Probably not, nonetheless it'd probably be a waste of time at Uni.
You'd be better off financially and from the point of view at going at your own pace by getting lessons and studying music books.

yer i fail at everything related to music so i'd probs end up wasting money and the tutors time. ehhh there goes my music dreams.
-
I remember reading somewhere you need a grade 7 or something AMEB grade, I don't think Unis can be stuffed teaching from scratch.
-
Well, if you like music then go for it, you never know hard :P you might start to really get into it

Not really but most pianist know each other from competitions and can tell who is better etc.
I've seen ninwa play so much live, I can easily say she is the most talented pianist I've ever seen :)

No, but there's a group of pianists who are generally regarded (internationally) as the best. Most of them would have won respected international competitions.
Middle C is near where the keyhole is on the piano :P

You guys are both amazing!
I've been playing piano for about a year now and can honestly say it's the most frustrating/fulfilling Instrument I've ever played.
Side note: There's supposed to be a correlation between ability in mathematics and playing piano :)

that makes sense, I fail at both

lol, all of the best pianists I know suck hard at maths.
The "best" of them all got 50 in Literature and 49 in English though. :p
-
On another side-note, did anybody read Maestro as part of their year 12 English text?
I really liked that book.

So true, TBH I don't like any other instruments besides piano. Nothing even comes close IMO, piano just sounds so elegant.

yes, you could (at the university of melbourne)

I enjoy acoustic guitar as well, maybe because I've been playing it for longer. I do admit piano sounds heaps more elegant.

Question: if you have some experience with piano, but little, what breadth subjects can you do in music at UoM?
i looked through the list and they are all in a performance group needing level 7++
-
I think the piano is one of the more abstract instruments, which makes piano music more profound, but also harder to relate to. When I listen to impressionist piano music in particular, it is like being drawn into the transcendental world of my thoughts. It allows me to enter a deeply contemplative state, which is simultaneously unsettling and breathtaking.

I have synesthesia (in relation to music notes), so listening to music for me is literally like a swirl of rainbow colours in my mind :)
(though it only really works with classical music)

You could do a concurrent diploma in music?
Applications for entry into the Diploma should be made directly to the Faculty of Music upon acceptance into their main degree program. Admission is by audition, and applicants are asked to prepare a 15-minute program of 2-3 contrasting works chosen from the classical repertoire (not contemporary popular or jazz). A sample program might include works from the Baroque, Romantic and Twentieth Century repertoires. Applicants may also be asked to demonstrate some technical work. The audition panel will not hear all of the program and will make its own selection from the works prepared. Auditions are usually held in early February each year.

^ I wish I could do that :(

Wow thanks ninwa! This sounds amazing. I'd actually love to do this, except the audition part is a little scary.
hmm, i wonder how the grading works, considering it could be hard to do very well in these music subjects (i'll just try hard at my other subjects to raise my GPA then .___.)
i just looked around the page, and called up about how good you need to be to get in.
and yeah she said you need to be quite good, around level 5/6 with a very good ability to read music.
:P i have a year to practice! aha
this would actually be sooo fun.

I wonder if they'd take Monash students... cos if they do, I'd consider doing it too...
I know people doing music at Monash, and apparently it's quite easy to get HDs in the performance exams. But then again that's Monash, which (no offence) is quite inferior to UoM music :P

haha, i wouldn't know which is more inferior or not. but i would imagine music is moreso because is part of the VCA?
i may have to dream about it because i probably wont get in. unless i spend this year perfectly three classical pieces *thinks*
im so gonna try ha.
