Today at work I was electrocuted when I was plugging a cord into the power outlet. It wasn't just a split second thing, stupid me thought that I had a twitch in my hand until I realised what was happening. My hands hurt heaps before and now it feels like my finger bones are really sore. My hands are also twitching right now.
Should I be alarmed?
-
See a doctor.
Purely from a first aid trained perspective, I would say that your nerves have been overwhelmed by the charge (hence twitching). Again, see a doctor.

sue the pants off your employer.
-
omg, the most i've ever experienced is getting zapped by static.
dodgy OH&S
-
I played with those disposable cameras and I got a nice zap from the capacitor :(
-
If you were electrocuted, you would be dead. Electrocuted is a blend between electric and execution.
</english language instinct>
On topic: I have nothing to add. 0=)
-
So is the correct term electric shocked?

So is the correct term electric shocked?
Yep :)
Note: I'm sorry if I came across as an English nazi (didn't think before I typed). I generally don't care about mistakes as long as I can understand what you mean (eg I don't care if you get it's/its wrong because I do that sometimes too), just with that, there's a big difference in meaning :P
-
i once put those blocky batteries on my tongue and I got shocked and I got really pissed off at the battery and threw at the neighbour's birdcage and it made them go nuts and then I ran back inside and pretended that nothing happened.

LOL. but what were you doing with the batteries on your tongue??
-
Lol But I am dead Mel =P

Junkie :P.

Ive got pains in my foot also, the same sorta pain in my hand on the same side of my body (left side). If its not gone tomoz Ill go to the doctor.
-
costargh, it's really important to have some grounding like rubber sole shoes or something when you did that, maybe the effect wouldve been less bad.
but the blocky batteries felt good felt fuzzy

sue the pants off your employer.
+1 haha that would give you some finanacial comfort!!

OMG DROODLES UR 100% RIGHT!!! FUCK! Usually im sposed to be in my complete uniform b4 i start but this time i just wore my diseals because i didnt wanana change into the work gumboots ( i wear them cause ther convinient) lol! and this if the first time i havent worn them and iv plugged in the friidge 100's of times and never had a problem!
If I die I leave my FSN account in the hands of Droodles. He also gets my life savings and my fcuk buddies =)
-
Ooh. It definitely sounds like you took a good beating. The power point gives an electrical output with more than enough capacity to electrocute someone, so it is lucky that you're still here.
The current travelled down through your foot in order to discharge using the ground. You need to have rubber sole shoes in order to make sure you cannot complete a current, so that electricity will not decide to run through your body.
Hopefully there is no long-term damage, and only some short-term pain from the shock.
-
Oh thanks Coblin. Whats the pain actually caused by?
-
I'd imagine it comes from burnt nerves (due to the high amount of energy discharged through your body).
-
Ahk. thanks
-
240 volts went through you and your still alive? it must be a miracle that you survived! :uglystupid2:
-
Gee, that's a miracle indeed, the pain probably wouldn't be due to burnt nerves (or you wouldn't be able to feel anything :P), but rather burnt tissue which the nerves are reacting to.
Hmm.. wasn't there a safety switch installed?
-
Well, the charge probably didn't go through his heart (maybe around the outside of the body?).
Let us know how the doctor's goes.
-
The shock traversed your heart then
Droodles is right about grounding, you were lucky it wasn't worse too.
It only takes about 20V through the heart and you're cactus
You got a macroshock (i think), arm to foot, you should count yourself lucky that your foot hurts. If it didn't, the other point of entry is a microshock, straight to the heart muscle.

I'm guessing the wonderful world of Hungry Jacks Kitchen??

Looks like you won't be suing then!

LOl I feel fine today so must have been minor.
Ill take more care next time but Im gonna make a complaint about people working at the back not draining the fridge properly and leavin the cord in water overnite.
yep hj's

wow, once upon a time i have hoped for a HJ that actually cares about OH&C more than getting out of the closing shift early
this just proved we're all one of the same kind, ;D ;D

Do you mean OH&S?
And yeh its pretty pathetic that some new trainees don't see the danger in leaving water in a fridge with the cord in there.
Lol and don't bag me for not realising because i leaned in to get the cord and the only way i could do so was to look away as i stretched to get it and there was no actual water on the cord from what I could tell cause its partially covered. Hard to explain.
Bloody closers dont know what their doing

The lethality of an electric shock doesn't depend on the voltage of the source, but rather the current. Currents as little at 1MA directly across the heart can be fatal.
-
240V at 50A is enough to kill anyone through the heart :P
-
yeah.. it's actually the current which is the killer not the voltage. look at tasers, they got massive volts but only few die :P
-
lol my brother washed a cord once, with the plug and everything.
i've been electric shocked by random plugs hanging off my tv as well, but it wasn't so bad - it was just really tingly for a while. :)

And probably make u well done as well :P
