Hey guys,
My teachers all have slightly varying opinions of this, so I'm not quite sure on what is correct. Hoping someone can help me out.
Do you ranking in your class have that much effect on your study score for a subject? Like for example if you were ranked first in your class with an average SAC mark of 80% (in a shit class), would you get a higher study score than someone ranked 15th in another class with an average SAC mark of 90% (obviously a smart class)? Also another thing that confuses me is that I've heard people complain about the rest of their class getting shit scores which lets them down, but wouldn't that only help them get a better ranking, which leads to a better study score?
Hopefully someone can give me a bit of clarity on this.

From what I've picked up over the years.
For the first part. It is your school ranking that determines how your SAC scores are moderated. So that someone with an average SAC mark of 90% may be ranked 15th in their class but they are ranked higher than you in your school. This of course just affects one of the three GAs that contribute to your study score, so in any case you cannot say that you would get a higher study score than someone else based on SAC marks.
For the second part. You are right, if you get 90% and the rest of the class get 2% for SACs, then all it is doing is increasing the gap between you and the rest of the class and increasing the likelihood (almost ensuring in this hypothetical case) that you get 100% after moderation of SAC scores. What people may feel let down about are things like the GAT, which although many people underestimate has an impact on your school's moderation (according to my teachers anyway).

I would say that it has an effect on your study score. I got a higher English exam score than some others at my school, but they got higher study scores than me because they were ranked higher. SAC percentages don't really mean much. The standard varies from school to school, so it isn't really much of an indicator. What matters is your cohort's exam performance. Yes, shit exam performance will let you down, unless you're ranked first within your cohort (if you come from a weak school). Obviously if you have a strong cohort, the bulk of the students will perform well in exams, so your SACs won't be moderated down as much, if at all (it might even go higher). Unfortunately, the only SAC marks that weren't moderated down for me came from the subject I finished first in.

I would like to know how you guys knew about your "State Rank"? Did you ask teachers? Did you know after exams or during SAC's? I'm currently doing Further Maths and have acheived a 89% in the first SAC. Is this ok? I have 3 more SAC's so what would be an average (/300) score that I should get to possibly get 45+? I really would like a reply asap

P.S Planning to do the matrices and graphs/relation modules as I find them the easiest (do you get more points for doing harder modules?)

You just replied to a post from 2009 by the way. The original people in this thread have probably died from old age, lol.
To answer your question - 'state rank' is a New South Wales thing. Nothing to do with VCE... but as for getting 45+ in Further, keep doing well in your SACs, then aim for 39/40 (or 40/40) on Exam 1, and 55+/60 on Exam 2 :)

Nope. There's no scaling for module difficulty. They're considered to be similar in difficulty.
