FUCK YES!!!
SUCK ON THAT ADELAIDE!
-
FUKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE SAY WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE
-
Now we just got to win finals to be called the actual champions.
-
yeah hopefully if we get the final they move it to the MCG, last time they sold out for the dome in less than an hour
-
There's no such thing as the 'actual champions'.
We are the 'Premiers'
the "champion" team is what is determined through the playoffs.
Just like winning the EPL , end of season team on top = Melbourne. Thus we are the Premiers and win the Premiers plate or whatever its called.
Plus we get automatic qualification into the Asian Champions League :)

No, not really... :)

The top four was pretty tight this year:
P W D L F A GD Pts
1 Melbourne Victory FC 21 12 2 7 39 27 12 38
2 Adelaide United FC 21 11 5 5 31 19 12 38
3 Queensland Roar FC 21 10 6 5 36 25 11 36
4 Central Coast Mariners FC 21 7 7 7 35 32 3 28
where is sydney? ;)
-
A league sucks..........
jks
(waiting to be destroyed by costargh)
-
Good to see the victory on top, it looked like nothing separated them and Adelaide United though.
-
anyone know if we got the semi-final leg at home first or away?
-
tomoz we find out I believe
-
midas: Victory are on top cos even though the goal diff is the same for both teams, we scored more goals (39 to 31) than them. I think that's what they go to after goal difference, anyway.
-
Thats correct
-
Just found out we got the away leg first in 2 weeks time, home leg is on Saturday the 14th of Feb

it does suck, end of story. EPL ftw. however, i do support victory based solely on the fact that i live in Victoria and melbourne victory represents me.

Being 'premiers' won't mean much if Melbourne don't win the final IMO.

But being premiers qualifies us automatically for the Asian Champions League

I realise that - and it's a good achievement to finish first. But if Melbourne lose in straight matches in the finals then I don't think finishing first means very much.
Geelong lost 1 match throughout the whole season leading up to the GF yet didn't win the flag, and their season has been considered a failure. Different sports and contexts, but I think the point remains valid. If Adelaide win the final, it's not going to mean much when you say "who cares we were premiers" is it?
I realise theres the ACL, but thats just my opinion. I think celebrations of finishing top are a little premature is all.
-
There's a difference. You cant compare Football and AFL.
In AFL you win the "MINOR" premiership if you finish on top of the ladder and the PREMIERSHIP if you win the play-offs.
In Football (A-league), you win the PREMIERSHIP if you finish on top of the ladder and the CHAMPIONSHIP if you win the playoffs.
I invite you to name me one top level football league in the world where finishing on top of the regular season ladder isn't the greatest achievement you can receive.
I know structurally things are differnt in Australia but historically, finishing on top of the ladder has always been the greatest achievement a team could make.
I think in the A-league the championship is deemed more glorious BUT there's nothing minor about the premiership.
-
I realise soccer is different to football.
You're right, finishing top of the table is the greatest achievement for almost all soccer leagues around the world. However, the fact that they have no finals series, while the A-League does, is a big factor.
Of course if you have no finals then finishing on top is the highest achievement possible. But here in Australia the A-League adopted a finals series(probably because Australians are "used" to finals in AFL, NRL etc). Therefore, winning the GF is in my opinion almost the only thing that matters if you want to be known as the best.
I think in the A-league the championship is deemed more glorious BUT there's nothing minor about the premiership.
This is what I don't understand/agree with. Coming from a football background where winning the GF is everything, it's all or nothing IMO.
-
I say we get rid of the whole concept of finals for a-league next season, the season will be extended with North Queensland and Gold Coast coming in as new teams anyway
-
Well done to MV.
The A-League is pathetic . Maybe in another 55-60 years it will reach the standards of European football, but by then European football will improve , so the A-league will keep trying and trying, hence getting nowhere xD.
Also, the Asian Champions League is of very low standard, doesn't really mean much. UEFA Champions League is the real competition ;).

