Title: P Plates
Post by: bturville on February 21, 2008, 07:45:05 pm
How many hours did you guys do on your learners before going for your p's?

Title: Re: P Plates
Post by: iamdan08 on February 21, 2008, 08:07:06 pm
I havn't got my P's yet (october) but i have been on my L's for just over a year and have only done 40 hours. I dont know how anyone can clock up the 120 hours that we are supposedly supposed to do!!!

Post by: Eriny on February 21, 2008, 08:15:06 pm
I did 122 hours before I got my P's (including my driving test, lol). I got that many because I drove basically everywhere, if we were going to visit someone's house or going to school in the morning or going shopping or on holidays or whatever, I drove. I would have gotten more but around exam time I didn't go as many places and thus did not drive as much.

I drive whenever I'm in the car, the only problem is thats usually only once a week. I reckon i will be lucky to get to 80 by the time i go for my P's! lol.

Well, as long as you're on the old system, then that's not a problem! One of my friends got her Ps after only about 40 hours of driving.

Post by: Nick on February 21, 2008, 09:46:47 pm
I probably did a total of about 70-75 hours.

I did 50-55 hours, with most of them in a manual car. You really only need as much as it takes for u to be confident. However, with the ludicrous mandatory 120 hour rule now, it will take the majority of learners quite a long time to get the hours in order to go for their Ps, since not many people have access to a car on a regular basis, due their parents/relatives not having the time to be alongside.

Title: Re: P Plates
Post by: Eriny on February 22, 2008, 06:17:35 pm
Maybe you should schedule it in? If you hold your Ls for a little over two years you could make the time by driving an hour a week, which isn't too bad, it's about 8 minutes a day.

I probably did about 20-40 hours all-up, so I was a pretty shithouse driver when I got my Ps. Even then, I only lost one point (for not turning on my windscreen wipers soon enough), so the system is fairly accommodating even for terrible drivers - thus the situation that we have on our roads today. Since getting my Ps, I've done a smidgen under 2,600km in a couple of months which is anywhere between another 25-50 hours so I'm only marginally better.

I'm sitting my Ps in a fortnight. I've logged 65 hours according to the scratchy thingy on the fridge, but I've probably done more. I'm not good with remembering to record stuff like this...

Is it true that if you get your liscence before the 1st of June the new rules do not apply to you? I thought that they would effect every P plate driver? But people have told me that they will not apply to people who get their liscence before the new laws?

The problem my bestie has found is that all the driving skools are booked out as well (like, except for during skool hours, but she's in yr 12 this yr). She's asked if I'll sit in as an 'instructor' for a couple of driving lessons with her mum, just so she can get used to the driving routes and the sorts of things they'll ask her to do.

Woo!! got my licence yesterday. The test was pretty easy. About 15 minutes, and i only lost a few marks for not looking in my rear vision mirror enough. Its going to suck once the graduated system comes in though. Apparently tests will take at least 45 minutes.

I had it easier, since I didn't even have to do a slow speed manoeuvre in the normal sense. I just parallel parked (nose first) at VicRoads after my test was complete.

I hope stores dont think "were selling something that a lot of people MUST buy within the next few weeks" and charge something ridiculous for them (e.g. $15)
Title: Re: P Plates
Post by: Collin Li on May 20, 2008, 08:29:49 pm
That shouldn't happen. You don't need any certification or registration to sell a P plate on your stores, so there are strong competitive forces that would bring down the prices.

Also, demand may not necessarily be higher. It wouldn't make sense to believe there will be a surge of green P applicants. If anything, there will be a dip, because everyone is crowding to register before green Ps. The only reason why demand may be higher is because there is currently no "second-hand" market for the green P plates. I don't think that is a major contributor.

The green p plate thing only applies to people under 21 right??
So if you over 21 and get your p's then the new laws don't applY???

Im not sure.....

green plates only apply to those who get their license after 1 July this year
Title: Re: P Plates
Post by: Collin Li on May 20, 2008, 09:39:01 pm
I think you misunderstood her question. Her point was: the restriction is that you can only hold 1 passenger aged 16-21. Does this restriction still hold if you get your green P's and you are in excess of 21? (i.e.: it sounds pretty ridiculous to block a 50 year old fresh driver from driving some young blokes around)

Our tests are ridiculously easy compared to others.

