Title: Chemistry unit 1
Post by: Hielly on February 20, 2009, 06:21:10 pm
Hey guys,
i was wondering how good you chemistry unit 1 guys or past students have done?.. Because for the first chapter i didn't get a good result for my test (i got over 50% though) :S:S.. also if you have any tips on how to study please tell me :).

When i received my test result i was really surprised because i did study for it, and i was aiming 80- 90's... Now i'm thinking of moving to physics class.. but i dont want to give up on chemistry because of that one test..

appreciate any advice.

One advice. Don't give up.

If I remember right, the first chapter would either cover history. If it's history, then getting 50% is totally fine, since you don't need to know it for Unit 3/4 (or Unit 2 for that matter).

Nah, you dont need to know the history and trends of the periodic table for Units 3 and 4. That chapter involves a lot of memorising, so dont be too hard on yourself :)

Keep at it!! Chemistry is a pre-requisite for most of the health sciences courses at Uni, so I think it would be wise to keep your options open.

The only real thing you need to glean from Year 11 chemistry is stoichiometry, maybe redox.  I remember I got ~75% on my Year 11 Chem exam, and ended up getting an SS of 49 for chem.  I started year 12 chem knowing just about nothing (no redox, no organic compounds stuff, no green chemistry) except stoich.

So definitely continue with chem!  I think it's a rather rewarding subject :)

Trends of the periodic table is not essential, but helpful to know for unit 3/4, it can be quite a useful tool comes to trying to understand things.

ehh chemistry is so gay. I like did ok in year 11 and now i lost all interest in it in yr 12. But keep at it as everyone said, i'm sure you'll like it. It's just the difference between getting a 25 and a 35 for me in chem is negligible since it's going to be my 6th sub anyway.

Lol, just sleep on that section tbh... nothing of value is lost by the non-retention of that information.

In past eras, that history section was part of Unit 4 (i.e. quite assessable)
