Title: My Sister Needs Help Deciding Which Subject To Do... :D
Post by: Odette. on December 19, 2008, 09:25:57 am
Ok my sister is completing year 12 in 2009 however she's not sure which subject she wants to choose... (She's stuck on a 6th subject)
So far she's doing:
English
Further Maths
Religion and Society
Health and Human Development
Psychology

She really wants to do Biology, but the school isn't offering biology [LAME I KNOW!]... and she was considering Business Management (I wonder who suggested this to her ;) ) However it's on the same time as Psychology..

So I told her maybe she could complete either biology or business management via distance ed...

It's either that or she ends up doing International Politics... (Which she definitely isn't interested in)

Oh and if it helps she's hoping to major in Hospitality Management at University (Hence the main reason I suggested BusMan)

Any suggestions?
Thanks

She cood def do busman via distance ed. it isnt a subject where u 100% need a teacher and considering u did it in 2007 she wood be fine doing it with ur help. if she frequented on VN she wood also have access to valuable resources.

Yeah exactly, I mean if she wanted to do biology, it would be really hard for her to do by distance ed, unless she got a tutor...
Would be good for her to choose BusMan, seeing that I love the subject so much, I could tutor her ;)

Not sure if she'd join the forum, she's not really um how should I put it... well she's not the type to join a VCE forum (So I'll just download the notes and resources for her) :D

Heys

Bus man and biology are both subjects which can be done via distance ed because its mainly theory based. If you got someone to help her for either subject then that would be even better.

Biology compared to Busman
Biology doesnt scale down whereas Busman does    1-0
Biology has 2 exams whereas Busman only has one  1-1
Busman she can have both help from school and at home whereas biology she doesnt 1-2
She really wants to do biology which means she is interested it 2-2

I guess if she does biology is more risky considering there are 2 exams and she might need a teacher for some things however if she wants to study it and has interest then it is good. A safe decision would be Bus man considering that you can help her and substitute as her teacher also her school has it and friends/teacher could help her as well.

Another suggestion would be do a university subject like University Psychology but im not sure if you are too late, since applications should have been sent already. Or maybe you can apply for a late application. I dont know much about this.

Biology or Busman whatever she decides VN has good resources and helpers (educators?lols) on this forum to help for both subjects.

Ermmmm let's say she wouldn't get into Psychology at University level.... she hasn't exactly gotten the marks she needs to get into the programs .. and she's only doing psychology because there are no other options for her.

Thanks for the help though ;D ^^

Well. . . . there are other university subjects such as philosophy etc.. . . . So there is alot more variety to pick from.

True... but I think she wouldn't be able to get in any of them, she's smart, but she isn't really persistant :( *trying to help her change*
I thought BusMan would be good because:
1. She's completing Hospitality Management in Uni
2. It's a rather pretty straight forward subject
3. I can help her
4. I think she'd do extremely well

Then Busman it is then  :)

BusMan would be more useful to her since she is wanting to do Hospitality Management, where as Biology wouldn't have any use in that line of interest. If BusMan is a subject she's interested, she should definitely do that. :)

Either bus man or legal... Legal is the easiest subject ever; literally. :P  (Why else would I have scored highest in it? :))

But bus man is probably the best choice (thank god your sister got rid of all those hard subjects... I wish my study program had no maths. :P)

the question should be, does she WANT to do Bus Man ?

it is a terrible reason that because you can tutor her well so she should do it. Help is one aspect, but the most important thing is the passion. if she doesn't want to do it, no matter how good you are, it won't make her do any better than terrible.

biology isn't a bad option, there are many bio high achievers around, the first to pop into my head is shinny, who is offering tuition services next year.

but on another note... hasn't she already got 5 subjects? overloading with another ISNT a smart idea.

Oh well you see she said she'd prefer to do business management over international politics, and when I spoke to her about how it would help her with hospitality management, she finally agreed to choosing business management, however she can't do it via the school, because it clashes with another subject.

Yeah 6 subjects would be a lot of subjects to tackle

EDIT: The school wont allow her to do only 5 subjects...

I agree with just sticking to 5. Doing a distance subject as a 6th is too much.

if she's not that interested in/good at psych, maybe drop that and take up BM instead?

Hmm good suggestion, I should talk to her about that, but what about her 6th subject?
Another question, can a school force you to complete 6 subjects in year 12?
Thanks

they can't technically, but i guess if she doesn't they can 'ask her to leave' etc

my school basically tried to force me to do english, but i just dropped it without informing them and they just let it go.

anyway, for her 6th she could always do legal or something 'easy' like that?

The school wouldn't ask her to leave... they need the money :D

And mine... It seems the schools that do the most subjects in year 12 end up under-performing? :( (Only my mentality...)

AGREED! VERY MUCHLY!
I remembered two reasons why my old school scrapped the idea of year 11's doing 3/4's:

1. If year 11's did 3/4's, it would stuff up the electives program for the year 7's (like who cares for them...those damn little buggers!! :P )

2. Consequently if year 11's did a 3/4, they would then have 8 free periods per fortnight in year 12 and the damn teachers don't like them year 12's wasting those free periods (the majority of us actually didnt use them free periods for studying :P...oh well)

Grrr... I was the only one studying in my free periods... I had to navigate from place to place just to get some quiet. :(
