I managed to get a 66/72 for Chemistry
MC
-1 on Q8 (Ibuprofen)
-1 on Q18 (IR Question)
SA
-1 on 3)a.
-1 on 5)a. (ii)
-1 on 7)b.
-1 on 7)c.
The dodgy redox question caught me out, but i seriously was 100% sure I balanced it correctly, I think there must have been a misunderstanding about where the numbers went.
If I decide to view my script again, and can somewhat prove that I balanced it correctly, is it possible for me to gain marks there?
Don't know how the hell I got 3)a. wrong!! D:
7)b. and c. were probably the result of some dodgy explanations.
Overall, I think I did well, but VERY VERY annoyed about the short answer, especially since I could have got them all right!!
The two MC questions I'll swallow because I truly did not know the answer!
So, how'd everyone else go?

Hiya
When did you send for it? I just mailed the request yesterday with money order (primitive I know). Any chance of receiving it next week?
-
wow thats great. so after you send in your form, how and where do you gte it?
-
Just received mine today and I got 65/72. I dropped 5 marks in the multiple choice which is very frustrating, short answer was pretty good though :)
-
wow thats great. so after you send in your form, how and where do you gte it?
It gets mailed to you, it should arrive in about a week or so, but if you order it after the results come out, ie. after monday, it can take quite a while, one of my friends says around 2 weeks for him (last year)
Hiya

you probably won't, it'll probably be around two weeks, and oh money order? dont they cost $6, thats like almost the price of the statement itself! :P

Hi! I got 67/72
Does anybody know what sort of study score that translates to, assuming I get approximately the same score for end of years and sacs?
Congrats to Hamdog & paulsterio :)
-
you're looking at at around 43+ there easily. I would say 45+ but i dont know how well other people have gone.
-
That would be 45+ with good sacs this year for sure.
-
I'd be weary about calling it a 45+ at this stage. Got good marks (72/75) last year for exam 1 (though the cutoff was higher) and performed worse on the second exam (still A+) and definitely didn't hit that :P
Still another exam to go, so yes you CAN get 45+ definitely but yeah, wouldn't be calling anything definite now because you would probably have to perform a bit better than this sem.
-
Taiga I read in one of the topics you got a C+ but a derived score? Correct me if I'm wrong?
-

Congrats to Hamdog & paulsterio :)
well "approximately the same score" is a very vague way of saying it
because if the end of year exam was harder than this one, it would mean something different to if the end of year exam was easier! :P
if you were trying to say "approximately the same ranking" that could be a 45+ (which is a 48 scaled mind you :P) but i'd be on the safe side and say expect a 42+
but its good to be optimistic :)
and thanks for the congrats btw (:
-
What would you classify as a low A+?
-
Low A+ = 61.5-63
Low-Med A+ = 64 - 65
Med A+ = 66
Med-High A+ = 67
High A+ = 68 +
Correct me if Im wrong :)
-
Well, I'd say 61.5-64/72 is 'low', 64.5-68 is 'mid', and 68.5-72 would be 'high'
EDIT: damn you matt :)

i think your high A+ is too high...:D

hang on its only 0.5 off LOL
-
does a statement of marks just get mailed to you? And does it only tell you how many marks you got out of 72 or will it tell me which ones I got wrong as well?
-
Taiga I read in one of the topics you got a C+ but a derived score? Correct me if I'm wrong?
Nah A+'s straight through.
Derived happened in 2009. The only weird story I heard was a 46 with a B+ on a derived exam 1. That's about it though.
-
Wooohoo, I'm classified as high by you all :)
-
Well, there's no definition of a "HIGH" A+ in my opinion :S
like, what's HIGH?
-
One of my friends managed a 67.5.

highest from my school i believe

Mine arrived last week, and I'm quite patient :P
-
Mine still hasn't arrived either >:( impatience increasing exponentially...
well you better change that to a logarithmic increase pretty quickly cause you probably wont get it till 2 more weeks, thats what people say if you ordered it last week (:
-
Friend ordered it on Tuesday, got it on Friday.
-
Friend ordered it on Tuesday, got it on Friday.
As did several people I know. Though, perhaps the waiting time increases exponentially :P (Of course under a set domain xD)
I ordered mine on Friday. Hope to get it soon....

