnight (roughly). That's only after you buy all the staples, like spices and flour and butter and tomato paste such. We eat fairly healthily, meat and vegetables and fruit and such, a lot of pasta and rice though, and a lot of cooking in bulk and freezing it to reheat later. There's a bulk supabarn store out near the airport which is slightly cheaper for most things. You definitely want to factor in more than $25 per week though, because you would still go out for dinner sometimes and sometimes things are more expensive than normal and sometimes you randomly feel like going out for ice-cream or baking some cupcakes.
I don't know the weekly rent off the top of my head, but it's that plus $25 for utilities plus whatever you spend on food. Plus $3 per load of washing (I tend to do washing once every 2-3 weeks, but I have a lot of clothes). Parking at UniLodge is also more expensive if you're bringing a car.
-
OH no!!!
Unilodge is more expensive IMO ($255 @ 52 weeks) and non-catered, Is there anyway to choose different accommodation (I want catered or cheaper accommodation if it is non-catered and a contract length of 40 weeks)
-
Cianyx, did you get an offer?
Not yet. Still being considered for Fenner Hall. Getting worried here
-

The only other option is realistically something off-campus :( Maybe in an apartment block or in a share house.
-
The only other option is realistically something off-campus :( Maybe in an apartment block or in a share house.
So there is no way I can get a room at one of the other colleges (ursula or one of the other catered)
-
I just got an offer for a 6 bedroom apartment at UniLodge Warrumbul - anyone else?
-
I got a single studio for Warrumbul. Really hope that I can do something and get into catered accommodation.
-
I just got an offer for a 6 bedroom apartment at UniLodge Warrumbul - anyone else?
Is that all to your self?
-
Nope - 5 other house mates.
-
Hopefully you don't get one with some sort of chronic diarrhoea.
-
Hopefully you don't get one with some sort of chronic diarrhoea.
I think you might start making him nervous if you continue :P
-
Got a single studio in Warrumbul as well. A mixed blessing, I guess...
-
Just rang up, she told me I was lucky enough to have on campus accommodation, so yeah I agree with the mixed blessing, on one hand you have the independence that comes with fending for yourself (does it show that I haven't really had to cook for myself over prolonged periods of time?) and the pretty expensive price (I wouldn't think so much of it if it was a 40 week agreement, but I'm going to be home as much as possible at least for food). But There are advantages such as a personal toilet/shower and kitchen. and also 'unlimited high speed internet'.
-
Yeah. I don't think it is likely that I will be getting an accomodation offer. Fuck
-
Yeah. I don't think it is likely that I will be getting an accomodation offer. Fuck
Well at least you have the accommodation guarantee. They might still be processing offers or they might not have places left (Although from what I have heard Fenner isn't overly popular compared to on-campus)
I'm starting to see the advantages to UniLodge, although I suspect I won't be so happy when I start eating my own food :(
-
Can I crash your place if I don't get an offer?
-
^^ sure only problem is cost is $10 each time and you are only allowed for 4 days at a time (BTW you're going to be cooking :P)
-
Cooking for yourself everyday really isn't as difficult as it may sound. If you just get a recipe book of quick, healthy meals you can prepare, or just ask your parents how to cook your favourite meals. Cook too much stuff on purpose so then you just need to reheat it in the microwave the next day.
-
I just found out. In terms of accommodation at Fenner, I think I fucked myself over location-wise
-
Oh well, plenty of exercise getting to and from class. :)
-
Jesus Christ. How much do motorbikes cost these days?
-
For a lot of people, their lives? Seriously, get a normal bike. Your daily ride will compensate for your undergraduate binge drinking.
-
Pssh. I'm not a drinker >.>
-
Become one! You'll need to if you're living in Canberra. :P
-

I think on Friday nights I'm going to meander throughout Civic, blitzed off vodka, and pretend I'm in a real city. It could work if you're really, really drunk.
-
I just found out. In terms of accommodation at Fenner, I think I fucked myself over location-wise
But you do have access to the shuttle buses to and from campus as well as grocery runs :)
Motorbikes are going to cost a similar amount to cars, sure it's cheaper initially and fuel consumption is lower but you need tyres and servicing more often etc.
I am also pretty sure it's free parking for cars at fenner.
-
Cars from Fenner can park at Toad Hall. And yeah, shuttle bus works. Really, if you cycle to uni you'd get there fairly quickly.

You may also have to bring along a postcard of New York or something to look at whilst very drunk. Or close your eyes.

Question for those already at ANU:
I am from interstate and am driving upto Canberra for enrolment on the 10th morning (driving up on the 9th). I would need somewhere where I could park for the night. I am wondering what options I have, can you please advise me what is the best way to park my car overnight. I have accommodation at UniLodge Warrambul but cannot justify paying for a months parking.
(I couldn't be bothered typing it up so I copied it from an email)
-
Why are you turning up so early? You don't have to enrol til O week (14th onwards).

