I tend to wake up at 6:30 and have brekky at 7:10 so 7am fits in nicely between those xD
Don't know if I'll wake up early or not go to sleep at all yet, probably will decide that next weekend :)

Heh :P
I tend to wake up at any time between 10:00 and 12:00, I'm not the type of person to get up early (getting up at 7:30 AM when we had school was hard enough :P)

I'm getting it via text message - the alert sound on my phone will make me up when the message is received :)

7AM. Usually I'd say that I'd wake up early just to get my results but I'm so jet lagged that lately I've been waking up at 5AM everyday. So I'll be awake to get them regarless probably. I plan to get on the internet at 6:30 or so, even though I've signed up for the SMS alert.

your lucky though, even if you bomb out on one you've got 5 subjects next year so the one yo bombed out won't matter lol

No, but he has to work hard to ensure he doesn't bomb out in any. :P

I'm trying to pull an all-nighter, but I'll probably set the alarm for 6am and wait until 6:45am.

i guess so, but compare costargh's position to mine.

i did 2 last year and 4 this, so i had to do well on everything essentially, but semi-bombed out on R&S

Costargh has the slight benefit of 'if' he bombs one this year he can cover it next year, or 'if' he does really well on both this year but bombs one next year that subject will be covered

I know I havent done well in Methods but I dont really care. I just want a 25 but I dont think I got that. I really am not going to speculate further however Id rather 4 subjects in the 40's over 6 subjects around 37 so I'd like to to hope that Legal is a 40+ this year
Sorry 4 hijakng.

I hope the site doesnt crash when everyones trying to get their results

Umm, Whats with all the ~~ for? ??

Well according to WHOIS, vcaa uses Webcentral Servers which have dedicated servers, So I think it'll be ok.

Some jackasses always think it's funny to DDoS the servers at 7am in addition to the heavy load as well. That is probably why it has a high chance to crash.

I hate those DDoS f**kers GRR! LOL

Don't they have DDoS protection anywho? Like Proxleic http://www.prolexic.com/
Title: Re: December 17th

Hmm... I wouldn't know. How does "protection" work anyway? It might leave out legitimate users too.

Post by: reg on December 10, 2007, 11:09:20 am
Hmm... I wouldn't know. How does "protection" work anyway? It might leave out legitimate users too.
Well, it varies, but generally once traffic "flooding" starts to occur, traffic matching certain rules starts being diverted from a path directly to the server, but to a network/series of appliances that are dedicated to filtering "bad" traffic from the legitimate, and forwarding what is left.

In the end, traffic may take longer to arrive than usual, but no flooding will reach the score server.

VCAA had a tendency to slow down like crazy during exam period, I doubt that was due to attacks as much as it was to poor hosting (lol, it's colocated with VELS and probably a bunch of other doe crap.
Title: Re: December 17th

Why wouldn't they just fix it? Cost?
Title: Re: December 17th
Post by: Collin Li on December 10, 2007, 11:15:49 am
Yeah, reg, thanks for that. You're probably right, poor hosting may be the case.

Why wouldn't they just fix it? Cost?

I think you're misunderstanding the problem. It's not about something that's broken. A DDoS is just when there is a malicious intent behind a large flow of internet traffic used to distract the servers. This can slow down the servers, and essentially shut down the web-operation of the server. It doesn't break anything, but while the DDoS attack is happening, web-servers will be occupied with useless signals from non-legitimate users, blocking out possible legitimate users from accessing the website.
Title: Re: December 17th
Post by: costargh on December 10, 2007, 11:24:48 am
Oh but I mean... like isn't the usual problem just that of a high level of legitimate traffic? And if that is the case isn't it just a case of getting a better server or something?
Title: Re: December 17th
Post by: Collin Li on December 10, 2007, 11:33:21 am
Oh. Yeah, if it's a high level of legitimate traffic, you need a way to spread out the peak (like what we suspect UoM does), or do something like "we will release the results at some random time in between 12am to 12pm." I'm not sure if that would actually reduce the load. I reckon it would be enough of a disincentive to reduce peak traffic :)

What they do now is pretty good (have the results posted out, and have SMS service), which also spreads the load.

The final resort would be to increase the capabilities of the server, but this is costly.

This tends to be the best solution. In WoW, new server announcements are made in the fashion of "We will open the server on >this< date", and it works well. One time they gave an exact time, and the server crashed shortly (<5 minutes) after coming up.

Perhaps give an incentive to use other services, make SMS free or allow emails to be sent, whatever.

