Voted the 2nd most influential book (after the Bible).

if you haven't already, check out the his dark materials trilogy by phillip pullman.

and the 'wind on fire' trilogy by william nicholson is worth looking in to as well. i've only read the first one but i thought it was pretty good.

I have an odd request here.
What are good books that don't use a lot of descriptive language?

Ie I have great difficulty in understanding something like: (indeed, if I read it 10 times and used a dictionary on all the unfamiliar words I still  wouldn't understand it completely)

I'm an odd person. I would say 1984 is much more easier to read then something like Harry Potter. HP tested the boundaries of my patience with reading :P

Does anyone know a compilation of extremely well written short stories? Short stories that cram all the detail in making reading a short but sweet experience? I'm looking for something that can greatly improve one's vocabulary.

If you really want to disturb yourself, i recommend American Psycho. You might have trouble finding it as most copies are banned in Australia.

I bought it from Borders, no problems at all. I think these days it's only banned in QLD.

Try Island, by Alastair MacLeod. Used it for The Imaginative Landscape (english context) this year, great short stories. Really sad, but great descriptions etc.

A great book to read is Vanity Fair by William Thackery, while the story is interesting, his comments are simply divine@

and another book i'd recommend is the picture of dorian gray by oscar wilde, it's brilliant.

Yeah, I'm really getting into the Beat generation and later counterculture of the 60s at the moment. Really some great stuff out there. Found a bookstore near to me which is filled with books of the genre and cheap as chips! So good. Need to pick up some more Beat stuff; Ginsberg, Burroughs, Kesey. Also got a biography of Dylan and one of Bob Marley to read.

One more exam to go then the real learning can begin. Mark Twain's quote would fit in well here.

If you want a laugh try practically anything by Douglas Adams. If you like sci-fi try Foundation Series or Ender's Game. If you like fast paced action try anything by Matthew Reilly (Ice station is quite good).

Lol, try the 'Chicken Soup' series. I love their books, especially "Chicken Soup for the Soul". Still my favourite. :)

Also, maybe the Stephanie Meyer books which are all so strangely addictive. Thank God I got hooked after the exams. :P

Yes! His books are great; incredibly more-ish. Scarecrow is the best of his I think, but yeah, start at Ice Station and work your way up to the masterpiece.

I have the book! I absolutely loved it. I hope they don't mess it up either. :( I'm never very satisfied with most book movies.

My favorite by him is Eleven Minutes. All his novels are so poignant.

tbh, I would only suggest reading 'The Line' if you want a good nights sleep - it'll put you to sleep after a few pages.

The Twilight series is alright. I read Twilight last year, but it should have ended there. It's a draining read. The movie is out soon, though.

I thought Artemis Fowl was written by Eoin Colfer.

Oops, yep. The werid vowel combinations are what screwed me up. But yeh, I remember reading a book by Paul Coelho, the Alchemist.

I LOVE Haruki Murakami. I have Kafka By The Shore! Have you read Amelie Nothomb - Fear and Trembling? Similar style of writing.

awesome, he's one of my favourite authors! kafka on the shore was the first book i read of his and i completely fell in love with it. i haven't read fear and trembling but i'll def get to it once school finishes!

I really enjoyed reading The Line. Out of all our books it was by far my favourite. Its insightful, especially the stuff about Weary Dunlop.

Ah, one of my favourite books; have you read any of his other ones? I quite like 'The Eternal Husband'.

Anyone else here a fan of Robin Hobb? I can't get enough of her writing - its fairly light, but still retains the crucial depth required in a high fantasy novel.

'Don't Start Me Talking' is just an anthology of Paul Kelly's lyrics. Get some of his cds, 'Songs from the South' should just about cover you really, and listen to them. It's a better way of picking up his lyrics, and therefore quotes for essays, whilst actually reading the book is a much better method for understanding the meaning of songs and being able to tie them to certain themes. If you like his music then you should enjoy doing 'Don't Start Me Talking'.

I know that The Crucible is now part of context, and I've only studied it in Year 11 so can't say whether or not it's a good book for how it's studied at Year 12 but it's not too bad. Gets into some decent stuff with historic links, such as McCarthyism. I'd do some background research over the summer about the Salem trials to better understand the book.

They studied Citizen Cane at school last year but scrapped it for this year because not too many guys were pleased with studying, I believe. Haven't seen it myself so can't make a judgement call on it.

i liked the secret river, i didnt find it boring at all, which is a shock to me, but i enjoyed all of the texts i studied for english this yr

On the other hand, this post is for ninwa, polky and any other curious folk who are silently interested in learning more about economics. These are light reads for people who have never studied economics at university.