There is free parking at the CSIRO Discovery Centre which you can still abuse for now. Still though, as humph said, enrolment isn't until O week?
-
I'm showing up on the 6th for reasons of convenience - how many people will be around then? I'm wondering if I'll rock up to find room mates in my apartment or not.

lists dates for enrolment at Melville hall (Is this not something that is correct?)
Should I call ANU up? Although I must say it's a lot easier getting information from here. So if enrolment is during O-week, is it at melville hall or what happens?
I may as well get into canberra soon though since I am paying for my room from tomorrow, so ben fear not I will join you soon.
A big thanks to Eriny for the advice (and also Humph for correcting about enrolment dates)
-
Strange, I didn't know they were doing that. Anyway, it would be in Melville Hall, yes. And hey, if you want to go to Canberra early, it probably wouldn't be a bad thing. The campus will be fairly desolate until O week though.
-
I got Warrambul as well. We should start a chill out group. Btw, did anyone go to the pre-departure?
-
Yeah I think all ANU VNers should meet up for a drink or something - if that's something everyone would like to do of course.
-
Oh, I went to pre departure, and EZ was there too.
Does anyone know how to tell if lectures are recorded? I've just been on the timetable generator, and the first year maths lectures clash with both 2nd year physics subjects running in 1st semester... which does not look good.
In addition, does anyone know what microeconomics entails? Is it mathsy? Considering taking it in first semester...
-
Microeconomics is small scale economics. Stuff that happens within a country. It's not really hardcore maths. I was like 40 mins late to the pre dep. Missed out on the first person
-
Hmm, I know what microeconomics is, but I was just wondering what it involved at 1st year level.
You didn't miss too much. I don't think I saw who you were... but then again, I spent most of the time with the 10 or so people I knew at the evening...
-
I'm the dude in the black shirt
-

I'm up for it. Anyone else?
Also, I was the one who asked the question about Warrumbul, if that helps.

They'll almost certainly be recorded. Almost every lecture is recorded, especially for the bigger courses like first year maths. The only problem is if you need to watch the lecturer do calculations on the board or something.
People who are commerce students think that micro 1 is mathsy but maths students don't really. It involves solving linear equations and reading off graphs. It does get more mathsy in later years though. I don't have any personal experiences in uni economics though, it's all anecdotal.

Pick me, pick me !!!

Yeah I just checked on Wattle (as I tutored MATH1115 last year) and there are lecture recordings. More important for maths though is that lecture notes are put up online. Other than first year subjects, very few maths and physics (and science in general) courses are recorded, but usually lecture notes are available online. But yeah, don't worry about the clash too much, just concentrate on the subjects that you find hardest.
And as eriny said, micro doesn't really have much maths involved. This is because doing methods in yr12 isn't a prereq for economics at ANU, unlike most other Go8 unis, so they have to dumb it down a bit in first year.

Have you done or do you know anyone doing eco at ANU? I'm considering dping some economics as well, but I wouldn't start until 2nd semester 1st year at the earliest. Would it be worthwhile to do micro A then, or better to do it Sem 1 in 2nd year? And also, how mathsy are the 2nd years courses for eco (since I'm interested in doing something with a bit of maths in it that isn't actually maths...).
-
I haven't done econ (really, I haven't done anything but maths since first year...) but I have a couple of friends who do it. But I'm pretty sure micro 1 and macro 1 are available in both semesters as lots of (stupid) people fail it the first time and have to do it the next semester. Second year econ courses tend to start having a bit of maths in it (such as game theory in micro 2, though obviously throughout there's always a bit of simple calculus being thrown around). There's also maths for economists subjects as second year, but they're more maths and less economics (they're basically the same as MATH1115 and MATH1116 but mildly applied).
-
What was pre-departure, was it something that I should have attended?
"Hey, I heard ANU was a pretty cool place"
To all Warrambulfags, the room is quite badass indeed
-
Could you show us some pictures? :3
-
Okay. But my room is a little retarded.
-
Don't bother if it's a worry. :P We'll find out soon enough anyway.
-

Most certainly, so Cianyx what happened to Fenner? Did they run out of space as well?
-
Yeah. Got moved to Warrambul
My room is retarded in that it is on an angle. It differs to the normal room which is a long rectangular one as mine is sort of irregularly shaped
-
How's your view? Apparently, I'll get a lovely view of a wall when I move in.
-
Was hoping to get the room next to mine. If I turn my head slightly, I get the view of a mountain.
-