Do you reckon it's a "proper" colocated server, or a machine sitting in someone's office? I've always imagined the server as an old office PC nobody's using any more, but maybe that's just me? :P

Edit: Anyone have any clue what this is for:

Came across it today :P

That DDoS protection stuff is expensive :P

Speaking of DDoS, this was from a while ago (a DoS, not DDoS... DDoS is from multiple machines):

:o I've just realised something
as much as I'm scared as hell about results, in a way I can't wait so that I can give my school the finger =D for like, not knowing who I am, never giving me academic prizes at assembly etc.
Like, near the start of this year the head of the senior school asked me if I was new to the school because he hadn't seen me before x_x and the head of campus has never addressed me by name so I don't know if he knows me either xD

and despite what enter I actually get, if it happens the feeling of owning most of their favourites would be awesome :D

And I've heard of VASS, but can't remember what it is. There are too many stupid acronyms for teachers. (one I can remember is PLT = principles of teaching and learning. no, there is no mistake in the order of letters on my part :P)

I think VASS is the computer program that the VCE administrator at each school enters the results (SACs and SATs) to be forwarded onto VCAA.

I think I'll check at 8.30am-ish. Cos at 7am everyones gonna be asking everyone what they got blahblahblah so I'm gonna check when that's died down and I can cry in peace without ppl bugging me :P

She likes the sympathy and attention she gets from people after saying "Oh i'm going to do crap". It's nice to hear people say, "OMG NO YOU'LL DO AWESOME!" - so she's conditioned herself into such behaviour that if she acts dejected and fearful of her marks, people will boost her confidence for her. It's really nothing more than a pathetic attention grab.

Or the fear could be real. Lots of smart people fear these sorts of events because in the extremely unlikely event that it goes badly, their sense of self is jeopardised. I mean, if you're seen as the "smart kid" all your life, there's lots of external and internal pressure to succeed because not doing so could expose you as a 'fake' and render you 'talentless' (especially if all your success is in academics) in your own mind. That can be very scary.

was originally aiming to get into med but screwing up the UMAT has taken a lot of pressure if that makes any sense. now im gunning for biomed so there is no longer a massive pressure to score a high 99. still nervous times ahead though :'(

Thanks for that wonderful insight into my mind, enwiabe. *clap*

Or maybe I'm under a shitload of pressure from family and friends - many of whom already have children with high 99 scores - and thus traditional "Asian pride" dictates that I need to achieve similar scores or risk my parents' disappointment and shame. It's not a nice feeling watching your parents avoid the issue of VCE when speaking to friends because they are ashamed of your ENTER score.

As well as the fact that I'm the only person who knows how shit I really went on my exams and thus it's incredibly frightening when friends tell me they expect me to dux the school, or whatever.

i.e. what Eriny said, lol.

Yeh gotta agree that I hate people who say that you're going to get highest in the class for example and all of a sudden there is pressure on you to achieve that or else look like a failure.

However I don't think people who are genuinely smart, study effectively and come out of an exam saying "I failed" are being quite honest with themselves.

Seriously, I'd cop the shame of a 99 any day, because at my rate I'm going nowhere near that.

Pffft. Last night my parents go to me ... we don't really mind if you get 80 or 99.95, as long as you get into Med or Law :)

Thanks mum and dad, that makes me feel so much better ...

Oh, and my dad's overseas now, but he organised with his company so that he can back just in time for my results. grrrrrrrrrr

Mummy, I'm scarreeddd, VCE results in 4 days!

I'm only getting two study scores, not my ENTER, can't imagine how you guys are feeling.

I'm only getting one and I've been having nightmares about it :S Crazy.

thats quite sad... why worry about something that you cant change? if you tried your best then thats all you can do, if you didnt then you deserve a bad mark

Look:
http://vcaaresults.vic.edu.au/

the site is up and running. but you can't login yet. but i think the VCAA and VTAC peoples have already finished all the calculations and stuff.

I entered my details to confirm my login details. but this is what it says:

The student number or PIN you have entered is not valid.

Student number

    * If you do not know your student number, contact your school immediately.

PIN

    * If you have not applied through VTAC this year your PIN is the first 4 digits of your date of birth (e.g. a date of birth of 7 January would translate to a PIN of 0701).
    * If you have applied through VTAC this year click here

Note: If you fail to enter valid details in 3 successive attempts, your account will be locked and will remain locked for 3 minutes.

Anyone else got a similar thing?

Everyone's results are done end of story, and there's pieces of paper at school sitting there with your name on them
I'm not sure how much those in power know. I know they know who failed subjects, but not sure what else at this stage. Sunday is when teachers find out stuff

BIG EDIT - I get that message too when checking ENTER result. When checking study scores, you get Prav's message

Because VCAA/VTAC just don't want to release it, lol.

Monday is a bit of a sleep-in day (for me, every day is a sleep-in day).

Perhaps they hope traffic will be less if people sleep in.

I don't know 0=)
I'd assume it's because they factor in extra time in case people are late doing something, something screws up, they are late delivering things to schools etc. *wonders if gantt/pert charts were an overlapper b/w IS and bus man*
