Title: Help with calculating speed of sound!
Post by: Chromeo33 on August 28, 2011, 05:26:20 pm
How would we calculate the speed of sound (v) if we are just given the frequency of the sound (f)? (It's for a prac/SAC so I'm assuming this is the speed of sound in air)

E.g.
Calculate the speed of a sound with a frequency of 100Hz.

Any advice/help would be much appreciated

I'm not sure if you can actually find out velocity knowing only frequency.

You can deduce that period is 0.01 (1/100), but that's about it. Wavelength is proportional to period (1/f), but not equal to it.

Did you have any other information obtained during the prac?

Oh sorry!

The question actually was asking for the WAVELENGTH of the sound wave and NOT THE VELOCITY!
Dang..

So but then we still need to find the velocity if we are to calculate the wavelength! (Since Wavelength = v/f and we don't know velocity!)

Unless we assume velocity to be 340m/s since its in air? Would this be right?

if the question stats that the sound wave is in air then assume v=330m/s or w/e value you use
