They're alright I had one til my mother took mine lol ^_^ but yeah it's pretty good I liked it :)

What price are you looking at for a laptop that has the bare essentials. Only needed to do word processing, other applications and internet. No games or nothing like that. Really minimal and cheap. Oh plus must be able to connect to wireless internet.
-

tv card is easy done, u wouldnt need anything fancy... if u want a fairly smooth system (at normal usage) set aside 1500?? if u can put up with occasional lags 1000~1250??
these days brands dont really matter, they all work pretty good, (that's provided they're prominent brands like acer/asus/dell/hp/nec)
or, apple works like a charm :)

If I use Linux does that mean I can still have Word etc
-

His prices might be slightly higher on the website then they r in reality cos he hasnt updated it for a while because of vce. Check it out anyway though. Hes awesome with computers and i buy my stuff through him.

You can't run Microsoft Word natively, but there are alternatives.
Dunno bout CrossOffice, prolly best alternative. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CrossOver
- OpenOffice
- Abiword

I'm a Linux dude also (my server runs it), but I would never use it as a desktop OS, not at the moment at least. I recommend a Macbook or Dell laptop (with XP, not Vista).
-
I'm using the same setup as joshuamorgan, almost quite literally - we share a server. ;D
That said, Linux is just not ready for the desktop yet. I love my Macbook to bits, but I make use of the POSIX underpinnings and don't play games - I realise that OS X is not for everyone.
-
And neither is, unfortunately, quite ready for those who play a lot of games.
That said, I'd die without my linux server!

hey Obsolete Chaos,

LOL 1.2 GHz celeron + 30 Gb hard drive - optical drive, LOL
sorry :P
that's probably an earlier model, but if you want a lighter option and is prepared to spend a bit more $$$ then have a shark around the shops, they do have some relatively small laptops (10" or thereabouts) that weighs a lot less than a normal 15.4", and performance doesnt give up either.
-
How do people like the Dell Inspiron 1501? It's got everything I want, and it's not a bad price ($690 new)...
-
its not bad, 1Gb with integrated graphics could be interesting, you wouldnt want to run vista unless you're also planning to get some ReadyBoost to up that RAM... but overall for $700 it's a pretty good deal :D
it's also just over 14", smaller than normal laptops, pretty cool,
but if you can spare another $400 i'd suggest the Inspirion 1525, it'll run a bit smoother, even though the graphics is Intel Integrated, it shouldnt be THAT bad, you're not going to play hardcore games, right? :P
even though it's normal size, it feels a lot lighter (i was undecided between that and my M1530), and you get to pick from a range of colours :D

If you want something light, get the Eee PC.
It's fairly light on the wallet too.

Usually not. Office is seperate.
-
Say if I buy a laptop from Dell online. What do I have to do to be able to use it lol If that makes sense.
-
It'll have windows installed, but you need to pay extra to get office installed (or you can buy office).
-
Ok What office will I need?
-
Ok What office will I need?
how much are you willing to pay?
office academic is only around $250 i think? that's word+excel+powerpoint
if you want more then professional edition is around $750...
pfft who pays for software these days anyways??
-
Yeh but Im worried Ill have problems in the future with using software that isn't 'genuine'. I want to spend at most 1000 bucks. All I need it for is for schoolwork and using the internet.

no one is stopping you from paying for software!
when you buy from dell it'll come with windows vista installed, you dont need to worry about that
if you want office then go down to officeworks and buy it
-
But thats what I am asking. Don't I need Office anyway? Like I won't be able to use my laptop for what I need it for if I don't have it?
-
If you download Open Office (which is freeware) it basically does the same thing... but for free! Actually, I'm not sure what programs it has, but your basic Word would be in there.
-
lol. Macbook air is thinnest of thinnest. It's bulimic :P But OS X isn't for hardcore gamers I can tell you that LOL. But I personally think Mac is out of the question for kopite or odette as they just don't like it (natural hate :P ). Dull XPS is a great notepad on the PC imo.

unless you have other sources of software which i will not discuss here
but use your money as you sees wise

Mac's are great, from what i have heard, the same specs on Mac can do twice (if not more) than PC, and everything is more streamlined, more efficient, and just generally better
the only problems are: lack of games + very expensive
but they look so cool....~~~!!!
(ps i want a time capsule)