David Friedman shows how day-to-day life uses economics, and is great at introducing the system of economic thought to ordinary individuals who are virgins to economic thought. He has never studied economics at a university, yet he has taught it. I haven't read it, but from what I've read of his writings, I can tell it should be good. I did flick through it, and it could be biased (he is an anarcho-capitalist or similarly inclined), but it should nevertheless be a good read.

The book is: Hidden Order: The Economics of Everyday Life by David Friedman

Try books from Tim Harford (Logic of Life, The Undercover Economist) and of course, Freakonomics (the most widely heard of pop economics book out there). These books are not biased.

On the other hand, this post is for ninwa, polky and any other curious folk who are silently interested in learning more about economics. These are light reads for people who have never studied economics at university.

David Friedman shows how day-to-day life uses economics, and is great at introducing the system of economic thought to ordinary individuals who are virgins to economic thought. He has never studied economics at a university, yet he has taught it. I haven't read it, but from what I've read of his writings, I can tell it should be good. I did flick through it, and it could be biased (he is an anarcho-capitalist or similarly inclined), but it should nevertheless be a good read.

The book is: Hidden Order: The Economics of Everyday Life by David Friedman

Try books from Tim Harford (Logic of Life, The Undercover Economist) and of course, Freakonomics (the most widely heard of pop economics book out there). These books are not biased.
Also, The Armchair Economist - Steven Landsburg, is recommended

Jodi Picoult- My Sister's Keeper (saddest book in the whole world, everyone in my family read it and cried...even my dad) OR Nineteen Minutes.

I swear, anything by her is a tear-jerker! :P
But they're so good! And the forensic science in them is so fascinating. And the court cases; reading them made my sister want to be a lawyer.
Dave Pelzer's autobiographies are also good tear-jerkers, particularly A Child Called It.

The Armchair Economist - Steven Landsburg is definitely recommended.

  It seems to be lionized in America, wheras it doesn't recieve nearly as much popular acclaim here or in the UK. I'm with you though, humph :)

^ I have to read Homage to Catalonia. The only Orwell's I've read so far are 1984, Animal Farm and Burmese Days.

If you're looking for non-fiction I really enjoyed How Language Works and The Adventure of English. As for fiction, do you want summery light-hearted stuff or literary? If the latter, my favourites are:
1984, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye, A Brave New World, A Clockwork Orange, Orlando, The Bell Jar, Catch-22, Jane Eyre, and Life of Pi.

I always seem delighted to read any compilation of short stories. The thought of finishing one and going back to read the next one later makes me feel relieved that I hadn't missed anything important, or having an interrupted interpretation of the book.

"One beautiful April morning, on a narrow side street in Tokyo's fashionable Harujuku neighborhood, I walked past the 100% perfect girl.

Tell you the truth, she's not that good-looking. She doesn't stand out in any way. Her clothes are nothing special. The back of her hair is still bent out of shape from sleep. She isn't young, either - must be near thirty, not even close to a "girl," properly speaking. But still, I know from fifty yards away: She's the 100% perfect girl for me. The moment I see her, there's a rumbling in my chest, and my mouth is as dry as a desert.

Maybe you have your own particular favorite type of girl - one with slim ankles, say, or big eyes, or graceful fingers, or you're drawn for no good reason to girls who take their time with every meal. I have my own preferences, of course. Sometimes in a restaurant I'll catch myself staring at the girl at the next table to mine because I like the shape of her nose.

But no one can insist that his 100% perfect girl correspond to some preconceived type. Much as I like noses, I can't recall the shape of hers - or even if she had one. All I can remember for sure is that she was no great beauty. It's weird.

"Yesterday on the street I passed the 100% girl," I tell someone.

"Yeah?" he says. "Good-looking?"

"Not really."

"Your favorite type, then?"

"I don't know. I can't seem to remember anything about her - the shape of her eyes or the size of her breasts."

"Strange."

"Yeah. Strange."

"So anyhow," he says, already bored, "what did you do? Talk to her? Follow her?"

"Nah. Just passed her on the street."

She's walking east to west, and I west to east. It's a really nice April morning.

Wish I could talk to her. Half an hour would be plenty: just ask her about herself, tell her about myself, and - what I'd really like to do - explain to her the complexities of fate that have led to our passing each other on a side street in Harajuku on a beautiful April morning in 1981. This was something sure to be crammed full of warm secrets, like an antique clock build when peace filled the world.

After talking, we'd have lunch somewhere, maybe see a Woody Allen movie, stop by a hotel bar for cocktails. With any kind of luck, we might end up in bed.

Potentiality knocks on the door of my heart.

Now the distance between us has narrowed to fifteen yards.

How can I approach her? What should I say?

"Good morning, miss. Do you think you could spare half an hour for a little conversation?"

Ridiculous. I'd sound like an insurance salesman.

"Pardon me, but would you happen to know if there is an all-night cleaners in the neighborhood?"

