Title: An e-mail from my English teacher- results
Post by: costargh on December 16, 2008, 02:59:12 am
This is an e-mail sent to me from my English teacher.
Brought a smile to my face when I read it! Its so kind and sincere.   :-[

Quote
Dear Costa,

Congratulations! I am absolutely thrilled. You well deserve that score
because you were willing to take my advice and act on it. I knew you would
do it and you have made me very, very, proud of you. You got the highest in
my two classes of English. I do not know the results of the other English
classes because we are only given the results of our own classes. Your TER
score is fantastic! I do hope you get what you want.
Thank you for thinking of me and informing me about your results. You are
the only student who has kept in contact. It is very thoughtful of you to
think of meeting me and giving me a token of appreciation. Do not worry
about that, your email and thanks are more valuable than anything else.It
certainly shows your sincerity and appreciation. You have the making of a
true gentleman. Do not change who you are, Costa, be yourself and pursue
your dreams. You will certainly go very far in life. A teacher is blest with
stars like you, once in a blue moon and I was truly blessed by having you as
a student. You kept the discussions going and gave me hope.

I wish you God's blessings for a bright and happy future. Thanks for your
essay on identity and belonging. I will certainly use it next year.

Regards,

Name Suppressed

It's all over! *tear*

Aww. That's so sweet.

Part of the reason why I was so happy to be dux last year was because it gave me an opportunity to publicly thank my teachers, though I gave them all Christmas cards (with an actual thoughtful message in there) the day after results.

The kind words of teachers have helped me lots. In terms of confidence, but also their kind references got me into my degree. When I visited my old school the other day, my lit teacher was saying that she used my essays from last year to teach this year's class, that she would be lost without them. That was really good to know :)

A slab?

Nah, it depends on what sort of teacher they are. Bottles of alcohol are very potential gifts tho. Wine, bourbon or beer depends who they are.

Flowers/wine/chocolates for females

Alco/books/anything for males.

Probs favourite author, you would expect someone to own their favourite book...

Or a book regarding your subject in some different aspect or view.

I should have bought something for my Maths teacher... but I didn't :( Isn't having me as a student rewarding enough? :P I would have no idea what to get him though... maybe when my sister graduates next year, I'll tell her to give him a gift from me... better late than never, could be from the both of us ;D

What do you give to math teachers though? They always seem to be so distant. They never talk about literature, so books are out of the question. Or... perhaps, a math book might be ok? Or perhaps that might seem pretentious or patronising :/
Don't know about walking around the school with alcohol either :/

Lol I have no idea, I mean this teacher was different, he never seemed distant, and he helped me through so much, but what does one buy for their maths teacher? the state of the art calculator? :P
Nah.. my teacher never believed in calculators...

*thinks* maybe some book about maths jokes? I'm sure he'd understand them, seeing he's going for his phD soon..
Sounds a bit lame though, hmmm...
Any suggestions?

That's good! You need as much exposure as you can get (especially to grasp the difficult concepts)... But in the exam, there is little reference needed, so I guess it's best to latch onto the themes, and then see which ones are the most important and which ones are most likely adaptable to exam questions. Good luck with it, I've no doubt you will get 40+! ;)

why do you find it boring? it's a very well written and interesting book that explores the struggles William Thornhill encounters. recommend it to every one. I would think that this would be the perfect novel to use in the exam?

well, most novels explore the 'struggles' that people face. in that regard it is no different form any other fictional novel. however, if you like it and think it will aid you in attaining top marks in the exam then by all means study it! i'm just pretty amazed that she read it 6 times..!

was it really that interesting? it details a man's poverty stricken life in london, his deportation to australia, and his encounters with aborigines and the moral/ethical dilemmas he faces as a result. yes, australia has had to deal with the horrifying consequences history has had in regards to the treatment of aborigines etc. idk but it just doesn't seem like ..anything new. i mean most films/books/documentaries about this issue all revolve around the same thing, hence why i didn't find it all that exciting.

yeh heaps of ppl in my year found it boring too? I dont get it

I think I was one of the very very few people who actually enjoyed reading it lol. I actually found hard times boring which many others loved :S

And yeah it was great to use in exam! You could talk about Australia's past history and mention Kevin Rudd's 'sorry' speech etc. The crucible was also awesome to use for that prompt.

I loved TSR and would read it 1000000000 more times! The way we perceive Thornhill's emotions and his constant struggles to accept his son for who he is (best part of the novel... Pages 211 to 219 :D)... And the massacre at the end; I literally became too emotionally involved and couldn't read it to the end without crying (don't laugh at me :S). Go Admon! :)

EDIT: Everyone is updated with the costargh phenomenon. :P