You cant compare the a-league with any leagues in Europe. A-leagues is only 4 seasons old and bound by salary caps, it doesn't have the finances and resources and it never will challenge the European leagues

Fuck the finals. Absolute waste of time if you ask me.
A cup play off would be much better. It allows smaller and traditional teams to have a chance at "playing with the best."
A-league gets so much attention and yet traditional clubs like Melbourne Croatia, South Melbourne, Preston Makedonia etc are ridiculed and critisized as being racist clubs etc.
The Football Federations at both state and Federal level need to wake up realise that if it wasn't for these clubs, the sport would not exist in this country.
We have alot to thank traditional clubs for!
BTW i am not a fan of any of the above clubs. I am a Melbourne Victory fan that is upset with the treatment of traditional clubs.

Totally agree with you. VPL teams have contributed so much yet they are forced to comprise so much to comply with the crap policies of FFA and FFV. Melbourne Croatia was forced to change its name to "Knights", bringing any non-Australian flags to foxtel cup games is also frowned upon by officials

and in the case of knights, you are not allowed to bring any flags or banners.
Add that to the rubbish that is being dished out from above saying that football is a family sport and "ethnics" are ruining it for the game.
IMO the game should be run by people in this country that have been fans for their whole life.
People like Tony Ising the founder of Melbourne Victory.
I whole heartedly believe that geoff lord has turned the whole operation of the club into a money hungry gimmick.
Then there are other owners like Con Constantine (owner of newcastle jets) who take it to the next level actually telling fans that they are pieces of shit and that if they don't like his rules they can get fucked.
-
1. Flags that have nothing to do with the club SHOULDNT be at game days ie. National flags at domestic league games whereby the flags only serve to incite ethnic tension.
2. Ethnics arent ruining the game because the FFA already got rid of the NSL.
3. I'd much rather have the system we have in place now where we have a RELATIVLELY strong domestic league thats run professionaly than the farce that was the NSL where it wasn't South Melbourne Vs Melbourne Knights; it was Greece Vs Croatia.
4. Goeff Lord has invested millions into the club. It's fair to say he'd want a return on investment. Wouldn't you?
5. Fans who ruin the game day experience for others with violent and inappropriate behavour ARE pieces of shit and ARENT true supporters and should get fucked.

I see the point your making but flags are an important part of the clubs heritage. As for the violence, your right it comes from idiots who arent true fans, though this idiotic behavior is only carried out by a minority. I just hate the way former NSL clubs such are treated after all they've done for the game in this country. Where would players like Viduka, Culina, Bresciano, etc. be if these clubs didn't exist?
-
But a clubs heritage (ie. the general composition of its senior squad and fan base) shouldn't be the the face of any club. It serves to allienate the majority of potential new fans and thats one of the reasons why the A-league is doing so much better in terms of spectator interest than the NSL. Basically if you weren't of one of the heritages of the NSL clubs you basically didn't have a club to follow. It's not good for the game.