No, this is just as ridiculous. I'm not carrying any laundry, for one thing. Who's going to buy a line like that?

Maybe the simple truth would do. "Good morning. You are the 100% perfect girl for me."

No, she wouldn't believe it. Or even if she did, she might not want to talk to me. Sorry, she could say, I might be the 100% perfect girl for you, but you're not the 100% boy for me. It could happen. And if I found myself in that situation, I'd probably go to pieces. I'd never recover from the shock. I'm thirty-two, and that's what growing older is all about.

We pass in front of a flower shop. A small, warm air mass touches my skin. The asphalt is damp, and I catch the scent of roses. I can't bring myself to speak to her. She wears a white sweater, and in her right hand she holds a crisp white envelope lacking only a stamp. So: She's written somebody a letter, maybe spent the whole night writing, to judge from the sleepy look in her eyes. The envelope could contain every secret she's ever had.

I take a few more strides and turn: She's lost in the crowd.

Now, of course, I know exactly what I should have said to her. It would have been a long speech, though, far too long for me to have delivered it properly. The ideas I come up with are never very practical.

Oh, well. It would have started "Once upon a time" and ended "A sad story, don't you think?"

Once upon a time, there lived a boy and a girl. The boy was eighteen and the girl sixteen. He was not unusually handsome, and she was not especially beautiful. They were just an ordinary lonely boy and an ordinary lonely girl, like all the others. But they believed with their whole hearts that somewhere in the world there lived the 100% perfect boy and the 100% perfect girl for them. Yes, they believed in a miracle. And that miracle actually happened.

One day the two came upon each other on the corner of a street.

"This is amazing," he said. "I've been looking for you all my life. You may not believe this, but you're the 100% perfect girl for me."

"And you," she said to him, "are the 100% perfect boy for me, exactly as I'd pictured you in every detail. It's like a dream."

They sat on a park bench, held hands, and told each other their stories hour after hour. They were not lonely anymore. They had found and been found by their 100% perfect other. What a wonderful thing it is to find and be found by your 100% perfect other. It's a miracle, a cosmic miracle.

As they sat and talked, however, a tiny, tiny sliver of doubt took root in their hearts: Was it really all right for one's dreams to come true so easily?

And so, when there came a momentary lull in their conversation, the boy said to the girl, "Let's test ourselves - just once. If we really are each other's 100% perfect lovers, then sometime, somewhere, we will meet again without fail. And when that happens, and we know that we are the 100% perfect ones, we'll marry then and there. What do you think?"

"Yes," she said, "that is exactly what we should do."

And so they parted, she to the east, and he to the west.

The test they had agreed upon, however, was utterly unnecessary. They should never have undertaken it, because they really and truly were each other's 100% perfect lovers, and it was a miracle that they had ever met. But it was impossible for them to know this, young as they were. The cold, indifferent waves of fate proceeded to toss them unmercifully.

One winter, both the boy and the girl came down with the season's terrible inluenza, and after drifting for weeks between life and death they lost all memory of their earlier years. When they awoke, their heads were as empty as the young D. H. Lawrence's piggy bank.

They were two bright, determined young people, however, and through their unremitting efforts they were able to acquire once again the knowledge and feeling that qualified them to return as full-fledged members of society. Heaven be praised, they became truly upstanding citizens who knew how to transfer from one subway line to another, who were fully capable of sending a special-delivery letter at the post office. Indeed, they even experienced love again, sometimes as much as 75% or even 85% love.

Time passed with shocking swiftness, and soon the boy was thirty-two, the girl thirty.

One beautiful April morning, in search of a cup of coffee to start the day, the boy was walking from west to east, while the girl, intending to send a special-delivery letter, was walking from east to west, but along the same narrow street in the Harajuku neighborhood of Tokyo. They passed each other in the very center of the street. The faintest gleam of their lost memories glimmered for the briefest moment in their hearts. Each felt a rumbling in their chest. And they knew:

She is the 100% perfect girl for me.

He is the 100% perfect boy for me.

But the glow of their memories was far too weak, and their thoughts no longer had the clarity of fouteen years earlier. Without a word, they passed each other, disappearing into the crowd. Forever.

I haven't read them yet but my sister is planning to purchase the rest of the books by Stephanie Meyer when she has the money to do so. My sister reallly wanted to have the whole collection of books by Stephanie Meyer so she is making me sell my copy of Twilight to her after I finish reading it.. LOL.

Hehe, my favourite one is where the girl is sin love with the vampire and they done everything together then at the end there was a car accident... I forgot which one it was though. XD

read "The Way Of Shadows!"  i'm really getting into this book. Its by Brent Weeks and is book one of the night angel trilogy.   Its about stealth and assassins!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (reason why i like it).

My sister's keeper was pretty overrated. Did not like her writing style at all...although the story itself wasn't too bad