My cousins from Germany are currently over, and the eldest one was recalling her drive test that she recently passed. They have to do TWO tests, one day and one night, which is about an hour's length.

They also have to drive on the Autobahn (that crazy freeway with no speed limits).

I think we have it easy here..

Yes. You will have to replace the red P plate with green ones from 1 July 2008.

:(

Or they could've made P1 = Green and P2 = Red so that existing P platers don't have to go out and buy NEW plates.

Agree. Its gonna be an inconvenience for all of us current P platers to buy the green plates.

That's nothing. At Turkey, you have the driving test + they test you on all the engine parts (i.e motor test), you've gotta know everything inside out.

Mmm.. I must have missed that. You're right then. There will be an increase in demand, but the prices will not be unjustified (not extortion from stores or anything - just simply supply and demand). The licensing (government policy) itself may be.

Obtained from Graduated Licensing System website ( http://gls.arrivealive.vic.gov.au/prelearner/key_changes/going-green-for-red-p-plate-drivers.html ):

"GOING GREEN FOR RED P PLATE DRIVERS
Victoria's new graduated licensing system is introducing new driver licensing rules. These new rules mean that a probationary driver will have to display either a red or green P plate.

If you obtained your probationary licence before 1 July 2008, you will have to change your P plate from red to green.

A green P plate driver has fewer restrictions such as how many passengers they can carry.

Attach your green P plates so they are clearly visible on your vehicle, and make sure you do not use them before 1 July  2008."

And no Jo, I make useful posts ...mostly :P ;)

In my random googling (because I don't have to go to work for another hour yet...) I've found a link that may answer a lot of people's questions:

http://gls.arrivealive.vic.gov.au/component/option,com_fastfacts/Itemid,140/

You fill in your own circumstances and it explains how the new rules affect you personally.

"Thanks for your 'Fast Facts' inquiry. As you are 18 - 21 years old and you obtained your probationary licence after 1 July 2007 but before 1 July 2008, then the following rules apply to you:

    * You must stay on your probationary licence for at least three years.
    * If you were tested in a car with automatic transmission, then you can only drive this type of car.
    * You must comply with restrictions on driving high powered vehicles. Click here for the restrictions that apply to you.
    * You must have a zero blood alcohol concentration (BAC) whenever you drive
    * If you are convicted of a drink driving offence involving a BAC of .07 or higher, you must have an alcohol interlock fitted to your car for a minimum of six months when you return to driving.
    * You must display your red P plates on the front and back of any car you drive.
    * From 1 July 2008, you must display a green P plate, not a red one.
    * You must carry your probationary licence with you whenever you drive.
    * If you incur five or more demerit points in 12 months, or 12 or more in three years, your probationary licence may be suspended.

After at least three years on your probationary licence, you will be eligible to obtain a full driver licence."

Wait... wait... Excal's "Are you trying to increase your post count?" comment was directed at you, not me? Now I am confused... but... *this is taking all my thinking power in my tired state* ...so Excal wasn't making fun of me trying to increase my post count when I don't care about it? I mean, my I-don't-careness (again, tired state, don't expect me to be literate or make total sense right now) is pretty obvious all factors considered. You know what I don't get... why does anyone care about what their post count is anyway? Anyway... if anyone was trying to get their post count up, it was you Jo!! Don't lie... you wanted 700 posts, I know the truth!!

I researched and ended up answering my own question anyway, which I posted ...albeit after you both answered my question (without evidence... which brendan would slaughter you for :P).

You know what? I know there's no point in posting this incoherent piece of trash, but I figure it gives a useful insight into the effects of sleep deprivation ...and I'm sure Mao will have a good laugh when he floats in here.

Just found this on a victorian government website:

A green P package, including a pair of green P plates and information explaining these changes is now being mailed to the 250,000 probationary licence holders in Victoria.

