Title: FlashChat!
Post by: enwiabe on December 10, 2007, 02:37:53 am
You may have noticed an extra button up top. 'Chat' - Tufat FlashChat is our client of choice, now, you don't have to login or worry about people stealing your usernames, it's fully integrated with SMF so you keep all of your SMF details for it. Enjoy!

Does this mean we're dumping the IRC channel?

Well, it'll no longer be FSN-endorsed, no. But feel free to use IRC all you want. :P

Someone should look for, or create, a Flash applet that connects to IRC, so that FlashChat users and IRC users don't need to be separated.

I personally like IRC more, I'll be using it still :P

FlashChat and IRC would still be separated. FlashChat stores all its messages in the database, whereas IRC uses an IRC server. Connecting FlashChat to IRC would involve having an IRC bot relay messages in the IRC to the database and vice versa (relay messages in the FlashChat to the IRC), which would take a while to code up :P
Perhaps I'll try something one day... :P

It's well known; it's been around for ages (since 1993) and you can use your own client. If you're on a computer that doesn't have Flash installed, you can still use IRC.
It's faster than most things I've seen... Compare a IRC room with 150 people to a MSN chat with even only 15 people, and the IRC will still lag less. Do not try a MSN conversation with over 25 people, from past experience it doesn't go too well (and I don't think FlashChat would handle above 100 people that well either) :P.
And since the protocol is "open", people are able to write bots and stuff for it :)

But I guess it's a personal thing, some people prefer FlashChat. :P

I like flashchat cause it looks nice :)
Also it is convinient cause it is intergrated on the site. Don't have to open up a seperate program or client or whatever

I think enwiabe likes it because FlashChat has the usernames on FSN integrated into the FlashChat. This means he can set things like: moderators are automatically moderators on FlashChat, and same for Admins. You should see when he joins the IRC channel and someone's set everyone as operators (IRC moderators), he freaks ;)

Yeah, I know, spelling isn't too important :P
And it looks like the "Spell Check" button doesn't work on this server :(

Too true! It's not like we would do anything just because he's power-hungry, enjoys randomly kicking us out of the channel for fun, abusing us every third line and repeatedly calling all the girls whores. :D
