I use MySpace, and I must say I hate it! The site is slow, buggy, ugly, etc. The list goes on - it's a great site to communicate with friends and meet people, however.

I tried signing up to Facebook to see what it's like, but:

a) my high school isn't available and under 18s have to join a high school network.

b) none of my friends use it.

Perhaps when it comes to Uni I will use it.

There's a good reason Facebook wins: usability. Look at your typical* MySpace profile and it's a visual monstrosity. The background is either flashing pink and yellow or it's an annoying tiled image. The font colour is nearly always too similar to the background so it's hard to look at. Plus you usually have five videos playing at once on someone's profile, as well as their favourite song. Combined with a custom cursor, spam consisting of "GET YOUR FREEEE iPHONE!" and "OMFG THANKS FOR THE ADD!!!!1!1111111", content that flows over the sides of the page so the whole visual layout is screwed up, and a cheesy profile picture and you've got a Web 2.0 disaster.

</rant>

* some people actually make their profiles readable, but most do not.

They're both good in their own way. The Facebook site itself is a lot better, and their developer API is awesome (it allows programmers like myself to write custom applications for it, and then users can add these applications to their profile). Their architecture was planned out much better (rather than the mess that MySpace maintains at the moment - Their new C#/ASP.NET code mashed into old, rotting ColdFusion code)

However, I use MySpace more, mainly because "everyone" uses it. I've got about 50 friends on Facebook, compared to 230 on MySpace. :P
And one thing about MySpace is they give you more freedom (you may insert your own HTML). Sure, a lot of people use this for "evil" (ugly, ugly MySpace pages), but it can be used for good purposes. As an example, I'm working on a layout that hides everything on the page and replaces it with totally different content (via <div>s).

Add me if you like?

Note that Facebook apps are third party; they're not developed by Facebook themselves.

hmm i did use both, but i kind of abandoned my myspace :P they have too many errors and plus facebook is really fun with all the applications u can add to play games and such :) plus superpoke RULES :D

plus with facebook i suppose you have more privacy, like only people from the same network as you can view your profile unless you choose for nobody from those networks to, and then when you add/accept people i like that you can restrict what they can see :) better than myspace for sure

oh and yeh i joined up the FSN facebook group :)

Yeah, Facebook is awesome like that :D. It's easy to write apps for it, I've written a simple app so far (an app to embed Flash animations on your profile) :)

Oh, and look at my MySpace: http://myspace.com/daniel_1515
I completely redid the layout, this time hiding all the default MySpace stuff and completely redoing the layout so it's all nice and clean. It's kinda incomplete, and I'm a coder not a designer, but IMO it's still better than a lot of MySpace profiles :P

You must provide your full name.

I'm trying to sign up (like i said I would never do, wheee) but it won't let me name myself mel, mel mel, princess mel or mel the queen =/
Can people see your surname when you sign up, so if I put something generic like smith or jones it will be all good?

i dont see what the problem is with giving your first and last name, after all you just choose what privacy settings you want, so that people even though they are in the same school/uni/country network as you are cant see your profile. until they add you of course :)

it just seems more mature?.. especially when you dont see people with ridiculous capitals n stuff like if i did this: "eAn weI Hu@Ng" :P just gets rid of the annoying names like that

It's just because I don't want people I don't know in RL (or RL related things) knowing my surname, especially seeing as most of my friends I only know on the internet. Back in the day you weren't supposed to give out personally identifiable information, and the fact that I know on this site I have said enough for someone to work out exactly who I am if they tried is bordering on the edge of what I don't like.
And it's just that I don't trust people I don't know very well. There could be stalkers out there :o

Post by: huangers on November 17, 2007, 03:18:48 pm
ah well you make a fair point, :P then again if friends want to search for you they wont be able to find you. ahah

if you are asian like myself just use a generic last name (sorry if this is your actual last name :P): Lee, Chan, Wong, etc.

then again you could just go for the old John Smith type :P haha

Yes, I do understand my About Me is way too long, I'll shorten it sometime soon.

Speaking of MySpace, anyone seen how the homepage looks different depending on what country you choose? Click "MySpace International" at the bottom of the page and try it :P
MySpace Japan looks way different:

French is slightly different (the "Control Panel" on the left is formatted differently):

MySpace.cn is a separate website, accounts on the normal MySpace don't work on it. It's run by a different company, inside China (the main MySpace is owned by News Corp / Fox). Supposedly, search results, messages, comments, etc. are censored in China