If a probationary driver, motorcyclist or scooter rider has not received their free green P plates by 20 June, they should contact their local VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

Its the 9th today, so i'd expect most will arrive this week

I worked out why they made P2 green and P1 red. I was talking to my uncle today (who lives in Qld, and is down in Vic @ mo), and they've modeled it off the Queensland licensing system.
There are a few differences between the licensing conditions, but I think the similarities outnumber the discrepancies. You can all have a look yourselves if you'd like:

http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/Home/Licensing/Driver_licence/Getting_a_licence/Car/Provisional_licence/

They did it the way they did so the colours coincided, rather than conflicted, with the licensing system of another state.
The change-over with issuing a whole bunch of green P-plates may be annoying now, but in the long run it seems to make more sense.

Edit: copied wrong link ::) ...all better now :)

I had a look at the NSW Probationary system and noticed they have a passenger restriction for P1 drivers too. However, it only applies from 11PM to 5AM. I think thats a much better idea than the one vicroads is bringing in. At least things like carpooling to school/work and road trips are still an option.

EDIT:
Also, a sneak peek at the new green Ps:

I had a look at the NSW Probationary system and noticed they have a passenger restriction for P1 drivers too. However, it only applies from 11PM to 5AM. I think thats a much better idea than the one vicroads is bringing in. At least things like carpooling to school/work and road trips are still an option.

I totally agree.... the government is all pushing for us all to be greener (scuse the pun) without them having to spend money to do it, yet now they don't want young people car-pooling to uni/school/work to save petrol to help the environment. I think NSW has a good thing going where the restriction applies only between 11pm and 5am, and I think our government should have put a bit more consideration into this.

Nope... that would've been smarter tho, hey?
It doesn't seem to matter what time of day, the restriction is simply:

"P1 driver can only carry one passenger aged between 16 and 21."

I got my green Ps today and i was intrigued by the accompanying letter explaining how to dispose of my old red P-plates. Its clear that the government is making a poor attempt to connect with the youth by suggesting such things as "make it into a paper plane." But in the end, their still the government, so it says "throw it to your brother" rather than "throw it AT your brother" like most people would.

Any1 care 2 try it? *sneaky eyes*

U no.. the government could have actually been intuitive and put a big box in every VicRoads branch for us to chuck our old red P-plates in2. They could've then RECYCLED these P-plates by giving sets to the new red P-platers (July 1 2008 onwards), rather than encouraging us to litter our rivers with 'p-plate sail boats'. I'm sure a handful of supermarkets would've been happy to help by not crushing an odd 10 boxes each. The wonders of using free boxes compared to the cost of printing a whole bunch of coloured pictures... ::)

Urgh... I usually don't care enuf 2 complain, but it just seems so dumb...

So is it essentially the same as the old test except you drive for longer?
Title: Re: P Plates
Post by: phagist_ on July 27, 2008, 12:57:45 am
Yep. It's broken into 2 stages.

1st stage is street driving (40-60kmh zones) and you just do the basics, turn left/right merge left/right and your low speed maneuver.

2nd stage is mainly 60-80kmh zones with heavier traffic, but essentially you just do the same thing (merging into lanes/turning/roundabouts/etc..)

Read this, it has the assessment criteria;

It's red and just says 'Probationary License' but under my date of birth it has 'P1 END DATE: 25-07-2009'.

So I guess that's the only difference.

And the test really was not that hard.

I only had to do a 3 point turn, not parallel park! Test seemed to go on forever though, easily 30 mins plus.

Meh, I live at a college on campus, so there's no real need to drive anywhere. And if I do need to get somewhere, then I just get one of my friends to drive me. It's pretty simple.

Plus when I'm back in Melbourne, I live about 5 mins walk from a train station, so I just use public transport to get around.

:D Eco ftw!

I can't believe a government department could be so inefficiently managed. (Well, actually I can. It IS a government department after all or subordinate authority, I can't actually remember what it falls under.)

Furthermore, I can't understand why they wouldn't increase the number of testers. Not only would it benefit the customers but their hip pocket as well! More customers per month= more revenue. It would be fair to assume that for every test done, there would be a profit, so fucken up your production, reap the benefits and provide an efficient service to your customers who have no choice but to deal with you, or open up the industry to competitors so you'll be forced to lower your prices, increase your efficiency and provide a better fucken service. Kunts.
