Title: enrol
Post by: fredrick on January 20, 2009, 01:16:59 pm
Got the enrolment letter from monash saying there is a pre-enrolment session thursday 23 january 2009.(i think they mean 22nd jan??)

i activated my authcate account, completed questionnaire, hecs help n all that but when i came to select the units i doesnt allow me to. It is just a read-only option? Question is: do i manually apply for the units and get my timetable at pre-enrolment day?

thanks

I've just done all the same, and I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that you can add units and all that after enrollment day.

EDIT: Did you get a Novell error or something when you registered your authcate account (something about being unable to change a password)? I did! my account logs in fine though :S

I enrolled yesterday at noon and gave it 24 hours as the site says, but still nothing... I even called up and they said it should work after 2pm but no lock there. I'm keen to sort out my timetable preferences...

I've also had my authcate for about a year now but I don't think it matters..

i read somewhere that the faculty enrols you in the units for jaffies, after that you do it yourself

 Highest Educational Qualification

8. Prior to commencing your current course, what was your highest educational qualification and final year of enrolment?

I am picking this one

Completed final year of secondary education at school or an Australian TAFE  and 2008.

Am I doing something wrong?

For those who had the "Read Only Error"

Here is why... I rang and asked.

They were able to fix mine over the phone but you will not be able to get your trans number until your course is open. You will still be able to do your other forms just not the units. The dates are here>

http://www.adm.monash.edu.au/enrolments/new-enrolments/wes-dates.html

I was trying on the Tuesday, but mine didnt open officially until today. Tried again first thing this morning and worked fine :)

Give your facaulty a call, they fix it over the phone :)

Some of you have said you've enrolled in units already
Mine, however says

"Faculty to Enrol VTAC students -

As a new to course student entering the University from the VTAC system you are not able to enter your initial units via WES. The Faculty will enrol your commencing units for you. You will then have access to change or add your units."

Is this because of the course I'm doing? Or some other reason...
Enrolling is confusing. haha

Don't worry that the classes are gonna fill up if you dont enrol ur subs and allocate them early. The system isn't first in best dressed. It allocates automatically acccording to preferences, not who enrolled first. So in that respect dont stress out too much if you can't enroll ur subs yet.

Yeh but i just want to know WHY it's saying that, especially if others have been able to pick their subjects.

i'm just wondering, because i understand that students that have electives to pick, want to enrol their units as soon as possible. i've got pharmacy at monash and by the looks of it, i've got set units. four per semester. don't know if i should be enrolling now or not. also, my info session is on the same day as enrolment... so should i wait until the day to do it, or should i just click 'enrol enrol enrol' for the units listed there?

thanks for the help and oh, hope you guys all got what you wanted  :)

I think that is the what you should aim for but as is the nature of your course this may not always be possible. Say for example, most of my lectures start at 2pm so I don't want to start a tute at 4pm.

Even the next morning would be good I think. You can go home and study and whatnot.
Title: Re: enrol
Post by: shonakennedy on January 24, 2009, 01:00:35 am
sweet thanks. how about this.... is it better to squash as many classes as possible into one day... or spread them out over say 4 days?
Title: Re: enrol
Post by: costargh on January 24, 2009, 01:01:58 am
How many contact hours do you have. That will determine what sorta spread you should have. I have 12 contact hours so I am doing it over 3 days although I could have done it over to (including one night where a lecture started at 6pm!)
Title: Re: enrol
Post by: shonakennedy on January 24, 2009, 01:16:13 am
i have 16 contact hours. 9 of which are auto allocated across 4 days. :S what should i do?
Title: Re: enrol
Post by: costargh on January 24, 2009, 01:25:02 am
If you have to go four days anyway and you're one of the people like me who doesnt see the point in going in to uni for 2 hours and leaving, then I'd try have a nice even spread across the 4 days.
However if you have a part time job and want to have better availability for work then you may want to load up on 2-3 of the days and just have the auto allocated units on 1-2 of the days so you can go to work/do other things that don't involve University.

From the perspective of what's probably best for your education I'd say try have a nice even spread so you can take in whats said in lectures etc. Also, depending on how good you are at studying (edit: this is meant to mean, how good you are at studying without getting distracted at home by other things) you might want to consider having some 1 hour breaks each day to study in the library. (I've heard many Uni students say that that's where they get most of their work done. Depends on the individual though obviously.)

Also, I've been advised to try put allocate in some breaks for lunch etc.

Title: Re: enrol
Post by: TrueLight on January 24, 2009, 01:29:26 am
ah yeah its always best to have breaks in between lectures , although this yr its all auto allocated, so really no choice there... and i always have my labs/tutes well i like to have them at 2pm cause if im lazy and tired i can sleep in...mmm sleep lol

how do u find out how many lectures/tutes you need to go to? for example, one of my courses says i should have atleast 3 contact hours...does that cover lectures and tutes or just one of them?
Title: Re: enrol
Post by: costargh on January 24, 2009, 01:48:18 am
Contact hours refers to all types of classes; tutorials, lectures, labs (for sciencey stuff etc)

Sometimes on subject pages (like on some Monash ones) it just says '3 contact hours'. If you enroll in it it will specify what it is composed of. Alternatively just shoot off an email asking about what the composition of contact hours are.

