Title: BOTA20004 Flora of Victoria. Yea or Nay?
Post by: lexitu on October 22, 2011, 10:47:09 am
This is basically the only Biology subject that I can do in the summer semester. Has anyone done it / had friends that have / have any thoughts on it?

https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2012/BOTA20004

I am waiting to do Research Based Phys and Human Phys later on - will this be so much of a time-saver if done in the same semester that I should just hold up for those?

Let the plant-bashing begin.

LOL Can't imagine a 2 week intensive on plants and having to complete an assignment, prac sheets and study for the final exam within such a short period

I know! Part of it makes me think that it can't be too hard.

I would rather plunge my face into a pool of molten larva than take any subject about Victorian flora.
If I can take EVERY PREREQUISITE for med and my major next semester you can save time with your Phys and not bother with the plants.

Hahaha, as expected. It'd only be a few weeks of suffering though, may be interesting, and I want to try to peg back my degree so I can finish in three years.

But how are you doing Med and your prereqs in one sem? What subjects?

ALL OF DEM jk.

I've done all my breadth except for the one I'm taking overseas, and I need to do the prereqs before I leave.  So if I do major in Phys I will take Biochem, Anat, Human Phys and Research Phys all next semester.  Fun for all.  Then, when o/s, I will probably take genetics, the subject I posted a thread about and some cool looking subject on the chronobiology of sleep if I can get someone to approve it (or boring developmental neurobiology) + whatever breadth I decide on.

The downside is I have to be sure of what I want because I can't do other prereqs for things I would like to do them in, like the Pathology prereqs.

Are you sure doing biochem, anat, and the two phys in one semester is a good idea. Whilst the content in research was easy. The time it took to do all the practicals and the darn assignment was bloody long. Add on top of that now approximately 30 lectures of biochem, anat and phys. Get ready for no life xD

I'm sure it is a completely terrible idea!  I have already dubbed it my death semester.

all those subjects are offered both semesters. What's the rush to do it all at once?

Because I'm (hopefully, most probably, 100% probability provided I'm nominated) going to study at UPenn in semester 2.

Might move one to 2013 considering my lack of breadth requirements but still unsure whether that is even a good idea.

It'd be a killer but all those subjects are awesome. Plus there's summer to prepare for the death semester.

What you said about research Peedles has swung me into not taking it and doing Phys only. If I find out where the hell they put my credit for Human Structure and Function I might be able to skip Biol of the Cell too.

Since we have derailed off-topic,

Has anyone actually done the subject? IMO 2 weeks of misery for 12.5 points and a good mark doesnt sound too awful, regardless of the content really...Im sure mavis disagrees however  :P

Hahaha I just hate Botany, I spent all of today summarising Rick's plant lectures so I am bitter.
If you want to get rid of points then it might not be so bad...I'm in the business of freeing points so I can take moreeee subjects, which is contrary to what most people want.  MY OPINIONS ARE IRRELEVANT.

Rick + Therasa's (that how you spell it?) lectures are mostly rote learned then regurgitated, most of what I read gets lost instantly however which is so frustrating, particularly botany/ zoology phyla. The key I found is consecutive learning (ie everyday) which requires time, 2 week intensive will be better than juggling it around 4 other subjects.

yeh exactly what mike said and besides, as i failed chem in sem 1.. (lol let's not go there)
i feel doing this instead of summer school is a massive win for me, well one month more of break.. no matter how much i hate botany, it will be worth it instead of having to do the full 2 months summer school.. how bad can it be? it's not stuff we've already covered right?