so melbourne victory sign two costa ricans. Carlos Hernandez and Jose Lopez. I want to bring my costa rican flag to show them that we are welcoming them. I am CLEARLY inciting ethnic tension.
-the ethnic comment above was referring to the media, police's and FFA's reactions towards football fans, and the way they support.
-Your memory must be extremely short, some of the best quality of football this country has ever seen was in the NSL. Of course you and those around would be unaware of that. Old soccer is bad. All that ever happened in the NSL was riots. They could never finish a game.
Please do not forget that superstars of this country like Culina and Viduka started playing in the NSL. Its a shame that you don't realise that this "farce" ran for 30 years. Doing extremely well for a league that wasn't run professionally.
-You mention Geoff Lord investing millions to the club. Geoff Lord would have never watched a game of soccer in his life. He grew up livng and breathing AFL. How can someone that has no idea of the culture behind the sport get involved the way he has?
-Now my favourite bit
I am one of these pieces of shit you mention above. I love this city and my team to death. I spend a substancial part of my life around football and my mates ive met through the football and the "terraces" supporting this team. When an opposition fan gives it to me, I give it back. I will not take their shit.
In this sport passion runs deep through the veins. In AFL its ok to be friends with the "enemy." Carlton and Collingwood fans go together to games to watch their teams. They give each other hi 5's when each team scores. Fuck that, thats not passion. That's not staying true to your club.
I do not understand the culture of it. AFL cheersquads sing songs about hating the enemy yet when one enters their area they let them sit down and even invite them for a drink post game.
if thats how you want to support, go ahead support. But remember when your on your arse one day, remember its the pieces of shit that will probably have your back
-
"I invite you to name me one top level football league in the world where finishing on top of the regular season ladder isn't the greatest achievement you can receive."
I think in Brazil [and possibly elsewhere in South America] the league and knockout competition are connected, as with A-League and AFL.
-
The players in the NSL have nothing to do with the way that the league was run. Why do you think that the NSL is now defunct? Because it was run well?
Passion and violence don't have to be linked. It's a fucken sport for christ sake. People like you don't deserve to be a fan of Melbourne Victory or Australian football as a whole. You are the type of people who are dragging football down in this country.
I'm all for having people with a wealth of football knowledge and experience running football in this country and supporting it.
But condoning 'giving it back' to opponents just shows you're MORE INTERESTED IN YOUR OWN INTERESTS THAN YOUR CLUBS!
If you give a shit about football as a whole you will go and watch a fucken game of football. Not go to rip flares and be a sikkent and throw chairs at Adelaide United fans.
If you go and are a part of those sorts of things your obviously far more interested in your own agenda and objectives you wish to achieve at a football match than the objects of the club that you believe you so desperately care about.
-

But sometimes clubs are formed by people who themselves have been alienated by the majority. Take for example Celtic F.C in Scotland, it was formed in the 1800's by Irish Catholic immigrants who at the time were treated like second-class citizens in Britain. The club to to this day is closely linked with its Irish roots yet it has one of the biggest fan bases in the world consisting of fans (one which is myself) from various races not just Irish backgrounds
-
Yeh and what's the end result or this formation? One of the most violent and disgusting core fan bases in the world.
-

yet one of the best.
Football and violence go hand in hand. Football history shows that it was a game played and supportered by the lower to middle class. these are what lower to middle class people do.
Get over it costargh. No matter where you go in the world sport will have violence.

I'm surprised that the stadium can withhold all that jumping as well. Do you know the name(s) of the stadiums?

Have you ever met a Celtic fan or a member of the "Tartan Army"? In the 2003 UEFA Cup final over 80,000 Celtic fans traveled to Seville, even though Celtic lost not one of their fans stirred trouble nor were any arrested. I am not denying that there aren't violent elements within the club, but thats why Celtic is one of the leading clubs in Britain and in the world with its programs such as "Bhoys Against Bigotry" which downplay the element of sectarianism.

Lol, show me something that gives the Fenerbahçe decibel meter a challenge mate.
The only good fan group(s) in the Balkans is Delije (Partizan) & also Gate 13 (Panathinaikos (Greece)). Also, Italy lost its vocal potential due to industrialising football.
Say NO to industrialised football, it just ruins the whole purpose of football!. The passion & love of fans (vocally) is what gives the team morale. Vocal fans are considered to be the "12th player" in Turkey.

Balkan is an old Turkish word meaning "a chain of wooded mountains".
Those videos are terrible btw, 1 with pictures no real motion going on and the other is just some bad quality cheering.
You want an away game huh ? :)

That is total BS mate IMO. Oh and first of all, "delije" is the group of Red Star not Partizan. Needless to say, both "delije' and "grobari (partizan)" are made up of war criminals who were never brought to justice, who joined Serbian paramilitaries and helped purportate some of the worst attorcities in Europe since WWII, notably being the Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia.

Im not having a go at Serbia mate, Ive got relatives who have partial Serb ancestry. Im just pointing out the fact that clubs such as Partizan openly encouraged their fans to take up arms and occupy a foreign nation. Like wtf? What kind of a club would do that?

Lol. Why do you guys fight about Serbia-Croatia?. You were all once called Yugoslavia.
Croatia, Serbia and all other southern Slavic nations have existed since about 800AD. No Croats, Slovenes or Bosnians wanted a Yugoslavia, it was forced upon us by Western powers in an attempt to assimilate us all into a single ethnic group