Ordered mine Friday as well, do VCAA work weekends? :P

I ordered mine about a week before results came out! Impatience turning to anger....

Faxed mine Thursday, got it Friday :)

is that a record? :P
-
STILL haven't received it. I asked my mum to check her credit card account and the transaction went through on the 12th, so I'm going to call up VCAA tomorrow if it doesn't come through...
-
Same here. Except I wouldn't call VCAA :P they'd probs say it'll take 2-3 weeks :P
-
mailed on wednesday last week..
havent received yet ::)

call them. if you sent it before results you shuold have definately got it by now.
-
So I emailed vcaa, and they replied that they have no record in their database of my application or the transaction, so I sent them the bank statement with the payment on it and a copy of my application form, so hopefully it should clear up soon. Dealing with vcaa's inadequacies *sigh*...
-
Ouch I feel sorry for you funky, that is a pain and shame!
They should really get up with the times and allow for online transactions...
-
Decently happy with chemistry: 70/72.
Lost Q18 MC (IR qn) and Q7c i got 1/2.

I would be running riot with that!!!!

my statement finally came... I swear I am the luckiest person alive.. got 62/72 giving me an A+ by half a mark..
-
Statement came today as well, 64/72! :)
EDIT: Congrats thushan, don't know why you're aiming for 40-45 :P

man thushan.. you are beast.. congrats :)
and i will send you the answers soon ;)

thanks man!!
-
thanks man!!
Thushan is clearly "the man to beat" at the end of year exams. Though, he will likely make this impossible by getting a 100% for all his subjects. Damn you Thushan! :P Jokes... Congrats man! You clearly deserve it.

hmm, weren't you talking how you think you can beat him in specialist maths? :P
hahah :)
its ok luffy, if we both do really well on the spesh exams it should help us, cause it boosts our sac marks :D

Beating Thushan? Are you crazy? When on earth did I say that? T_T Not only is it not possible - but I probably have a better chance at beating our teachers at the subject than him! :P

LOL! i swear you said that in specialist maths at some point last week :P
bahah a better chance at beating our teachers, lool, that makes me wonder how well our teachers would do if we gave them an exam :D, we should do that :P

why would i lie? :P
but youre right hmm, maybe i did subconciously switch my name in there (A)

if i beat thushan in spech it will be epic.. ::)

meanwhile, thushan aced his 20th spesh practice exam
lol

congrats the king ( THUSHAN ).

Lost Q18 MC (IR qn) and Q7c i got 1/2.
This, only I lost one more mark on MC Q15... *facepalm*
But of course I'm happy with 69

Woo congrats funky! And about time eh?
-
^ yeah, had enough waiting. Thanks!
-
So this is my theory, feel free to debate.
- A+ range is roughly ~10 marks per exam.
- A+ guarantees you ~38+ depending on how high
- There is roughly a 4 mark buffer for 50
Hence, if there are 16 marks from 38-49, then you can allocate roughly 0.5 - 1 marks per SS.
These are by no way VCAA supported facts, but it may help with your predictions?
I reiterate though, this is my theory, feel free to debate.
-
I got bored and calculated Thushan's rank in the midyears. Top 4.5% in Physics and top 3.5% in Chemistry. Obviously this isn't accurate only an estimate, or maybe not even an estimate since my concept could be all wrong LOL! *EDIT: Don't worry these percentages are definetely wrong. No way 3.5% of chem students lost 2 marks!
Anyways that 4 mark buffer for 50 is not really correct. My friend lost more than 4 marks in his midyear for Chemistry and he got 50. For other subjects it is even more strange, like my friend in Methods lost 3 marks in both exams combined and got 48 (her SACs were also super high and since she goes MacRob she has a strong cohort and it would've bumped it up)
Really want to find out more about how VCAA works their statistics. Unfortunately we can't get the standard deviation and mean for the seperate calculation for study score. It seems like the standard deviation is 7 and mean is 30 for all subjects but actually every subject is different. I know that Methods usually has a standard deviation of 29.5 and mean of 7.5 but this changes every year.
-
The number of marks you can lose would be dependent upon the difficulty of the exam
If you lose 3 marks on an exam, and that year you were the highest mark, even though you lost 3 marks, you'll get a 50
If you lose 2 marks, but a lot of people lost only 1 or 2 marks, you might end up with a 48, even though you lost less marks
-
just got mine...got 62.5/72...was expecting 65 so was slightly disappointed :/
Im wondering if i can still get a 45 if i get a high A+ in this next one...

