Title: MED
Post by: khalil on December 21, 2008, 11:12:28 pm
CAn u get into med through melb or monash with an ENTER of 98?....is it better if u are from a public skool than a private.....and if u already have a scholrship with that uni ..like KLDYS with melb uni ?
thanks

Well Melbourne doesn't have undergraduate medicine so your ENTER doesn't matter for their post-graduate one (GPA, GAMSAT, interview). So KLDYS program doesn't give you an advantage.

Monash's components are interview, UMAT and ENTER. 98 is still a big chance IMO. The UMAT decides whether you get an interview and the interview is before ENTERs get released.

They wouldn't discriminate against which type of school you come from. That would just be unfair and extremely rude.

http://www.medstudentsonline.com.au/forums/index.php is fantastic for research too.

If you got the highest possible ENTER and you screwed up your interview you are also doomed to med-rejection.

My friend got 99.75, but he missed out on interview (didn't do so well in UMAT), so no med for him...

Whoa that has to hurt :( I know I'd be crushed if that happened to me.

At melbourne, if youre a KLDYS you can get into biomed with a 90 if you went to an underrepresented school, which is most of them

Biomedicine, lol.

It's subjected to places being available though.

melb uni doesn't do undergraduate med anymore so that's as close as you'll come:P

He could still go for guaranteed post-grad full-fee medicine at UoM. He's already above 99.00 so it's pretty much guaranteed except for a few technicalities. Main obstacle I'd say would be the cost which we worked out to be about $200k or so.

I asked UoM how it works, and you only need to enter biomedicine and that's it for now. Once it nears the time when your course finishes, THAT is when you bring up your ENTER with UoM and ask for your guaranteed Medicine place. Knowing this, what you should do (and what UoM recommends) is to run for Medicine through the normal path, but if you don't go so well, at least be comforted by the knowledge that you still have your guaranteed place in hand. Basically, the guaranteed place isn't something you have to 'lock-in' already, and even later. It's a last resort.

Oh woops, thought you meant biomed at UoM. Yeh, the path you're taking is alright. I mean, least you've got your law degree either way <_<

ANother thing, i heard UOM might not be doing the GAMSAT for 2011 post grad med, this tru? I heard they might be doing their own unique type of assesment.

Would this DIS advantage the biomed ppl that are there, like if they wanted to keep their options open and apply else where for med (cuz its really competitve at UOM) they would have to study for GAMSAT and this new melbourne grad entry test.

Another thing, my friend wants to know whether post grad med is titled MBBS or MD, because if its MD thats a huge thing.

It is MD, one of the more salient benefits of choosing the UoM pathway.

holy crap, generally it takes like 6 yrs of undergrad + 3/4 yrs of POST Grad to get MD, man thats awesome!

An MD wouldn't really mean much in the grand scheme of things over here

why not?
Title: Re: MED

Beause it's just a title, if the course remains fundamentally the same as the current post-grad course then it has no extra meaning.

An MBBS is equivilent to the MD from Northern America, if the new melbourne course wants to name its qualification an MD like the USA then we shouldn't confuse it with the MD we already offer here which is a PhD

I;m saying that the guaranteed pathway seems fishy at UoM. With 49 in biol, 47 in chem, 49 in methods you'll pretty clearly maintain a 75+ average and get in, and it is obviously the right path for you. I'm jut saying that there must be something difficult involved or some obstacle down the track - i cant put my finger on it, but getting 99.00 and a 75 average giving you automatic entry seems odd.

im doing biomed/law at monash so that i dont end up after 3 years not getting into med and having a degree in biomed by itself...

The fishy thing is the extremely high fees under full-fee. UoM wants your money; hence the 'low' guaranteed score needed.

EDIT: Oh, and I'm hardly considering this path anyway. I'm just saying for most 99+ people who can't get in any other way right now, this is an option.

No as in terms of getting an employment. A person with 'MD' would be very highly regarded and hence get a better leadership position then some1 who just walks in with a plain MBBS degree.

Here, in Australia, an MBBS is the same as an MD (MD being the qualification given to postgrad medical students in other countries)

If the course offers the extra education of the PhD, then yes, it will be a more advanced degree, but i'm not sure it will. To be honest the Melbourne MD needs to offer students the chance to undertake research projects to ensure it doesn't fall behind, but i imagine the faculty at melbourne is working on a very strong cirriculum to offer students, but as of this moment a graduate (non PhD level) MD = MBBS

shinny, i remember you having a post of a letter from UoM, saying that there is actually no guarantee to Med in UoM due to some irregular rule which i forgot..?
. Thus, you chose Monash instead of risking it.

A 75 average really isn't a given - I have a friend who got 99.70 and despite doing quite a bit of study at university, he couldn't maintain an 80 average after his first two years (he does physics btw). You'll find many students who did exceptionally well in yr12 can fall away in university and settle for an average in the 60s or low 70s. The 75 average thing is therefore probably a good incentive to keep students trying hard in their undergrad degrees.

It's pretty much definitely going to be GAMSAT. However with a price tag like that, and taking into account the email shinny received, its basically "guaranteed" entry, emphasis on the quotation marks! It will most likely be frighteningly competitive entry standards.

To some up everything here, does that mean if you get 99.00+ you must still GAMSAT, and maintain 75 average and still pay the lump of money?

and if you get 99.90 you dont need to pay money?

still confused.

and thanks toothpick for the link

Post by: shinny on December 23, 2008, 11:25:20 pm
No GAMSAT, but yes you have to maintain the 75 average AND pay full-fee. 99.90+ you still needa maintain the 75 average but you pay CSP fees.

what did the government say about full-fee places regarding if it was abolished or not?
or something to do with HECS?

i thought all full-fee were gone?

For shinny, you said it will be $200,000 but i thought we worked out that it will be only around $18,700 a year... because that is what grad med was at melb before the model...undergrad was around $40,000 per year not grad.
