Is double-degree worth doing?
Yea it may increase ur employment opportunity after graduate..
but it will cost u one year more..
what do u guys think??
i am deciding whether to do a double-degree course at caufield.
-
why do you think of it as 'costing you one year'?
-
becoz normally it takes 4 years to finish a double-degree course??
comparing to single degree courses that only take 3 years
am i right..i'm not sure that's why i'm seeking help here..
-
dude, for ONLY one extra year you have two degrees. if you had done them separatelly it would take 6 rather than 4 years. you get two qualifications in a short amount of time. but if course, you will need to be interested in both degrees you will be persuing. i mean, there is no point gaining a qualification if it is of no interest to you.

having a double degree means higher education and better job oppurtunities and more experience in your field

this is true. i want to do nursing/midwifery because i will have two qualifications and i will be a more diverse and knowledgeable healthcare professional. im sure an extra degree in commerce would be well worth doing in the bigger scheme of things. its a compedative world out there. one must use every opportunity available to them in order to stay ahead of the pack. what degree were you thinking of doing in conjunction with this?

um..accounting/banking and finance..:)

Maybe I can shed some light on this... sure a double degree will give you 2 degrees instead of 1 and it will open up more job opportunities.. but bare this in mind, some degrees not all, will be limited when combined with another degree, say for example the course I was completing at VU, thanks to the combination of accounting/banking and finance, I could not be be a licenced chartered accountant, due to the very fact that thanks to the double degree I was not able to complete taxation and auditing, two rather important accounting subjects. So that's something to consider when deciding on whether or not you want to complete a double degree... Hope that helped a little :D
-
The double degree i might to commerce/law takes 5 year :( ouch lol 23 when i graduate

this is a good point. i wouldnt have thought of that. but your right, a double degree does sometimes take up electives and other such subjects. i guess you have to decide what your dream career is and then from there work out what you need to get there and if a double degree will make you look more appealing to an employer. or you could just do it for the fun of it. check what qualifications you can get from this double degree. :)
haha education is a completelly random and different course. go for it if thats what you want. why dont you hunt around for a double degree that includes teaching?

Dazza this should be useful:

Hope it helps clarify things :D

"do it for fun"..that makes much sense to me..
i might just stick with the subject that i think i will enjoy at then..
a lot easier doing it this way..:)

O_O omg lol...
I might do an honors year... is there even one for accounting? (don't know)
But finishing at 26/27 my goodness, almost as bad as my cousin he's like 30 something and STILL at Uni... but he's special... in the sense he's conducting heart research methods, and creating his own methods [in america]... on a scholarship anyways... if only I were that smart lol... >_>
-
^
But in the end it will be all worth it, being able to be a mathematician or work my way up to a professor at university.
-
I plan to be at uni all my life :)

I'll most likely be there for all my life too.

You two sound like my uncle, he's like 55 and still doing courses at uni, currently completing a Masters in Communication and Media or something >_> I think I'd die ... although I do plan on coming back to uni at some point in my life, later on most likely when I'm around 50 or possibly when I retire.

The big difference between me and your uncle would be that I would be teaching instead of being taught. 8 years of uni courses would set me up for many, many years of teaching.
-
I want to work... Not be stuck in uni all my life. :S
-
Why are you people so eager to get out of Uni as soon as you can? Double degrees are awesome, because you are well regarded when you enter the workforce. This means you reach higher positions such as executive or whatever much quicker then someone with a normal single degree.
While this is not applicable at all times, it is for most.
Hence by spendind 1 extra year, you are pretty much taking a short cut in terms of getting a job position which u wud have fought 5 years for.

LOL! He taught at RMIT and Deakin for 10 years :P, then moved to work with SBS and then that News station Al-jazeera (however it's spelt), he's just doing something to pass the time I think, might move back into media again...

Maybe because I want to be working... and not studying for most of my life (that's just me), despite my thirst for knowledge, I do want to start a family one day, the bills wont pay themselves :P...

No. Your chances of earning more in a shorter time increases! Hence giving you more time!
And besides ask any adult, they hate working they cherished their uni-study days.
-
Double Degrees are useless in Finance in my opinion. Having double majors (eg. Acc/Fin) will is more than enough that employers are looking for. You will have a shorter degree and start earning higher salaries much faster than Double degree graduates lol.

Prav's reply... is exactly what I was going to say hehe...
Oh and in my case it wouldn't get me far... I want to be a CA and I can't be one if I continued the Double Degree :P (Mind you it was 3 years as well as the single degree)..

If I do a double degree, that means I'm 22 when I graduate... And then I'd probably do a year of Honours on top of that, so I would be 23 anyways. :) (Effectively, I'm in uni for 6 years if I do a double degree... But I think the positive aspects far outweigh the negatives in terms of job prospects...)

Just keep this in mind....
Accreditation
Australian: This degree with relevant units is recognised by the following legal entities:
* Australian Securities and Investments Commission
* Banking, Finance and Securities Industries
* CPA Australia
* Financial Product Adviser
* The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia
Professional recognition may be dependent upon work experience requirements and the correct choice of units.
It's a good course, but be careful when choosing the units that you'll study. Good luck :D
-
double degrees are definitely worthwhile if the courses you are taking complement each other, or enrich the other, in my opinion. it also shows greater breadth, which may be desired in the workplace. or i just made that up. either way.

Well obviously the more you know, the better it is for you, it'll open up more job opportunities for you.
-
Ill be finished by the time I'm 22, I'm still undecided on postgraduate studies though.

I don't think thats true. Double degrees if anything, increase the probability that you will actually be employed. Once you are employed, I don't think it will have much affect on your career progression.

What you should do is ask the faculty, they should know what would be the correct choice of units, or you could go one step further and ask the instituition/association you'd like to be a member of... :) Good luck
