Title: Not meeting pre-requisites..
Post by: rargh on December 16, 2008, 08:27:37 pm
Hi guys,

I wanna do RMIT Media, which has a SS of 35 in English with a clearly-in ENTER of 92.95. I got an ENTER of 93.85, but my English SS was 34 - ONE BELOW THE PRE-REQUISITE!!

I got a 50 in Media, so do you think if I plead my case they might accept me? I've done stacks and stacks of volunteer work in the media, and I've won a lot of awards for my films, so if I met with someone from the Faculty and explained this to them do you think they'd be able to work something out? I saw that costargh was in a similar predicament, so I'm sure this will help him out as well.. haha :)

Contact them directly and try and plead your way in. Directly contacting them already shows that you have a GENUINE interest in the course, which is reinforced by your extra-curricular work. So I guess you might as well test your luck...I don't think anyone here can give you a yes or no answer however.

Yeah, do that.

Make sure you find the right person, and explain it to them. They will want you :)

Lolz, again, I want to give you my English score. :P (Just like I wanted to give costatgh my methods score XD... It seems I got what people need, and I stole it from them when I didn't even need it!)

I'm thinking you should definitely go in for an interview. I mean, a 50 in Media is basically the TOP of the state;; they have to accept you! Provoke them for the interview, if they don't respond, provoke them more. You're bound to get what you need in the end!!! I wish you all the best, and hope you get into media, because obviously you deserve it! :)

EDIT: What shinny and bturville said XD

You could definitely try. Ring up the university and discuss your situation with them. Some universities will be slightly lenient when it comes to course requirements in exceptional circumstances. (For example, in 2005, my brother pleaded his case and ultimately he was told he was able to apply for an Urban Planning course despite not meeting the maths study score entrance requirement.) So yeah, definitely worth a try.

Good luck.

Thanks heaps for your replies guys :) I was planning on contacting them directly anyway, but I just wanted to gauge my chances beforehand.. hehe

I'm going to HOUND them until I get in.. I'm not taking no for an answer. :)

Oh, and thanks for the generous offer happy! :P

make sure you call up the right person that is in charge of accepting the future students, find the right faculty too. you could always try and get people such as your principal to write a letter to endorse you. bring your parents to the interview to and sound really eager to do the desired course you're wanting to .  and lastly make sure you know little details about RMIT and how the university structure is about.
good luck and i hope you get into RMIT Media.

if you had a good GAT result for the written communications part get that to RMIT interview..also get your principal to write something about the new course changes in English that has caused problems etc. if thats going to be of any help.

Haha, that would be so awesome! Just seeing people get into their courses is all I want... I would have gotten into mine with a 50 study score and a 20 in English. XD... I have lots of love to give. :P

yeah i was thinking i'd just head into RMIT with the name of the person i'd like to see and demand to speak with them :P does anyone have an idea of who i should speak to? haven't gone searching on the RMIT website yet but any help would be appreciated.

i was sick during my GAT and didn't do too great in the written section because it was the last section that i did and i just wanted to leave.. i got a standardised 37. last year though i got a standardised 48... do you think i could show them that as well?

i'm probably going to head into rmit tomorrow and slam down their doors.. :P

Ohhh, another one got that!!! I'm feeling better and better about my GAT scores now. XD

But seriously rargh, I would run into RMIT and demand justice! A 50 in media is something special, and RMIT should be able to see that!

i was in one of those student profiles in the age education section during the year too and i said i was either going to do rmit media or bond uni film/tv next year, so maybe i can cut that out too? haha :)

i'm just gonna go into rmit and say "even though i didn't meet the english pre-requisite, YOU WANT ME!!" :P

Yes, definitely cut that out. :)

RMIT NEEDS you, I bet most of those students  doing media didn't even do media as a VCE subject, let alone get a FIFTY in it!!!

Speak to the head of your school (or the selections officer - details listed at the bottom of the pdf)

Info needed is here: http://mams.rmit.edu.au/mnm0sozqise7.pdf

Good luck ;)

I found this page:

http://www.economics.unimelb.edu.au/SITE/ContactUs/admstaff.shtml

You might want to call the course enquiries number and ask them who the admissions manager/officer overseeing Commerce admissions is?

No problem ;). The course coordinator of my school @ RMIT is really understanding, hope the Media one is the same :D.

Good luck! Make sure you let us know what happens. If I were in charge of admissions, I'd definitely let you in!

thanks eriny :P fingers crossed!

i'm actually already enrolled up at bond university on the gold coast to do communications up there majoring in film and tv (i got a scholarship), but i still want to get into a course down in melbourne and defer that for a year so if i hate bond i can always fly back down to melbourne and still go to uni :)

i'm sure i won't hate bond, but if i'm coming back to melbourne i wouldn't want to do any course other than rmit media!

Hey guys, Don't think I need to start another thread.

I'm in the same position.  Pretty much the degree I want requires an English SS of 25, but I got 23.  I want to go to Monash, and did Enhancement studies there this year with a HD average of 93.5

I've had no luck so far with the admissions office, can anyone give me some advice of where to go next?

From the correspondance I've had with Monash University about this in the past few days the answer is basically:
"Fuck off, go to another University or enroll in a course where the pre-requisite isn't a requirement"

Plus the administration at Monash are rude pricks, condescending and uppity.

ouch, did you get a good enough ENTER for the course, like exceeding its clearly-in?

He did. Unfortunately, prerequisites as a rule are unbendable.

Have you considered re-doing Methods through distance ed / CAE?

Another option is a Diploma of Business through Monash College (which you do have the prereqs for; >25 in English and any Maths) which would let you articulate directly into 2nd year of Commerce/Business at Monash after you finish the 1 year course ... but you need to get a HD average in your diploma and $20,000 to pay for it (it's full fee).

Yeh I have, I might do that possibly.
But is it possible say for me to enroll in Law/comm at deakin, do methods via distance ed and then apply through vtac for comm/law at monash the following year?

I don't see why not. You'll be applying as a non-year 12 student, so the procedure will be different in some ways I would assume.

You could possibly even apply directly to the university through their online system which I just happen to have worked on, but call the Bus/Eco faculty when the time comes.
