Happy thread yo. :D
I'm bringing happy back. All you forum goers don't know how to act.
I'm sure you've noticed the "Recent Posts" forum component down the bottom of the main page. It's accessible and user friendly. I like it, good work!
EDIT: Voice your opinion about anything FSN related. Cyber attacking someone results to me e-bashing you. :D

Mmhmm. *gets pen and paper*

Too much bullshit around here though!
:D
Yeah, someone else now.

"Show new replies to your posts."

Thanks, it's in-built to SMF but I forgot to enable it when we initially set up the forum :P
"Show new replies to your posts."

Yeah, that's my favourite. I rarely browse the board itself, instead resorting to the "Show unread posts since last visit" and "Show new replies to your posts" features ;D

t'would be good to be able to see the reasons for *all* karma changes, not just the ones concerning ourselves

Err... yeah, except I've taken advantage of the personal privacy and left some personal comments.
I think karma should be restarted, or completely wiped.

I should write more in my posts, but I'll just get to the point:
I agree.
-
get rid of karma system, serves no purpose at all other than to cause in fighting
-
Yeah I agree. Some people take take karma too srsly jeez. :p
-
Hmmm, the reason I support the karma system is that when this site gets big, it will be a really nice way of determining who is respected among the community. But yes, it is flawed. What do you guys think we should do to fix the problem?

I don't think the Karma system is necessary.
You could remove it or leave it there to rot.
Rotting stuff looks and smells bad.
-
I advocate leaving the karma system intact, and with these conditions.
*50+ posts (already implemented)
*reasons revealed publicly, to ensure transparency. We don't need more "suspected communist" karmas, or "because i can lolololol" kind of karmas. It will serve to separate people, and with public reasons we can get rid of shit karma.
*I don't like the 12 hr karma. Maybe 12hr karma separating karma'ing the same person, but not 1 per person per 12 hrs.
*WIPE THE KARMA SLATE CLEAN!
-
Yo wazzap in the drizzle my nizzle ;) I want to pump my furshizzle in my krizzle so I can pimp out in my set of modded wheelz homie. LOL
-
Okay, I think wiping karma clean and starting over might be the best idea and seems to have a lot of support. I'll get on it.
-
... That is, Daniel will get right on it. :P (there's no visible option for a reset :()

can't you just disable the whole system
i post on a richmond supporters forum which also uses SMF and they don't have a karma system
-
I've already stated my reasons for wanting it, it just needs to be made a little more stringent is all. :)

:D Awesome feedback right there.

there is a handy reputation system over on yellowandblack.info (i think?)
whereby you can give points to people who are good contributers, in that way you can show who are the more respectale members on this forum

..it's already like this

I believe the karma system should be used to indicate whether or not a post was useful, therefore as a moderation tool. We should develop a policy, visible to everyone but enforced by moderators, to ensure that karma is used for that purpose (that is, the reason provided is specific to the post and not the person).
If the karma system was used for this person I don't see any reason why the karma change log shouldn't be made available to users. It would provide a way to gauge who provides good input/posts, rather than who is most respected.
-
Something like ebay where you can retract negative karma?
Or for that matter positive ones??
-
I don't really like the idea of making reasons public. Shouldn't we be able to trust each other enough to use the karma system responsibly, given the already stringent conditions?
I like costargh's idea of retracting bad karma ebay-style.
-
People can't be trusted - take maxleng as an example.

too true, that guy was an absolute troll on BoS
-
Trial and error.
The Karma system's been trialled and you guys have found errors in it (the way it's been used).
Everyone seems to have settled down with it, so I think it's best to wipe it now and start over with genuine karma. ;)
-

I'll get right on it, as soon as I remember where the cPanel/other server admin panel is on this server :P
You need to reset it in the database, there's no admin option for it.
-
I guess its been cleared.
-
Maybe individual posts could be rated?
-
Maybe individual posts could be rated?
That was my point. Did you read my message above? :)
-
I'm hoping my "publicly reveal reasons for karma" suggestion is debated a bit more. Otherwise, this same problem of random karma, smiting etc. will continue.
Otherwise, propose a better system in which we do not rely on people to do the right thing (as maxleng shows, this can't be trusted. Even our "good" mod brendan has baselessly accused me of being a communist in a smiting.
-
New system to be implemented:
- Everyone gets 1 karma to give out PERIOD per day to whomever they please.
- Negative karma is removed.
- Total transparency for karma givings and their reasons.
-
You can't smite people - only offer positive karma.
-
might as well just get rid of it all really

That works. For what it's worth, you have my support.

The point of karma is to identify the most beneficial contributors (and the negative karma those that troll or act stupid repeatedly).
I reserve my opinions about the 1 karma straight limit. But at least the system above prevents abuse of the karma system. The joke of smiting people repeatedly for fun is wearing off, I just want to see a system that works, for the objective it is designed to achieve.
-
- Negative karma is removed.
Negative totally removed, or use a karma total rather than the separate +ve and -ve?
I think we should change it so there's only the one karma total, but keep it so that people can still subtract from someone's karma (as marpick said, for trolls or whatever) :)

can you have a stockpile of karma points so that you can hand out multiple ones within say 12 hours

Like quota/credit? Perhaps the quota/credit is determined based on the user's status. That is, Hero Members get more credit than Jr. Members.

yeah something along those lines. like say you weren't online for a couple of days, instead of coming back and only having 1 point you have maybe 5 points over the period of time you were away
-
hey marpick is there a typo in your profile, your age reads 1997 lol :crazy2:
-
That's not the only thing that's wrong. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
-
He, I mean, she did that on purpose. :coolsmiley:
-
^^^ She, I mean, he is trying to deceive you. :P
-
I like the changes although I don't know about karma points rolling on to the next day because say if you dont go on the site for a couple of weeks you can potentially just have lots of karma points ... basically just throwing them away at mediocre posts which does not fulfil the role of the karma system. However I think either more karma for more functioning members or an increased limit would be better than just 1 karma point
-
... It wouldn't work like that.
-
The point of karma is to identify the most beneficial contributors (and the negative karma those that troll or act stupid repeatedly).
Why do we need karma to tell us who are the most beneficial contributors??
-
We don't, but it saves people scouring threads to pick out the useful contributors from the riff-raff that postwhore with useless or stupid posts but gain exposure in the process.
It could also be a pseudo-reward of sorts, if you have a good karma.
-

lmaoizzle okizzzle.. rightizzle ;)
I wonder if we could have more skins like 3 or 4 to choose from..

See any good ones that'd suit the site? Please feel free to suggest them :)

Thirded. I don't see total transparency yet either (for example: can't see the reasons of brendan's karma changes, so that I can judge for myself how his karma describes his reputation).
-
I said new system TO BE implemented. It hasn't been implemented yet, I want to see thoughts. :P I moved to single figure karma for a trial. I still have reservations about transparency, but okay, I'll give it a whirl for a few days.
Note: I'm not removing negative karma because we moved to a single karma figure.
-
Transparency is up! :)
Karma probably needs no more tweaks, IMO. If it shall be tweaked, there must be careful consideration whether the tweaks will retain the same goal as this current system does (providing a sound system of reputation, while allowing individuals to judge for themselves whether other people's Karma ratings are justified).
-
I'm not sure if this is the right place to put it (or in a new thread) but you could make a debate forum. =)
Just because a lot of the rants seem to actually be debates and I'm used to another game where they have a separate rant and debate forum xD
