Does anyone know of a deserted airport or something in the country (or the city) which we can practice driving in? I don't like the idea of an empty shopping centre car park...
Directions and locations appreciated!

Theres a whole set of roads behind Bunnings in Moorabbin off Warrigal road, corner of Fairchild st, that are really good to begin driving on. Really wide roads, driveways, small carparks etc. After normal work hours the roads are bare

I second this, for any industrial area on the weekend. Nice wide streets, speed limit is low so no pressure to drive fast, the only other cars you'll see are fellow learners etc :P

Yeah, the first time I drove as a learner was at an industrial estate at night. Although I did do traffic safety lessons on my school oval. If you can get to an oval to learn the basics, that would be good too.
But, once you've figured out how to work the car, the best place for practise is the city. If you can drive there, you can drive most places. Also freeways and narrow dirt roads or windy roads at night are good to get up your skills.

I find residential streets pretty tricky when there are parked cars on either side of the street, I still don't have a feel for how wide the car is

And that's probably the hardest thing to ever learn as you can and will be using different cars over your life.

outer suburb residential streets are so much better, nice wide roads =D

The only issue with driving in the city is knowing which lane you have to be in. Once you know the lanes in the city (they seem to be different at every intersection; hook turns are not standard), it's a cinch as traffic travels at about three hours per kilometre. :P