Generally though, it will be 2 hours of lectures (either a 2 hour lecture, or two 1 hour lectures) and a one hour tute.
However that's not always the case. My core management subject is a 90 minute tute and a 90 minute lecture.

I dont think he means the timetable itself, but after you enroll in your subs it emails you a transation with a grid of your subjects. My first time the table was blank. I submitted again and then they sent me another email with my subjects in that grid.

My first year for example:

Core units:
ENG1020 Engineering structures
ENG1030 Electrical systems
ENG1040 Engineering dynamics
ENG1050 Engineering materials
ENG1060 Computing for engineers
ENG1091 Mathematics for engineering

Foundation units:
ENG1070 Foundation chemistry (i pick this one i guess, done physics and spec in yr 12)
ENG1080 Foundation physics
ENG1090 Foundation mathematics

Elective units:
ENG1010 Process systems analysis
ENG1061 Engineering profession
ENG1071 Chemistry for engineering
ENG1081 Physics for engineering

So i put ENG1070 in first semester right? Also im to pick one elective which goes in semester 2 right? WHat about the core units, which ones go in which semester?

You would have known from 2007's lot of BSc'ers that you were walking into that, don't complain.
I uploaded both my first year timetables. 23 and 21.5 contact hours. 2nd semester I had 2 8am and 2 9am starts and I considered it a good timetable.

Title: Re: enrol

Oh No gemma. They are never full! Some of my classes are 200% "full". It just means that more people have applied to have that class than possible.

It means some people will miss out on that class. I would try fit that wednesday class in somewhere else, even if the other options appear to be above capacity (like saying 120% or whatever), as long as it doesnt clash.

You're right though, as soon as I posted that I realised there's no way I'm going to be bothered going to uni for one hour. And thus changed it to 10am on Thursday :D

Lol I meant the DAYS were full already... full of lectures and tutes. Haha :P
You're right though, as soon as I posted that I realised there's no way I'm going to be bothered going to uni for one hour. And thus changed it to 10am on Thursday :D
Oh hahah sorry misunderstood you. Yeh and especially because its a tute and as far as I know if you miss a certain number of tutes u fail or something (or a part of your marks is removed or somethign like that) you dont want to be having those "oh cbf going for 1 hour moments :P

edit: also I was looking at MUTTS semester two, and I have a lecture that clashes with another lecture. Is this unavoidable or can it be changed?
Are they the only available lectures for each. You should be able to check via allocate+. For semester 2 units on the left side bar thingo where you usually click on sem1 subjects to allocate, instead click on the respective lectures for the semester 2 units in question. If they are auto allocated then it may mean there are no other possible options and that they will clash.

Yep only options for the lecture; 2 hour lecture for one subject at 11am Monday, 1 hour lecture for another subject at 12pm.

Do you HAVE to do both units in the same semester? Maybe you can switch it with one this semester. Or switch one for one in your 2nd year, semester 1.

:P Thanks. Yeh its nice!!! Hopefully allocate+ doesn't screw me over. All my classes aren't anywhere near capacity so I don't see how they could screw me over.
OMG u can sleep till late ! :o

There is only one possible choice for this group and it is automatically displayed only below, but this does not mean you are allocated!
If you have been successfully allocated to this activity it will appear under 'Your Current Allocations Screen'

Can someone explain?
I understand that it's autoallocated. But then it says im..not allocated..so..how do I allocate myself? Ive checked and I cant seem to find a mention anywhere that ive been allocated into the 'autoallocated' nor is there an option to do it..

Grrr

if a lecture clashes and its automatically allocated...u'll have to choose which one to go to and then if u can listen to the other on mulo. .... ah it writes that your autoallocated so im guessing u r .. if it doesnt display yet just wait closer to the start of uni time...

I had 2 lots of lecture clashes in semester 1, and one in semester 2.
It's really not that bad. If you feel you really can't cope with missing a lecture then choose a different unit

If you can't find an option then there is a good chance such an option doesnt exist, and just leave it. Especially don't stress if this is for a lecture

This is probably a stupid question but when's the 'census date'? Does it refer to enrolment day or some other day?

No such thing as a stupid question.

Census date refers to when your unit selection is completely finalised and if you want to change anything it shows up on your academic record and/or you need pay fees.
For semester 1, you can add or remove units freely as much as you want until March 13. You can remove units freely (but not add any new ones) until march 31. March 31 is the census date

I have found these from http://www.adm.monash.edu.au/execserv/about/principal-dates/2009/09-prd.html and also it shows up in your my.monash portal main page somewhere under 'important dates' I think