It's on an angle? As in, if there was no friction you'd be sliding down? o_O
-
I meant triangle sort of. My kitchen joins in with my study in a rectangular shape but my bedroom is triangular
-
Ahhh right - kind of excited to see what mine is like now...
-
I can't wait, a few days left
-
Yay! ANU soon! When's everyone going up? I'm driving up on the 12th... it's going to be a longggg trip.
-
I'm going to stay up there from the 12th as well
-
I've been up there since the 6th. I love this place.
-
I'm already here. Direct all booty calls to room 248
-
Me, chansthename and his friend are watching TV in my room. They've gone up to their room to pack some things, but in half an hour we might knock on your door. :P Is that OK?
You're in Warrumbul, right?
-
Jah
-
We'll be around in approximately 20. :P
-
How are the kitchens? I've heard wonderful things
I think it was Bruce House thougb
-
I'm already here. Direct all booty calls to room 248
'good evening sir, I'm here for a random drugs check, do you mind if I come in?'

Wasn't. My. Idea.... XD

>:(
-
I just realised I never received any enrolment details or anything. Should I be concerned? I know that my course acceptance went through (I've been getting emails from the PhB people), and I know I have accommodation, but apart from that I know absolutely nothing.
-
^ Ugh. Tell me about it. I haven't been given the papers to enrol in honours yet :(
Not a worry. If you visit Melville Hall during O week, you should be able to enrol (after waiting in line for some time). They have course advisors and such there and then they send you over to Chifley to do all the filling out questions stuff. Have your tax file number with you. You could possibly even enrol now if you go over to the Pauline Griffin Building (I'm not sure).
-
Didn't you get sent a package containing enrolement details?
-
EZ, you so eeeaaa-sy
-
^ Cianyx, I believe that you're the only 1st year on here who I haven't met (:
-
You live on the other side of the Uni though =[
-
Yeah, I do, but I was actually over at UniLodge today xD
-

Out of curiousity, what courses are people doing?
-
None :) PhD has no coursework. But I am tutoring MATH1115 (again). Fun times.
-
MATH1115 has so many matrices...
I'm doing maths, chemistry, microeconomics and physics :)
-
Foundations of Australian Law
Torts
Sociology
Intermediate French (considering a move to advanced, I'm not feeling challenged at all.)
-
A bunch of stuff... a lot of which is over my head as usual :]
Anyway anyone wanna do a VN meetup.. ya know when you're all settled in?
-
Yeah, sure. Would a weekend work best for most people?
-
weekend is good :)
I'm doing 2 seminar courses.
-
Finance 101, Econ 101, Busn 101, Stat 108.
As you can imagine, life is pretty swell atm
-
What does the ANU Law Faculty primarily focus on?
-
If by focus you mean specialise, the Law faculty is renowned for its International Law programs. If you want to know the course structure, see: http://studyat.anu.edu.au/programs/4103XBARTS;study_options.html (this is for arts/law, but unless you're a nutjob aiming for straight Law then you can just replace the arts subs with whatever other degree you'd do with law.)
-
At appianway's request, I would like to confirm that I am willing to go to this meetup. Also, I am doing English first year, Philosophy 2nd year and Classics 1st year - cbf finding subject names for now, but if you're interested I'll post them!
-
If this is a general question thread, then I'm curious as to whether ASCs are taken in place of a course each semester (in the PhB program) i.e. you take 3 courses and 1 ASC per semester. Or is it in addition to your courses? Also, is there coursework during honours? Are there graduate-level subjects (specifically, physics and math)?
Thanks

It depends. At least three of your ASCs have to be stand-alones, where you do an ASC as a whole course instead of a fourth course that semester. The remaining three (usually in 1st or 2nd year uni) can be add-ons, where you do a fourth course as normal, but part (or all, for PhB Arts) of your assessment is from additional work in the form of an ASC report.
Similarly with coursework - it depends on the discipline. In maths, half your honours workload is coursework (so you do a total of four courses over your honours year). You get to choose the four 3rd/4th year courses or special topics courses that you want to do. Note that in the maths department, these are pretty much the same as graduate courses; the only difference is the assessment.
For physics, you do around 5 courses in first semester, then second semester is purely for working on your thesis. The courses are specific honours courses, and all the other students in those courses are honours students.
-
^ Thanks, is there a list of the available special topics courses somewhere?
-
No, the special topics courses are decided the first week of semester, so you can't really know in advance (unless you speak to someone ahead of time, maybe). You don't have to do special topics courses if you don't want to, though, you can just do some of the third/fourth year courses: http://maths.anu.edu.au/study/undergraduate/MathematicsHandbook/thirdYear.html
For physics, it's different: http://physics.anu.edu.au/education/honours/honours_courses2011.php