I asked the same question with my 64/72 and a few people had doubts but said that if I only dropped about 1-2marks on the end of year exam I might stand a chance :S
-
61/72
What is the most I can get?
43?
-

43?
Yep, and you'd need a very very high A+ in SACs and exam 2. More likely is 40-42 high mid-high A+s.

Thanks

ahaha u used the z-score? not the best here; scores are not actually normally distributed in reality.

lol i think so, i used normCdf([score],∞,[mean],[standard deviation])x100%. So for Chemistry I plugged into my CAS: normCdf(178,∞,102.3,41)*100%=3.24313%. Any idea how to find out the real statistics though? I've been searching for ages :(
-
real stats? they don't release :(
-
Is it possible to calculate anything if we know that for Chemistry Mid-Years - the mean is 102.3, standard deviation is 41 and our score?
real stats? they don't release :(
So there is no reliable way of estimating one's study score then?
-
Not really; best thing to do is to not worry too much about it and gun unit 4!!!
-
you cant estimate it anyway, because as we all know, the difficulty of the exams vary WILDLY from year to year, so even the Z-Scores won't be of much use (if you're using last years values for example)
-

he would have had to get basically 100% on the end of year exam, and that exam had to be a hard exam :)
-
hmm, i also have a friend in macrob who lost three marks in the second exam for methods (having got 100/100 for SACs and 40/40 for exam 1) - and also got 48. we might be talking about the same person though?
I really don't know what the buffer is for chem; it varies from year to year I daresay, depending on how hard the exam is.
-
did you get 100% for both exams thushan, for methods? :P
-
yup
-
yup
you are god-like :o
-
yup
Just out of curiosity, how many marks (if any) did you drop in your methods SACs? (I'm assuming you were ranked 1 lol)
-
i got 54/55 in one sac, but that was rounded up to 20/20
my schools' sacs are ridiculously easy though
-
68.5/72
What would that translate to for study scores? So far, A+ for SACs.
-
62.5/72.... argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

nice job!

Hey man you did better than like 94% of the state, you did well!
The exam was marked quite harshly - and you can smash unit 4! :D

i got a B+ grade
mother of mercy, why?

yeah - that's if you got 61.5, but you got 62.5, and you'd take a good chunk of the 9% out within the first two marks

im sure luffy would agree here? :P (:

Yeah - I do agree. However, after Thushan's comment, I am beginning to wonder whether all schools follow the same pattern. i.e. Easy Methods SAC's.

you must enrol at DHMC immediately

no schools' SACs are hard enough to challenge the great minds of luffy and thushan

the thing with methods sacs is that i think schools purposely make them easy otherwise too many people would fail
like we cant deny that there are A LOT of people who are doing methods that really shouldn't be
say if my school gave a sac of the difficulty of say 2010's exam 2, im pretty sure that only about 3-4 people in my class would even be able to get a decent (85%+) mark
-
I think my SACs are above VCAA standard, but I'd need other opinions to make sure. Our average SAC scores are usually lower than other schools, however we always do well in exams as a cohort (ie. much better than SACs percentage-wise), therefore I'd assume that our SACs are harder than exams.
-

that's better, because i guess with melbourne high, they can afford to make it harder, because what schools want is to end up with sort of a normal dist. of sac scores, it kinda helps everyone, with melbourne high, you probably have a much stronger cohort than other schools, so your mean would be higher, meaning that they have to make sacs harder to counter that, otherwise everyone would get 100% or close to
but with my school, i dont think our cohort is as strong as MHS's, therefore, if our sacs were as hard as yours, we'd probably have a lot of people getting like 50% whatnot, even though we get good separation at the top...that's why they make it easier, so that everyone kinda "does well" which evens everything out a lot more
if you get what i say, it makes sense in my head :P

