Title: when is it too late?
Post by: hard on January 17, 2009, 01:32:25 pm
amm does anyone if there is a last date for students in year 12 to change a subject? The reason i'm asking is because i called my teacher today, and he was a bit worried and he was like
I'll try get you in bio before it's too late.

what does he mean by too late?

Too late as in if your subjects clash with Biology, or if there is only one class running and it is already in maximum capacity.

That or something else, maybe your school is tight and you have to do Units 1 &2 Bio before 3/4, like MHS and Macrob??

Too late as in:
- classes might have been filled
- timetables might have been created for the subject already; might lead to other subject timetable changes
- clash of subjects if you were to pick it up
There are a lot of possibilities/issues the school has to think about. Sounds easy to pick a subject up, but really, it's not.

Good luck though

dude dont stress. in year 12 i did a term and a half of methods before swapping into further. so unless your school has some psycho policy of not allowing such changes or the class is full, i dont see why you cant swap classes. biol would be difficult to pick up imo, unless you were willing to go over the unit 1/2 stuff to get a rough idea of concepts and stuff.

hehe i know im right because i did it myself. =P just contact the school closer to when its about to start. i tried to do that, but the teachers were all like nah just wait it out and see how you go. but i hated it. couldnt stand the teacher enough to bother with trying to understand the course content. (which is pretty much what happened with my chem ss bahahaha.) anyway, a term and a half in i went the the vce coordinator and said enough is enough. he asked for a note from my mum, and i was out of that class straight away.

Why are you changing to BIO, you need chem for Med and Eng and other courses.

hard: if its a prerequesite for your desired course it would be most unwise to drop chem. unless you plan on getting in post grad or something.

Last date to change subject is about the first week of Term 2

Tried to change a subject in the second week or so of Term 2 but was too late

nah there's only a few courses that require chem, to which i'm interested in. Most don't.

thats good hard. do whatever works for you. dont change your mind just because other people tell you to. just make sure that there is not a possibility that you may change your mind at a later date. i tapered all of my subjects to the prereqs and middle bands of the courses i was interested in. which was both good and bad i guess.

i heard according to my teacher it is the first 6 weeks of term 1 u can switch your subjects but afterwards they(meaning VCAA) wont allow it. Im not sure my teacher is right but im guessing anytime before term 2 starts.

I know someone who dropped Accounting AFTER the Mid year and picked up another sub.

No fcking idea how that worked. They definitely dropped Accounting... but hmmmm maybe they didn't pick another sub up.

mmm ii sent this email:

hi Mr.x it's admon,

Just writing in regards to my subjects am i've decided that i'm dropping chemistry and picking up biology. I've already started the first two chapters of bio and i think i'll personally do better at bio than at chem since it's more rote-learning. Sadly i got rejected from UMEP due to poor physics results haha but i find spec meth eng and bio will suit me much better than doing chem. Can you check that the timetable doesn't clash and all? When is school resuming for teachers?

cheers.

then he sent:

Hi Admon,

I'm going into school on the 27th and will check for you, should be OK.

My only concern is that chemistry is a pre req for many courses, it is more sought after than physics, spec maths or biology. Have you checked that out?