My school's methods and spesh sacs are generally harder than vcaa exams; same goes for chem. Some of my spesh sacs have been really difficult, with no one finishing or getting full marks. For one, the highest mark was 17/20, and this is out of a cohort including ~10 45+ scores in methods last year.
-
our sacs are generally very straightforward, although I would say that they are just above VCAA standard (for both methods and spesh). however, my school has a reputation for setting an impossibly hard sac at the most unexpected moments...my last spesh sac was riduclously hard - whereas all the other ones were quite straightforward
-
mmm i would agree, though i think our sacs are at a good standard.
I mean VCAA moderates them quite highly. my sac score was 93 and it went to 100 last year.

our last sac was so easy paul.. maybe its easy for you :P
and yes, thushan should go and own us all at DHMC. If i can some how get 91% on last terms test, Thushan will kill it :P

"our last sac was so easy paul...maybe its easy for you" - what are you trying to say? :P LOL! (: i think you missed out a NOT in there! :P
but nah, most of our sacs are pretty textbook stuff, theres nothing that needs "thinking"
like our spesh app task was actually quite decent, quite challenging :)
-
the spech app task was fairly easy.. although im not going to say it was "really" easy just in case i mucked up a few things. :P
-
To be honest, I'd prefer it if our sacs were much more difficult than they are now. Especially in Chem and Methods.

our methods sacs are a joke, our chem ones are kinda dodgy, like they ask weird as questions, i wonder who writes them...........

it was easy paul.. they took marks off for the slightest errors.. like the last page.. in which I actually went and told the teachers that there was a mistake and get everyone a mark.. only to lose 2 myself..

hahah, well that was smart of you wasn't it? ;P
i thought that "down here it's every man for himself" :P YES I KNOW MY QUOTES ;)
but seriously though, they have to be stingy with the marking, cause with a sac that easy, to do in 2hr 40min...they cant have everyone doing well
btw, do you know who else got full marks, apparently 2 people did?

however, my school has a reputation for setting an impossibly hard sac at the most unexpected moments...my last spesh sac was riduclously hard - whereas all the other ones were quite straightforward
You haven't seen our spesh sacs... They're the combined work of a Russian Physicist and a Pure Maths PhD Actuary. Needless to say the year level average is 50% to 30% for test SACs :(

I'm guessing the actuary is Dr. G? LOL! he's famous even outside MHS, trust me :P

LOL about the impossibly hard spesh sac we just had - our class average was like 12.5/24 => and normally for SACs our average is around 80%...

diverging off the topic, but theres this guy at my school, he's a PhD in mathematics and he sets the most impossibly hard physics sacs, and he's the master of taking marks off
one of his questions (on the sound practical sac) was like what would the sound intensity level in decibels be if we doubled the distance
somehow i managed to read that as half the distance, and i went through and did the correct calculations and even wrote the right formula and i got 0
what an ass =.=

There is great sexual tension between that man and another buffer man.

hahaha, what is with the year 11s and saying that?! if anything its between McDonkey (McConchie) and Cobb
-
No way, Mr McConchie is freaking awesome! Dr Cobb's got nothing on him

Yeh, him and Yarussky think Australia's maths standard is crap, so they make up their own standard. As an example, our next sac will have a part where we need to use hyperbolic trig functions in various DE questions (usually 8-10 mark qs) with no CAS :( And that is just one part :(
It's fun maths though, except when we get our marks back

we have had similar averages for physics and specialist and ive still kept a 90+% average.. hopefully I can kill the exams and get a good study score :) cant say the same for chem... worst sacs EVER, been performing average.. but nailed the exam
